What can I do to improve my site's local search ranking?
-
I've read a lot about the "Magic 7" ranking factors for local search, and I feel like in a lot of ways, my site (www.imageworkscreative.com) is doing all the right things and still not having terrific results. The only thing I can think of to really improve upon is how often our local keywords are mentioned on our pages - maybe setting up a local blog or something similar would be helpful? Adding footers that include the names of local cities?
Does anyone have any pointers for me? We would really like to rank for things like dc web design, web design va, etc. - and fast.
We have (recent) links from two local Chambers of Commerce and we're working on getting accredited by the BBB. I feel like those listings will help us, but there has to be more we can do.

Thanks. Our address is on our site, and we have hundreds of citation. We are a paid YEXT partner as well as Locaeze.
Our area (DC Metro) has literally dozens of towns wihtin miles, so we need a stratgy for us (and our clients that works) We feel we have tried everything. THanks so much for your reponse!

Hi Jess,
Website design and SEO companies are not considered to be truly local by Google, and it has been a handful of years now since Google showed them in the local pack of results. It is Google's opinion that these types of businesses conduct most transactions virtually. Google's local index is meant to be used only by businesses that make face-to-face contact with clients at the company's physical location (like a dentist) or at the clients' locales (like a plumber). While it's certainly true that some design firms do have face-to-face transactions with some or all of their clients, Google feels that, in general, this is a predominantly virtual category of businesses.
Because of this, your firm will not be able to take the local search marketing steps that a dentist or plumber would, and will need to rely on organic SEO to compete with other design firms which are also striving to rank for a variety of city terms. Your best shot at this will likely involve creating unique content about your existing clients in these target cities and pairing that with other work, such as the earning of links and social media involvement.
Hope this helps!

Nice website. It sounds like you are thinking along the right track, but here are my thoughts based on your question:
1. If you do decide to use more keywords, be sure to use the exact phrase for which you'd like to rank in a very limited number of places, but be careful not to over do it with keyword usage. It's very easy to cross into spam-land on this with G.
2. Web design in a major metroplex like DC or statewide for VA is competitive and consistently raking highly for this if you are not will likely take some time, particularly as web firms tend to be very active online. Having said that your site is established as an analysis of your link profile could also be helpful in planning what is needed as far as anchor text and types of links.
3. The key to local SEO are citations and high quality, relevant content. Citations include the chamber of commerce and BBB, both of which you mentioned, so again you are approaching this correctly. The real key is to be thorough (go through the usual citation list an then I recommend whitespark.ca) and to start with your Google Local and Bing Local accounts as those are the lowest hanging fruit. I have not done a full analysis, so I apologize of you have already done some of these steps and I am covering them twice.
The following is a blog post on how to properly build citations (full disclosure, I am the author).

Let me know if more detail on any of this would help,
Michael

Jess,
There's a lot that you can do. Please review this post from David Mihm(the local search God): http://moz.com/blog/local-search-ranking-factors-2013
Some suggestions right off the bat.
- Going after local citations is great. So the Chamber of Commerce and BBB are great for building up local citations, but keep in mind that there are hundreds of them. If you haven't used GetListed.org, I would highly recommend it.
- Add your address to your website. I didn't see it anywhere. It should be on your contact page or on your footer.
- Claim your Google+ Local page and get reviews. Google loves to see reviews for small businesses.
I hope that helps.
- Richard.

How does indexing backlinks affect SEO and search engine rankings?
Indexing backlinks plays a crucial role in the overall SEO strategy and search engine rankings. When search engines like Google crawl and index a website, they also consider the quality and relevance of the backlinks pointing to that site. Here's why indexing backlinks is important: Visibility in Search Results: Indexing ensures that search engines recognize and attribute value to the backlinks you have acquired. When indexed, these backlinks contribute to the overall link profile of your website and can positively impact your visibility in search results. Faster Indexation: By submitting your backlinks for indexing, you can speed up the process of search engines discovering and recognizing those links. This helps search engines recognize the relevance and authority of your website sooner. Enhanced Crawling and Ranking: Indexing allows search engines to crawl and evaluate the backlinks pointing to your site. These backlinks are considered as signals of trust and authority, which can influence your search engine rankings. Improved Domain Authority: When high-quality backlinks pointing to your site are indexed, they contribute to your website's Domain Authority (DA). A higher DA indicates a more authoritative and reputable website, which can positively impact your rankings and organic search visibility. Competitive Advantage: Indexing your backlinks gives you a competitive edge by ensuring that the value and authority of those links are properly recognized and taken into account by search engines. This can help you outrank competitors who may have unindexed or low-quality backlinks. It's important to note that not all backlinks may require manual indexing, as search engines can discover and index them naturally. However, for specific or newly acquired backlinks that may not be indexed quickly, manual submission or using indexing services can help ensure they are recognized by search engines and contribute to your overall SEO efforts.

