Moving to subdirectory from subdomain, where subdomain PR is equal to root domain PR
-
Hi all,
I'm currently in the process of revitalizing my company's blog. Currently, the blog sits on a subdomain (blog.rootdomain.com). SEO best practice dictates that I should move this (and 301 redirect the old URLs) to rootdomain.com/blog to concentrate link equity and avoid the risk of having search engines treat the subdomain as separate from the root domain.
However, the PageRank Status extension for Chrome is reporting that the PR for the blog on the subdomain and the root domain are the same. Is there any benefit to migrating the subdomain to a subdirectory? Is that data accurate enough to base decisions off of?

That logic seems incorrect since it doesn't account for root domain links that point to the subdomain. This would only apply if all the inbound links were from other root domains.
For example, my blog on the subdomain has 1.4M inbound links, 1.35M of which come from the root domain. I'm guessing this is because it's a footer link. So, the PR6 of the blog seems largely inherited from the root domain, which has a PR of 6.
Were you just trying to oversimplify it?

I am actually going to recommend you doing that as one of my client is going through the same problem and after a week or two of the instance conversation I convinced him to move from sub domain to a sub directory!
From the SEO point of view there might not be 4 +4 = 8 kind of thing but still at least you will end up having your DA nearer to double.
Just go for it!

I second to Egol's opinion here. Its great to have the sub-domain's PR equal to that of the root domain. You should move the sub-domain to sub-directory to leverage the link popularity of the sub-domain along with all SEO goodies that will further bolster the authority of the root domain. Previously, we faced an issue with sub-domain strategy despite unique content on all those sub-domains. We then moved the content from all the sub-domains to their respective sub-directories, deployed a 301 redirection pointing all the sub-domains' content to their corresponding pages on the sub-directories. The results were amazing. We not only regained the traffic loss but also had an increase in the organic traffic. Since then, I have been a keen advocate of sub-directory/folder structure.
Best of luck to you.

In math class you probably learned that 4 + 4 = 8?
Same principle here.

Domains vs Subdomains for similar brands.
Hi all! I work for a company who have 6 different brands in the same industry targeted at different demographics. Some of them have a lot of history and are well known and respected, others are newer targeted at different price points/ types of people. I've been asked to input on there ongoing web strategy; should they use sub domains or individual branded domains. Previously that had separate brand domains but a new MD wanted to bring everything together into one website. The branded domains were redirected to the new site and it has been going along fine, albeit having lost 1/3rd or so organic traffic. Now a new management team has been brought in and they want to re-structure the website again to put more focus on the brands. Any new website will be on a brand new domain anyway as they are also re branding their main website. What will work better, separate branded domains or sub domains of one website? From what I understand, SEO won't be much different between the two options, but it feels like the bigger historical brands should have individual websites purely from a branding perspective. Thanks for any input!

Can subdomains hurt your primary domain's SEO?
Our primary website https://domain.com has a subdomain https://subDomain.domain.com and on that subdomain we have a jive-hosted community, with a few links to and fro. In GA they are set up as different properties but there are many SEO issues in the jive-hosted site, in which many different people can create content, delete content, comment, etc. There are issues related to how jive structures content, broken links, etc. My question is this: Aside from the SEO issues with the subdomain, can the performance of that subdomain negatively impact the SEO performance and rank of the primary domain? I've heard and read conflicting reports about this and it would be nice to hear from the MOZ community about options to resolve such issues if they exist. Thanks.

When should you redirect a domain completely?
We moved a website over to a new domain name. We used 301 redirects to redirect all the pages individually (around 150 redirects). So my question is, when should we just kill the old site completely and just redirect (forward/point) the old domain over to the new one?

Is it safe to redirect our .nl (netherlands) domain that we have just purchased to our .com domain?
Hi all! We've recently developed a German version of our website with German translation and now we have just purchased a .nl domain, but with this one, we want all of the copy to remain in English. Is it ok to redirect our .nl domain to our current .com website or will this give us bad SEO points? Thank you!

Moving categories to new domain
Hello Mozzers , I'm trying to find best possible solution for this situation. So there is a website (e-commerce) and since it's grew up too much we are looking to move several categories on different domain. The reason for this is that we introduce completely different product group (example: we have products that are related to watches and everything related to watch industry but now we introduce leather products: wallets, bags etc). Do you think it is worth it to move new categories to new domain in order to better target this product group? In case of positive answer which is the best way to do it - 301 redirect or leave the products on this site and build a new site with slightly different product description and names? Regards, Nenad

Demote subdomain sitelink?
Google search is creating 4 sitelinks for a website. One of these is the blog (blog.website.com). Webmaster tools allows for site links to be demoted, but there is no way to demote the blog we which we don't want to show up since it is not a "/" extension. Is there a way to remove it as a site link?

Keyword as domain- worth buying it?
Hi, I just noticed that a top keyword for our industry is available as a domain, but for around $2,500.00 USD. For example, www.chicagoplumber.com. If we already have a pretty well established online identity as, let's say, www.chicagopipes.com, would it be worth buying the new domain and making it our primary? Thanks for your feedback! -Will
