How fast to change keyword rich anchor text
-
Hello,
A client of mine has a site with almost all keyword rich anchor text, The problem is on on a bunch of little blogs and some (mostly sitewide) paid links.
We are working to move into 100% white hat SEO, but we're doing it slowly.
My question is, how fast can we change the anchor text on all of these links? I'm worried that if I do it too fast that it will be a red flag.
Thanks.

I'd say the blogs probably aren't doing anything for you algorithmically and I'm guessing they're not what was sending you the non-repeat traffic. If you're paying for sitewides that are not nofollowed, you should think seriously about stopping that. Pay for links on other sites as much as you like but make sure they're nofollowed.

I see, I'll be more specific.
The client put up 40 blogs with no backlinks to the blogs and keyword rich anchor text.
The client paid a monthly fee to 8 or so websites for sitewide image ads.
We took off half the blogs and half of the sitewides and non-repeat traffic dropped by about 70%.
Now I am very shy about nofollowing or deleting anything, and I just want to know conservatively how fast do I change the remaining blog/paid link anchor text?
I'm link building with good content and eventually all this stuff will go away.
Thanks for getting back to me, Chris.

I don't think of the kind of links you mentioned in your question as "paid links". I think of paid links (of the variety Takeshi describes) as those that you pay for on a monthly basis and I think Takeshi is correct in that if the publisher isn't blatant they can be hard to detect--but not always. Those are the easiest kind to get rid of--you just stop paying for them. The kind of links you mentioned I think of as just run of the mill spam links--either they were free or they had a one time fee or someone was paid to add them to a network of some kind.

Hi Chris,
Could you look at something. Takeshi Young, who has gave me some really good advice, told me a couple of days ago:
"In regards to paid links, Google has a very hard time detecting these unless you are being blatant about them, and you will typically receive a notice in GWT if you receive a penalty for it. Check to see if there are any manual penalties on your site in GWT. If not, chances are Google has not discovered that the links are paid (yet).
Just trying to settle the confusion. I need to be very careful, as we took off a bunch of links before and rankings tanked.
I need to go the conservative route, but I don't know what that is. You've always gave good advice Chris, thanks for being in on this one.

If they're all followed links with exact match anchor text and you're thinking about making changes to them, I'd just start nofollowing the vast majority of them--maybe even all of them. Google already knows they're their and already knows they're spam and knows to discount them and now you want to go back and change them? I'd say no--as in nofollow. Then spend the client's money building higher quality links and citations.

Content change and variations in ranking
Hello, I have create a new webpage and asked google in the webmaster tool to crawl it. Within minutes it is ranked at a certain spot. I did make changes to it to increase the ranking and right away I could see variations in ranking either up or down ? I have done the same same thing for a page that has been existing on my website for many years. I changed the content, asked the webmaster tool to re-crawl it. It got the new content within minutes but the ranking doesn't seem to change. Maybe my content isn't good enough but I doubt. Could it be that on old pages it takes a couple weeks to see ranking changes whereas on new page it is instantaneous. Has anyone experienced something similar ? Thank you,

Facet Values as Anchor text
Hi I've reviewing our internal linking structure & have found that the facets/filter buttons on a category, are crawled and have anchor text to each link, for example: The anchor text to filter the product listing results by those under £50 would be: | Facet Value Less than £50.00 (15) Less than £50.00 (15) | This also has the source URL & destination URL of http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/lockers I haven't come across this before - is this an issue?

Dear All, We have taken and a product called webacelator from our hosting UKfast and our ip address is changing. UKFasts asked to point DNS to different IP in order to route the traffic through webacelator, which will enhance browsing speed. I am concerned, will this change effect our rankings. Your responses highly appreciated.

Advanced SEO - What would you do after you run out of keywords?
Hello! Our company has been growing in terms of traffic and ranking well for a couple of years but we are now kind of stagnating because we just don't know what to do next. We have a good blog - and with our blogs, we have been targeting all major keywords with their related keywords as a bucket. - "keyword theme / page" for a long time. But it seems we now don't have any major keyword theme to write about. What is worse is that we don't see any traffic growth since 2014 September. (although we added many good blogs) So what would do you when you run out of keywords? or keyword themes? Would you just keep pumping in more blogs and hope that you get more clicks? or at some point, you just don't care about keywords and write whatever relevant to your site? Wouldn't it hurt our site if we create similar keyword themed pages? (like regurgitating our keywords?) or even same keyword targeting pages? You must have similar experience if you are an owner of a niche site. Can you please share your experience with this kind of headaches? Thank you and look forward to your comments.

Meta Keywords: Do They Hurt Rankings
I know that Google doesn't use meta keywords, but does it hurt to have anything in there? Just wondering if I need to remove all the meta keywords that are on my site, or are they harmless to have. Also, would meta keywords ever be used by an internal search plug-in if we were to install one in the future, or do they generally look at the product title and description for that info?

Worth removing keywords...?
I was just going over a site I manage and noticed it had a load of meta keywords on it. Probably 10-15 keywords per page... Do you think this is harming the site? Is it worth removing them?

Rich snippet on main index page
Hello, I am using a 3rd party company to generate reviews for my website. I want to optimize my site for the index page to see a star rating in the SERP. I am pulling the the count of the number of reviews and the average rating from my review partner and rendering this on the page. It is not visible to a visitor to the site. My page has been marked up correctly as you can see using the rich snippet testing tool http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.jsshirts.com.au However the stars are not showing in SERP's. Does anyone have any ideas as to why the stars are not showing. Many thanks, Jason