Is too high a frequency of 'money' keywords backlinks considered factor for Penguin penalties, even if the money keywords are on reputable pages ?
Is too high a frequency of 'money' keywords backlinks (eg. a money keyword backlink for moz.com would be "Seo tools") a considered factor for Penguin penalties even if the money keywords are only on reputable pages, with decent PA, DA and trust ?

Backlinks on sites that aren't relevant, how does google determine relevancy?
I have a competitor who I've talked about on here before about how they passed us in ranking for our main keywords and that they were a new site ( less than 6 months old ). Well after further digging a few things were found out: Our site seems to have a penguin penalty causing our keywords ( a group of synonyms as well ) from ranking better than rank 30. As well our competitor has been using this weird backlink tactic of using SEO sites ( a friend? ), a parent site to prop it up ( footer links and others ) as well has links inside articles that aren't relevant as in having a commercial niche page inside a lawyer site page talking about phone dialing. Then the low DA directory sites. I'm curious as to if penguin algo will catch them once it comes out, if not penguin a manual review would certainly catch their tactics, but this site is doing everything else other than proper SEO. What do you think?

Maintaining or improving keyword ranking
I started a second website recently and it is doing very well. I am on the first page for a competitive keyword - spot 5 according to Moz. It is actually a category page that is ranking so well which is a surprise to me as I have read many times that I should deindex category pages due to duplicate content! My questions: 1. How do I get backlinks to a CATEGORY page?! I have been able to get backlinks to certain posts because my website is a deal blog and other deal blogs give me credit for popular deals by linking to my post. 2. How can I maintain this high ranking? Of course I want in spot 3 but this website isn't even 2 months old so I know I should be patient. At this point, I just want to stay on the first page. What is the best way to do that? I am about to fill out the SEO stuff for the category page which I haven't done yet. Thanks!

Can't rank with certain keywords for the life of me
I have a website http://www.freescrabbledictionary.com in which functions as a scrabble dictionary lookup and word finder for scrabble. There are many keywords that rank well for this niche but the main ones I target are Scrabble Dictionary Scrabble Cheat Scrabble Word Finder Scrabble Help I used to rank well for all these keywords, I am 4th with scrabble dictionary currently but with the other 3 am no where near the top. On March 24th I dropped off the map for scrabble cheat, scrabble word finder and scrabble help. I actually dropped to 9/10th for scrabble dictionary on that date as well but since then I have been able to hold on steady to 4th. I can't figure out why I can't rank for those other keywords anymore. Its almost like Google has penalized me for those keywords. I have contacted Google a few times to ask if I have any penalties and they have told me that I don't. Even though in my backlinking I have targeted these keywords I can't seem to rank for them no matter what I do. The only idea I have come up with is that Google has re-associated those other 3 keywords in a group and separated scrabble dictionary on its own. I have other sites I have created in the same niche and I have noticed if the URL contains "word", "Finder" and/or "cheat" I can rank in the 3 keywords within about a week all the way up to the second page. My main site FSD has the highest DA and PA compared to my other sites. Any idea why I can't seem to rank for those other 3 keywords anymore?

How do sites have so many 'total links'?
I've been analyzing some of our competitors: essayedge.com and papercheck.com Both sites have a large number of 'total links'... about 93,000 each. The former has about 1,200 linking root domains while the latter only has 195. Even for 1,200 linking root domains, 93k total links seems like a ton to me. Our site has 101 linking root domains and only 299 'total links'. I'm quite new to this whole SEO game and admittedly still learning a TON. Am I missing something here? How do sites generate so many links? This seems nuts to me. Thanks for any help!

How can I verify who links to me?
I need to verify all the inbound links I have coming in to my site. I've tried using OSE but have been told it does not scrape many smaller sites so cannot be sure of it's accuracy (especially since when I ran it, it returned a small % of the link i know are out there). Is there a way to do this in Analytics? Or another way? Thanks

Domain position on site:domain.com search
Hi, After the last week Google algotithm update, my web site index appears on 4th position when I search for site:www.domain.com If I make a simple search for domain or domain.com it ranks on first position. Is this a sign of a penalty ? What would be the cause ? Thanks
