Do you choose PA/DA over PR when purchasing expiring domains?
-
Hey guys,
So a lot has been said about private blog network. I have but only 1 question: Do you choose PA/DA over PR when purchasing expiring domains or PR is most critical?
Thanks a lot!

That's a really good answer! I have seen some REALLY confusing metrics on the web, and in particular one site that claims to calculate link juice -
<cite class="_jd">www.ecreativeim.com/pagerank-link-juice-calculator.php</cite> The calculations done by this tool indicate that almost no link juice is passed without PR! I beg to differ - what do you say?KeithPS: Love the tools you guys design!

Obviously, we at Moz have some bias toward PA/DA, but I think there's a lot of danger in focusing on any one metric when buying a domain. For example, PA/DA look more at the strength of your link profile than certain spam factors, so we may miss if a domain has been penalized or devalued (something we're actively working on). The raw strength of a link profile, even without mitigating circumstance can be misleading, too - for example, if the domain isn't relevant to the new use then buying an repurposing it could result in a site with substantially lower value than the original.
The biggest issue with (toolbar) PR is that it's often out of date. It can also be gamed. Shady domain sellers can do things like mass 301-redirects that make a domain look stronger for a while (until the toolbar PR gets updated) but disappear as soon as they pull the plug - usually after you've written the check.
Long story short, it depends a lot on your use case, and I'd strongly recommend against relying on just one metric.

How does Google handle product detail page links hiden in a <noscript>tag?</noscript>
Hello, During my research of our website I uncovered that our visible links to our product detail pages (PDP) from grid/list view category-nav/search pages are <nofollowed>and being sent through a click tracking redirect with the (PDP) appended as a URL query string. But included with each PDP link is a <noscript>tag containing the actual PDP link. When I confronted our 3rd party e-commerce category-nav/search provider about this approach here is the response I recieved:</p> <p style="padding-left: 30px;">The purpose of these links is to firstly allow us to reliably log the click and then secondly redirect the visitor to the target PDP.<br /> In addition to the visible links there is also an "invisible link" inside the no script tag. The noscript tag prevents showing of the a tag by normal browsers but is found and executed by bots during crawling of the page.<br /> Here a link to a blog post where an SEO proved this year that the noscript tag is not ignored by bots: <a href="http://www.theseotailor.com.au/blog/hiding-keywords-noscript-seo-experiment/" target="_blank">http://www.theseotailor.com.au/blog/hiding-keywords-noscript-seo-experiment/<br /> </a> <br /> So the visible links are not obfuscating the PDP URL they have it encoded as it otherwise cannot be passed along as a URL query string. The plain PDP URL is part of the noscript tag ensuring discover-ability of PDPs by bots.</p> <p>Does anyone have anything in addition to this one blog post, to substantiate the claim that hiding our links in a <noscript> tag are in fact within the SEO Best Practice standards set by Google, Bing, etc...? </p> <p>Do you think that this method skirts the fine line of grey hat tactics? Will google/bing eventually penalize us for this?</p> <p>Does anyone have a better suggestion on how our 3rd party provider could track those clicks without using a URL redirect & hiding the actual PDP link?</p> <p>All insights are welcome...Thanks!</p> <p>Jordan K.</p></noscript></nofollowed>

Dealing with links to your domain that the previous owner set up
Hey everyone, I rebranded my company at the end of last year from a name that was fairly unique but sounded like I cleaned headstones instead of building websites. I opted for a name that I liked, it reflected my heritage - however it also seems to be quite common. Anyway, I registered the domain name as it was available as the previous owner's company had been wound up. It's only been in the last week or two where I've managed to have a website on that domain and I've been tracking it's progress through Moz, Google & Bing Webmaster tools. Both the webmaster tools are reporting back that my site triggers 404 errors for some specific links. However, I don't have or have never used those links before. I think the previous owner might have created the links before he went bust. My question is in two parts. The first part is how do I find out what websites are linking to me with these broken URL's, and the second is will these 404'ing links affect my SEO? Thanks!

