Hiding tag and category root in wordrpess = plunge rank
-
I deleted the "tag" portion of my tag urls's that were ranking pretty high....so:
www.businessinteriors.co.uk/tag/office-fit-out-bristol became
www.businessinteriors.co.uk/office fit-out-bristol
The old tag page ranked 7 before the change and even 3rd at one stage.
The new name page without the tag has re-appeared at 23....
So quite a plunge in ranking from the change and this is across the board for all my tags (200) that were ranking high and I wanted to improve.
Have I made a major error? Or will they naturally start coming back to where they were before?
Weirdly some of the changes have had a positive impact - so ranking has gone up slightly in some areas..but completely out done by the plungers :-s

yes...the wordpress plugin I used took care of that....

Did you 301 the old urls to the new? Otherwise you would have all your incoming links pointing at pages that are 404ing

Long Title Tags
Hi guys, We have product e-commerce title tags which are over 60 characters - around 80 plus. The reason we added them in there is to incorporate

more information for Google. The format of these title tags are: Name + Colour + Rug Type + Origin Name = for people searching for the name of the rug
Color = people searching for a specific color
Type = The type of rug (e.g. normal or designer)
Origin = Where the rug is for. So this title will cover people searching for: People searching for designer rugs, the specific colour and also where it comes from. This then results in the title tag going way over 60 characters - around 80-90 characters. -- Would it be wise to try and shrink it down to under 60 characters, and what would be a good approach to do this? Bing Ranking Factors
Question... I have a few clients that rank well for Google (first page) but are not ranking as well on Bing (page 5). Any suggestions on what to do to increase Bing ranking? I understand that Google and Bing use different algorithms, but just curious how you can increase ranking. Appreciate your input. Thanks

How and When Should I use Canonical Url Tags?
Pretty new to the SEO universe. But I have not used any canonical tags, just because there is not definitive source explaining exactly when and why you should use them??? Am I the only one who feels this way?

Product Category Subcategory hierarchy
Hi all, I am developing an ecommerce store and would like some advice on the Category / Product URL structure for SEO purposes. Products have many options Products belong to a sub-category. Sub categories belong to a category There will be a maximum of 500 products in the database. 1. http://shop.com/{category}/{product_slug}?{product_option} Flattened with query string option http://shop.com/apple/iphone-5s?model=32gb&colour=white 2. http://shop.com/{category}/{subcategory}/{product_slug}?{product_option} // Hierarchical with query string option 3. http://shop.com/{category}/{product_slug}/{product_option} 4. http://shop.com/{category}/{subcategory}/{product_slug}/{product_option} 5. http://shop.com/{category}/{product-slug} http://shop.com/apple/iphone-5s-32gb-black Option 5 seems best to me, however I am also worried about duplicate content between pages. http://shop.com/apple/iphone-5s-32gb-black http://shop.com/apple/iphone-5s-64gb-black http://shop.com/apple/iphone-5s-64gb-white The above 3 examples will all have very similar content. And if I use canonical url tag, which product page would I refer these pages to? At least with Option 1 I can use the canonical tag to tell search engines that pages with get parameters can point to the non get parameter version. In addition to Option 5, should I create a http://shop.com/{category}/{subcategory} page? That way Option 5 item canonical tags can point to that page. e.g. http://shop.com/apple/iphone-5s which would contain product summary detail with product options listed on the page? Am I missing something here or can anybody provide a better solution?

Internal page ranking
If I have a domain: Example.com I want this domain to rank for several keywords. I build a page on the domain called Example.com/glasses If I SEO the page Example.com/glasses with backlinks etc... will that URL come up on google or will it simply bring Example.com up on the SERPS. If I have three keywords, should I make a subpage for each page and SEO that page? Will that make the domain rank for all three keywords?

Alt tags
What options do I have if all my images are pulled in by tags background images? It's a customized CMS and the designer put all images in the CSS so he would have more control over image size. I would like to somehow add description elements to the alt tags Thank, Eric

Keyword Ranking Question
I have recently hired a SEO company to help with our keyword. My question is what are the best tools to use to verify what that are reporting. I can do an unpersonalized search, but I am likely still getting the my local results. I have been using the SEOmoz rank tracker in the past but for some reason it is not able to retrieve results over the past day or so. Are there any other good tools to check ranking for an exact url at the for non-localized, non personalized results? Thanks for the suggestions.
