Wordpress & use of 'www' vs not for webmaster tools - explanation needed
-
I am having a hard time understanding the issue of canonization of site pages, specifically in regards to the 'www' or 'non-www' versions of a site. And specifically in regards to wordpress.
I can see that it doesn't matter whether you type in 'www' or not in the url for a wordpress site, what is going on in the back end that allows this?
When I link up to google webmaster tools, should i use www or not?
thanks for any help

Thanks Christopher.
Sorry I'm not quite sure what the code you have supplied is for? My site currently works fine with or without the 'www' - but does the code you have supplied acheive something else?
thanks

The issue is www.EXAMPLE.com and EXAMPLE.com are considered two different websites, and Google may split the links in if people are linking to both versions. A 301 redirect tells Google to assume all links are pointed at one version.
Your Question: I can see that it doesn't matter whether you type in 'www' or not in the url for a wordpress site, what is going on in the back end that allows this?
My Answer: This is not WordPress, it is your web host. Most LAMP webhosts will automatically server your website with our without "WWW". WordPress will create the links on the pages it creates to the one specified in your settings, but the site will come up weather or not you use "WWW."
To Address the Concern: Because you are using WordPress, you are probably on Apache, so add this to your .htaccess file in the root directory.
After:
END WordPress
Add:
Rewrite all old filenames RewriteEngine on
Options +FollowSymlinks
rewritecond %{http_host} ^EXAMPLE.com [nc] rewriterule ^(.*)$ http://www.EXAMPLE.com/$1 [r=301,nc]Test with and without "WWW." Test with a different browser.

Hi Joseph, do you run into any SSL errors by using absolute links especially with images? I hate when you get an error message on secure pages saying that some content is not secure would you like to see it... do you think leaving the http part out is a better idea for sites that have SSL pages, use something like www.mydomain.com instead?
Thanks!

Hello David,
When you install wordpress it installs the files which can be found with or without the www.
On the settings page you can add the www as the version you want to use.
What is going on in the back that allows this ? => ( .htacess file re-write rules)
Your host should have rewrite rule available via .htacess file This will rewite all the pages on the site to which ever version you choose.
then in your webmaster account choose the www. version as well.
Redirecting your site to one version or the other is going to reduce two versions of your site down to one version so you do not have duplicate content issues or penalties.
I always use the full url (absolute link) with the www.for several reasons below.
This should always be used in your links within your site and the code as well.
Absolute link example is = http://www.your-site-url.com
-
easier and faster for search engines to follow
-
safer when worried about site hijacking
-
works better in emails ( make sure a visitor gets to the right page)
-
better if your content gets stolen and the thief does not take time to check and fix all the code (i actually caught someone who stole one of my sites content this way )
If you use one version all the time you are also going to make sure you get all your link benefits to the right domain and not split between the two.
Some seo's and many web designers don't use the full url to save time and code bloat of the site. Myself as well as many other think the absolute link has added benefits.
I hope that helps.

Clean URL vs. Parameter URL and Using Canonical URL...That's a Mouthfull!
Hi Everyone, I a currently migrating a Magento site over to Shopify Plus and have a question about best practices for using the canonical URL. There is a competitor that I believe is not doing it the correct way, so I want to make sure my way is the better choice. With 'Vendor Pages' in Shopify, they show up looking like: https://www.campusprotein.com/collections/vendors?q=Cellucor. Not as clean. Problem is that Shopify also creates https://www.campusprotein.com/collections/cellucor. Same products, same page, just a different more clean URL. I am seeing both indexed in Google. What I want to do is basically create a canonical URL from the URL with the parameter that points to the clean URL. The two pages are very similar. The only difference is that the clean URL page has some additional content at the top of the page. I would say the two pages are 90% the same. Do you see any issue with that?

Want to move site to wordpress and keep links without using redicrects
I have an old cluny site that has been around for about 56 years. It is on the homestead platform. I want to move the site to a thesis theme 2.1 wordpress platform without losing my links. I would prefer not to do 301 redicrects. With thesis I can specify the URL for each page of the wordpress site, however the wordpress site is hosted on hostgator as a subdomain of another site and the other problem is that wordpress adds a back slash that is not present on the old site. I can, however add .html to the URL's for pages on the wordpress site to conform to the URL's on the old html site. Will this work? thx Paul p.s. the URL for my old site is www.affordable-uncontested-divorce.com

Image & Video Sitemaps - Submitted vs. Indexed
Hi Mozzers, I have read all the relevant blogs from media indexing experts like Phil Nottingham and have followed Google's best practice as well as advice from similar discussions on here. We have submitted video and image sitemaps to WT, and the image sitemap has 33 indexed from 720 submitted images, and the video 170 indexed from 738 submitted. With the image sitemap the number (33) has remained steady while the submitted has grown by over 100 in the last month. The video has shown signs of indexing new videos however but still not the amount that were submitted. Thus far, I have followed the guidelines sitemap structure as per Google. We are using Cloudfront so I have added and verified our cloudfront server in the same WT account. If anyone has any advice, it would be most appreciated. There is no duplicate content and the robots.txt is not blocking anything within the sitemap. Image sitemap: view-source:http://www.clowdy.com/sitemap.images.xml

Tool to search relative vs absolute internal links
I'm preparing for a site migration from a .co.uk to a .com and I want to ensure all internal links are updated to point to the new primary domain. What tool can I use to check internal links as some are relative and others are absolute so I need to update them all to relative.

'External nofollow' in a robots meta tag? (advertorial links)
I believe this has never worked? It'd be an easy way of preventing any penalties from Google's recent crackdown on paid links via advertorials. When it's not possible to nofollow each external link individually, what are people doing? Nofollowing and/or noindexing the whole page?

When should we use Remove URLs feature on Google Webmasters Tool?
Hi there, I run an ecommerce website on Magento. We are no longer using a category. It actually does not appear on the menu: mydomain.com/category.html If this is the case, do you recommend to remove it through the Removal URL feature on GWT? I don't want this to affect the juice of other links of the site such as: mydomain.com/product.html Thanks very much. Regards

Smart phone shows both mobile & desktop version of www.innoviafilms.com
Good morning from 2 degrees C mostly cloudy wetherby UK, Image this situation... Ive got two versions of a website: A desktop version & a mobile version, here are their respective urls: Desk top: http://www.innoviafilms.com Mobile: http://www.innoviafilms.com/m/home.aspx With blackberry bold in hand I type in via google search "Innovia films" i click on the search snippet and it renders the desktop version. But when i type the url directly in my Blackberry bold 9700 it returns the mobile version 😞 This confuses me. Having read this: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2011/02/making-websites-mobile- friendly.html I thought the desktop version would render in smartphones which the balckberry bold is. So my question is... "Why does the the mobile version only appear when you type in www.innoviafilms.com on a blackberry (and iphone 4) and the desktop version appears only when you enter "Innovia films" via google search" Any insights welcome 🙂
