My Recent Drop from the first page
-
Hello, I have a website design operation in Akron, Ohio. I have been ranking on the first page for the last year or so. Just recently (within the last 5 -6 weeks) I have fell back to page 2 on google. I have changed up my content a little bit on my home page, adding more references to the "Web Design Akron Ohio" keyword. I have looked at the sites ahead of me and I noticed that most of the highest ranking sites are using Meta-Keywords, which moz suggest not to. I added Meta-Keywords about 10 days ago just testing if there would be any ranking change and so far no change at all.
Would someone be kind enough to look at my site and throw out some suggestions of what I might do to get back to the first page?
I'm trying to rank for "web design akron ohio" and my URL is http://www.uswebproducts.com
Any help would be appreciated.

1. For increasing Domain Authority, as mentioned in my other answer this is about gaining just a few really good quality links from highly trafficked and trusted sources. This can be done more proactively through maybe outreach or trying to get a story about you done somewhere, or land an interview etc. Or it can be done more passively through exceptional content, or an exceptional brand and you will gain links as a result.
2. Outbound links don't really carry weight in the sense of authority being given to your site the way an inbound link does. Having outbound links on your site may help to a small degree with perhaps your trustworthiness in Google's eyes though.
3. That is correct.

Hi Scott
I don't think further on-page tweaking for keywords is the best approach to be visible again for "web design akron ohio" as Google already "knows" this is what the site is about, and you will probably not boost ranking there by small tweaks to keywords on-site.
We know Google knows the site is about this by plugging in your domain to the AdWords keyword suggestion tool --> http://screencast.com/t/rZ0E74GVjeY
I think a combination of perhaps these three things;
- Local SEO
- Links
- Social
Local SEO
For local SEO, make sure your local listings, citations, reviews etc are all complete, updated, current etc. Use https://getlisted.org/ or something like Whitespark's local citation finder/builder to help you there.
Links
I find for small/local business you don't need a lot of links, but you might need a few high quality and recent links to help get you back where you need to be. High quality means, editorially chosen/placed within the body of content - linked to probably with brand anchor text and in a good context about your business. This might mean a story in a local news site, or a good mention in a higher authority blog - check this out for some ideas: http://pointblankseo.com/link-building-strategies
You don't have an over-optimized link profile from an anchor text perspective at the moment, so that's good - keep the links as natural as possible.
Social
What I mean here is build the authority / relevance of your business in one or maybe two social networks and make sure to clearly associate your profile with your domain.
In your industry, you'd probably want to get really good with maybe Twitter, Google Plus or even Pinterest (where you can share nice visual/design content) - and make sure you link to/from the profile and your domain. In the case of Google Plus, use rel author and rel publisher.

I have looked in the Google Webmaster Tools and there are no errors or flags. I did check the backlinks with my site as well as some competitors and I noticed my Domain Authority is pretty low (27). I have viewed the video about Domain Authority and I have also read some blog post. It does not sound like anything I do will have an overnight effect on my domain.
-
Is there any factor within the scope of increasing Domain Authority that I should focus on more so than any other?
-
How much weight does an outbound link carry?
-
I'm under the impression that an inbound link will have more of an effect on my SERP than an outbound link, is this true?
Thank you for your input!

So the penalty was revoked and in one day you were On page one. Never seen this happening in my life tbh or read it anywhere normally people wait for an update. Could be wrong here but I doubt it.
Anyways, in regards to our friend here I will insist to my original response, if he has no manual penalty notification a URL with a web site could be handy
-
I'm afraid you are wrong Yiannis, my own Website had a manual penalty for over 1 year and as it was a "partial-match" it only affected "some" of its ability to rank, so instead of being in the 1st spot we were on page 2 position 11 - 15 for the whole year. 2 weeks ago the penalty was revoked and the very next day we found ourselves back in the 1st page. It will take some time until reaching a good rank following Google's guidelines from now on, but it is the only way.
-
Hello Scott,
As Federico pointed out MEta Keywords wont help much. On the other hand I do not think that manual action has anything to do with it as you wouldn't be on page 2 if you were penalised. Maybe your competitors built more content or link.
I am in no position to assist further unless I can have a look at your web site and the back link profile.
Hope this help
-
Hey Scott,
Have you checked GWT for any manual action notice?
About the keyword meta, it is completely useless, Google doesn't use it at all, you can remove that safely, the ranking drop has nothing to do with it.
Did you run some backlink reports on your competitors? (to see if they have higher authority than yours, more backlinks, etc.).

