Republish An Updated Blog or not?
-
We need to update one of our older posts (a new federal ruling came down that now applies) but do I just update it or should I republish it? I know that just republishing something that hasn't been changed, can get you flagged, but if it's an update, I would think that would be appropriate to republish. I'd just like some guidance before I proceed.
Thanks and Happy Friday!

I spend about 1/3 of my time improving the content on a long-established site. Articles are made current, more substantive, new data, updated graphs , additional Images.
I often see an almost immediate improvement in rankings.
These are not just tweaks to a few sentences. They are major rewrites. An article of 1000 words and three images might get a new introduction that hits topics in the news and two or three new subheadings and two additional images and an updated data table.
Rankings can go up within a couple of weeks.

Thanks Patrick, I appreciate it.

Hi Ruben! And Happy Friday to you, too!
It's never a bad idea to republish or update a blog post. We done it before and not really seen any adverse affects to anything we are doing. Before we went through that process (and before we had a Moz account) we hit the search engines and read articles about how to handle old content or to add to older posts.
As some references and reading enjoyment, take a look at Hubspot's post here "The Complete Guide to Updating and Republishing Outdated Blog Content" and also Entrepreneur.com had a recent article I bookmarked on this subject a couple months ago, "Your Blog's Secret Weapon: Old Content". As many industries change, so will the content, so going back to republish or update an article is a wise decision to keep your content as relevant as possible AND with Google being keen on displaying the best results, your old content won't have a chance if the information isn't accurate to the times.
Hope this was helpful! Cheers - Patrick

Is good for SEO update blog post dates after update post content
Hello I am updating some posts of my Blog, adding new and fresh content and rewriting some of the existing. After doing that I am thinking to update de post publishing so that I appears on front page of the blog and user can read ir again. But I don't know if it is good for google to change the publishing date of the post that he had indexed 5 years ago. Also I don't know if google will read it again if it is old and see the new changes in order to improve it in search results

Google Algo Update
Hi I'm trying to look into how the update in Oct - Nov affected our site. It's positive with us ranking for more keywords, but I wondered if anyone knew what had changed. For example, one of our pages ranked for 291 keywords in October, now it ranks for 406 keywords. We've done nothing to this page in that time. I just want to try and understand what's happening with the algorithm a little more (although I'm sure everyone does :). Does anyone have any insights? Thanks!

Unnamed Update — February 4, 2015
Does anyone have any more information about this shift in the search rankings. For us it seemed to affect few SERPs but those it did impact were highly competitive. I have heard speculation that it had to to with whether your site was mobile friendly or not. I don't believe this to be the case however since it impacted us nagatively and we have been mobile friendly (per google's test) since a year before this update. https://mza.seotoolninja.com/google-algorithm-change Our website has clean backlinks and all original content.

Recent Algorithm Update Impact on Rankings
I've read that the most recent algorithm update by Google is targeting dodgy links. I have a client's website who within the last few days has been smashed out of of top positions for the most competitive keywords (and many others). I'm worried that the site has been penalised, however I can't understand why it would be. The site only has 11 domains linking to it (65 links total) and a lot of these links are coming from the same websites that link to all of our other web clients and none of them have experienced this sudden and significant drop in rankings. Does anyone know if Google is targeting a specific type of site, or how I can determine if my client's website has been penalised? I've not made any significant changes recently to the site's content or meta data, however rankings have remained steady for months now. It just seemed to happen overnight that they dropped off everything (eg. middle of page 2 to page 8 of search results for some of the better keywords) Thank you in advance for any assistance!

Google Penguin update
When Google Penguin update will run again. The last time was in October 2013 and I'm still really curious now. Or have they stopped this and this is now continuously just like the panda?

I know it takes one month to one year for Google to update it but I know many people sitting here at Moz know some secrets for sure.0 -
15% Drop in Traffic. Anyone have theories about the most recent update?
Analyzing our traffic, looks like we were hit site wide, with some article pages that don't have great engagement seeing more damage than others. We've been talking to other sites, and sites that have never seen any penalties and do everything right have also seen about 15-20% drop in traffic. The sites we know that weren't affected are brands (sites you would recognize by name). The only conclusion I can draw from everything (looking at mozcast metrics 'big 10' is that branded websites saw a boost. Does anyone else have any theories about what this most recent update was about?

PageRank Updates Again
Toolbar PageRank updates seem quite frequent this year. When they did the re-update in July after Twitter stuff-up I thought they were going to settle down for a while. Now in August there is a new one. From what I can see the data is refreshed and the snapshot seems to originate from at least 29th July with the calculated values as recent as 25th July. I wonder why they're doing this and what they are up to...