How to consolidating my domains to the .com
Hey Mozers, Just watched Rands white board friday about consolidating domains https://mza.seotoolninja.com/blog/rebrand-or-redirect-my-site-consolidate-multiple-sites-whiteboard-friday I would like to consider looking at consolidating my cctld's zenory.co.nz and zenory.com.au over to zenory.com I have been told by our previous seo guy to go international eg. target USA, NZ and Australia. Consolidate into 1 website (your .com), and separate your website into different subfolders for each target country zenory.com/us/, zenory.com/au/, zenory.com/nz/. If I'm not really writing country specific content for the blog I could just keep 1 blog at zenory.com/blog/ Can anyone recommend a guide around the technical side of how to apply these changes without causing issues? Our website is custom built with wordpress being the blog. Any advice will be much appreciated Cheers

Cloaking/Malicious Code
Does anybody have any experience with software for identifying this sort of thing? I was informed by a team we are working with that our website may have been compromised and I wanted to know what programs people have used to identify cloaking attempts and/or bad code. Thanks everybody!

Penalty for all new sites on a domain?
Hi @all, a friend has an interesting problem. He got a manuel link penalty in the end of 2011...it is an old domain with domainpop >5000 but with a lot bad links (wigdet and banners and other seo domains, but nothing like scrapebox etc)...he lost most of the traffic a few days after the notification in WMT (unnatural links) and an other time after the first pinguin update in april´12. In the end of 2012 after deleting (or nofollowing) and disavow a lot of links google lifted the manuel penalty (WMT notification). But nothing happened after lifting, the rankings didn´t improve (after 4 months already!). Almost all money keywords aren´t in the top 100, no traffic increases and he has good content on this domain. We built a hand of new trust links to test some sites but nothing improved. We did in february a test and build a completely new site on this domain, it´s in the menu and got some internal links from content...We did it, because some sites which weren´t optimized before the penalty (no external backlinks) are still ranking on the first google site for small keywords. After a few days the new site started to rank with our keyword between 40-45. That was ok and as we expected. This site was ranking constantly there for almost 6 weeks and now its gone since ten days. We didn´t change anything. It´s the same phenomena like the old sites on this domain...the site doesnt even rank for the title! Could it still be an manuel penalty for the hole domain or what kind of reasons are possible? Looking forward for your ideas and hope you unterstand the problem! 😉 Thanks!!!

Keyword Specific Domain | Outranking trend
Hey everyone, i looked for a similar question but didnt found anything. Ive been having a lot trouble competing with other websites that use the "exact-keyword" domain (www.keyword.com), then they just stuff some mediocre content and rank 1-3 in Google SERP for that keyword I wasnt worried before because i thought they were going to be penalized or decreased in ranking. But they bought several keyword domains and outrank everyone in almost every word. Their conversion rate cant be that good because of the mediocre content, but still i dont like the fact that they rank better just because of the keyword. Any comment on this? , what would you do? Regards

Manage two domains with Webmaster tools
Dear all, I want to create an additional domain in order to: Rank better for a very specific keyword with an exact match domain (I already ask about that, but I did not have my ideas clear at the time); Offer to the user usefull infomation about the topic, without duplicating the content I have in my main domain, just additional and very specific information; Use this domain as landing page, offering a tutorial on "how to" use a specific section of my main domain, including a video tutorial; Link to the related section of my main domain. So, the main idea is, if an user type in google "this specific keyword of ours", they will have in the results "thisspecifickeywordofus.es", they will click and go to the site, where they will find unique and specific information, complementing what I have in my mainsite, and showing how to use my site, so trying to use it for conversion. I want to do only white hat SEO, so first at all, I would like to ask you if you think it is a good idea. The keyword is difficult to rank for, and if I can take advantage of this exact match domain (even if it is nowdays no more so big an advantage), would be great. Second, do you see any problem in managing different domains from the same google account? Newbee question, sorry. Thanks in advance for your help, Daniel

Will aggregating external content hurt my domain's SERP performance?
Hi, We operate a website that helps parents find babysitters. As a small add- on we currently run a small blog with the topic of childcare and parenting. We are now thinking of introducing a new category to our blog called "best articles to read today". The idea is that we "re-blog" selected articles from other blogs that we believe are relevant for our audience. We have obtained the permission from a number of bloggers that we may fully feature their articles on our blog. Our main aim in doing so is to become a destination site for parents. This obviously creates issues with regard to duplicated content. The question I have is: will including this duplicated content on our domain harm our domains general SERP performance? And if so, how can this effect be avoided? It isn't important for us that these "featured" articles rank in SERPs, so we could potentially make them "no index" sites or make the "rel canonical" point to the original author. Any thoughts anyone? Thx! Daan