Page performance and reinstating previous version
Hi all, I hope there is a search guru out there who can assist with this. I decided 3 months ago that our SEO contractors weren't doing as well as they should be and after long discussion, i reoptimised all pages myself. Most are performing better now but sales and enquiries went through the floor. I have today found ranking information from the week before i made the changes, something i thought i had lost. Now i have this, i have found that one of the two main pages has gone from position 1 to position 38. This explains the problem. I know all things are not equal and in the intervening months, competitors have updated their sites and links, however, this is the security sector and things don't change much, so, all things being equal, would reinstating the old version of the page be likely to reinstate my previous ranking position or thereabouts? or will the MIGHTY GOOGLE punish me in some way for swapping back to a previous page version? We use a CMS system and all revisions are stored. The page in question is www.compoundsecurity.co.uk/security-equipment and the keyword in question is 'wireless alarms'. Any help will be greatly appreciated by this non SEO plebe. Cheers Si P.S. feel free to berate me for not recording all pertinent info about rankings BEFORE i star playing around with the site. It was my first time and i have well and truly learn my lesson.

Dex Landing Pages!
Hello Moz-ers! Have a question for the community that I'd like some feedback on, here is the situation My client owns a local business, which has a website that we built for them last year. Rankings and traffic have been great, and they're doing well in a competitive market. This client also works with Dex Media, who manages some of the marketing for this business. In this effort Dex has purchased a few variations of the branded domain names, and has placed landing pages at these URL's with basic information, phone number, etc. Seems like a standard page for one of these sites. These sites have different phone numbers, used for tracking leads from those particular pages. To me, these seem totally unnecessary and also as though it could be something pulling visitors away from the main website, which details all of their services, etc. It also seems like it could pretty easily confuse or frustrate potential visitors with the 4 similar domain names, each with different numbers of the same business. I told the client that I thought this might be the case, and at the very least they should ask Dex about acquiring ownership of those extra domains containing their brand in addition to seeing if they would be able to just redirect those URLs to the main domain. They responded by saying that Google doesn't care about any of this, citing this article: https://support.google.com/adwordspolicy/answer/2643759?hl=en# To me, that support link appears to not address the issue at hand, as it focuses mainly on proxy URL's being used giving the example of proxy.example.com Can anyone weigh in here with an opinion? Is there any reason to think that these extra domains would not have a potential negative impact on client traffic/rank for the main domain? Thanks! Tyler

What is the best method for getting pure Javascript/Ajax pages Indeded by Google for SEO?
I am in the process of researching this further, and wanted to share some of what I have found below. Anyone who can confirm or deny these assumptions or add some insight would be appreciated. Option: 1 If you're starting from scratch, a good approach is to build your site's structure and navigation using only HTML. Then, once you have the site's pages, links, and content in place, you can spice up the appearance and interface with AJAX. Googlebot will be happy looking at the HTML, while users with modern browsers can enjoy your AJAX bonuses. You can use Hijax to help ajax and html links coexist. You can use Meta NoFollow tags etc to prevent the crawlers from accessing the javascript versions of the page. Currently, webmasters create a "parallel universe" of content. Users of JavaScript-enabled browsers will see content that is created dynamically, whereas users of non-JavaScript-enabled browsers as well as crawlers will see content that is static and created offline. In current practice, "progressive enhancement" in the form of Hijax-links are often used. Option: 2

In order to make your AJAX application crawlable, your site needs to abide by a new agreement. This agreement rests on the following: The site adopts the AJAX crawling scheme. For each URL that has dynamically produced content, your server provides an HTML snapshot, which is the content a user (with a browser) sees. Often, such URLs will be AJAX URLs, that is, URLs containing a hash fragment, for example www.example.com/index.html#key=value, where #key=value is the hash fragment. An HTML snapshot is all the content that appears on the page after the JavaScript has been executed. The search engine indexes the HTML snapshot and serves your original AJAX URLs in search results. In order to make this work, the application must use a specific syntax in the AJAX URLs (let's call them "pretty URLs;" you'll see why in the following sections). The search engine crawler will temporarily modify these "pretty URLs" into "ugly URLs" and request those from your server. This request of an "ugly URL" indicates to the server that it should not return the regular web page it would give to a browser, but instead an HTML snapshot. When the crawler has obtained the content for the modified ugly URL, it indexes its content, then displays the original pretty URL in the search results. In other words, end users will always see the pretty URL containing a hash fragment. The following diagram summarizes the agreement:

How does recent Google update affect e-commerce sites:
Most ecommerce sites use the original manufacturer product descriptions in their content. The product features and specifications are the content made by the manufacturer. Sometimes manufacturers insist that the ecommerce sites should use their original content and it is impossible to change what available in the original content and rewrite it.
