Domain sub-directory not performing
-
We've restructured our site over the past 6 months and I'm going to run you through the whole scenario as I would love any feedback you guys have.
6 months ago we had 2 websites http://boulders-climbing.com (climbing facility) and http://bouldersuk.com (shop).
We made the decision to merge the websites and leverage the SEO on 1 site. Although boulders-climbing.com was the older and more established domain, the company wanted to use bouldersuk.com so a whole new website was designed and boulders-climbing.com was redirected to bouldersuk.com. The climbing facility website now sits at bouldersuk.com and the shop was moved to bouldersuk.com/climbing-shop with 301's for all shop pages.
This has lead to a significant a increase in domain rank for bouldersuk.com and much better rankings for the climbing centre related terms. The desired effect has been achieved, well half of it anyway.
The search rankings for bouldersuk.com/climbing-shop have never reached the previous heights and are still heading in the wrong direction, even though the overall domain ranking has increased by 50%.
What can I do to get the SEO for /climbing-shop working again? We're adding fresh content to our latest news with links through to products and categories, all category pages have A grades. we are attempting to link build but it is much more difficult for e-commerce than for the facilities pages.
Is the SEO of the main site hampering(masking?) the /climbing-shop?
All feedback on the whole process would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

A sub directory is never going to rank like the home page. you can look at linking to try and improve the rank http://thatsit.com.au/seo/tutorials/a-simple-explanation-of-pagerank I would try and push PR from all shop pages to the shop main page, not the root.
Myself I would create a sub domain shop.bouldersuk.com, you will stil be seen as the same site, but will be easier to have the main shop page seen as a home page

Is it better to shorten my existing url to use only keyword after domain with a 301 redirect from existing url
I have a long existing URL that has included my key word but the url has about 5 additional words in the text ( eg url would have " /super widgets in stock at the widget store " as url text after domain. keywords is super widget The URL was at the top of search results for my keyword for many years until recently. Is it better to shorten my url text to now use only my keyword " /super-widgets " after the domain with a 301 direct from my existing url to optimize it Thanks

Multiple domains for the same business
My client purchased over 500 URLs for targeting various customers and ranking for different keywords. It is for the same business though. What is the best strategy to deal with this kind of approach in your opinion. They use different meta data for each of the URLs starting with brand name in meta title. Are there any other points to keep in mind when developing strategy for all those URLs. Is this a good approach?

Hyphens in Domain Name
I have a client who is a business broker. I have just begun working with them, and they are trying to determine the best domain name to use - they have several. business-broker-alabama.com vs businessbrokeralabama.com Which one of these has more value? I know that search engines have somewhat devalued keywords. The first one probably has a little more SEO value, but is going to be a drag in terms of marketing -- saying "business hyphen broker hyphen alabama" is going to get old for them. Thanks!

How deep should I go with a directory site?
I am creating a new site which has a directory component. Based on what I have ready I am inclined to keep the site architecture as flat as possible. However, the natural layout that I have come up with in my head has the directory listings 5 or 6 pages deep in the site structure. I saw in another post that someone in a similar situation was suggesting that going deep like this is fine so long as there are many internal links to the deeper pages to indicate that they are important. Should I make a conscious effort to make the site architecture as flat as possible? Are there any specific guides/resources that address this particular issue that I should be aware of? Thanks!
