Hit By Penguin...Wait for recovery or do i change domains?
-
Hey Guys
Would very much appreciate all opinions on our following situation, we have an .uk based ecommerce sports nutrition site www.cardiffsportsnutrition.co.uk
Previously we worked with an SEO, that to put it simply did not follow webmaster guidelines(money anchor heavy, bad links etc), we reached some very good ranks too quickly and subsequently after the first penguin we where hit. We didn't receive any link warning or manual penalties just what i am assuming algorithmic...Rankings and traffic drop significantly, but not business ending.
Since the first penguin we have done very little to no SEO, some unique content, re-writing of product pages, lots of social activity and didnt really lose much traffic after that, some small ups and down after refresh s and a slight slow decline on some keywords. Come Penguin 2.0...things that where still ranking for have now dropped even further, impressions in webmasters is now down over 50% and we have a had a wkly but not drastic drop in traffic since then. Over the last couple of months we have obtained some good quality links, have added lots of great unique content that has been shared significantly and generated some great traffic to our blog, added more unique product pages and category pages. But organically things are starting to look pretty grim apart from our brand keywords and everything is still in a slow decline and no increase in impressions in webmasters either jsut small drops
We have been working to remove the poor quality and toxic links that the previous SEO built, getting anchor text corrected and collating information on the whole process ready to submit a file of links to disavow tool. which we are planning to do within the next couple of wks. Now i have read some successful stories and some not so successful one, so im starting to think of how to deal with this worse case scenario, If our domain is too damaged by the previous SEO guys
We have the same domain name but on the .com that will help us carry over our brand name directly, but my concern is even though we have not had any manual penalty and not 301'd the .com back to the .co.uk or any other form of link will the penalties be carried over to the new domain just on the basis of brand association. We wouldn't plan to redirect any of the .co.uk traffic back to the .com but rather focus on our already strong ablate less converting traffic from the likes of twitter and facebook and run a small PPC campaign for some brand keyword to help buffer the traffic loss. While we focus on building good quality links and putting up plenty of new quality content on the site on the new domain that does not have any poor quality links back to it.
What im trying to avoid is carry on spending time money and effort on the .co.uk domain for the next 3/4 months and continue to lose traffic slowly and then have to switch the domain anyway. I plan to wait and see for the next 4-6wks after we run the dissavow to but October time would be time i would have to make a decision and go for it.
Any advice or opinions would be appreciated

Hi Marc
I hope you don't mind me dropping you a line, but I wondered what you decided to do in the end and whether it was a positive outcome?
We too have suffered an algo penalty and have gone down the link removal/disavow route. We've also invested into redevelopment of the site. But, it doesn't seem to be enough and I'm now looking at the possibility of changing the domain as the next step, if things don't improve in the next couple of months.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Hi Marc,
The fact that you did not receive an unnatural links warning does not mean that you don't have a manual penalty.
Despite comments from Matt Cutts and John Mueller that suggest otherwise, I have personally dealt with almost 100 site owners through rmoov support who never received any communication from Google until we suggested they lodge a reconsideration request because the effect in the SERPS looked like more than algorithmic adjustment to us - sure enough, in each case back came notification of a manual penalty.
I would do as Mark suggested: proceed as though you are dealing with a manual penalty and continue to document all of your link removal activities meticulously, then lodge a reconsideration request. After all, that is the only way you will know for sure whether there is a manual action in effect or not.

Hi Marc,
You've written out a very detailed question, and I think you are in the right direction with the disavow. You already stated how you have spent a significant amount of time on your link cleanup procedure, and have documented a lot of the work you have done and the outreach you've done to try and clean up your backlink profile created by your previous SEO. I would submit this to Google in your reconsideration request after doing the disavow - it can't hurt to submit the reconsideration request. But keep in mind, if you got hit by an algo penalty like Penguin and not manual action, the webspam team won't be able to remove the penalty. Only if the webspam team applied a manual penalty to your site or part of it will the reconsideration request help.
In terms of the disavow, as shared by the webspam team (Matt Cutts, Joh Mueller), take a machete to your problematic backlinks - http://www.seroundtable.com/google-disavow-machete-16844.html. If you find domains that have problematic links on them, instead of trying to disavow each page with probleatic links, use the domain: operator and disavow the whole domain/subdomain. Don't be precise and surgical, but use a machete on those problematic domains and links. Once this has happened, I'd see what happens with the rankings.
In terms of Google carrying over the penalty to your new .com domain due to brand association, I wouldn't worry about this. If you were in fact hit by an algorithmic penalty based on links, if the links remain pointing to the old domain, and you don't give the search engines indications that they should replace the old domain with the new one (301 redirects, change of URL via webmaster tools), there should be no reason the engines would pass over the links and the penalty to the new domain. I don't believe the algorithmic link penalty is based on your brand, but rather on the specific site and that site's backlink profile. So if you do start from scratch and don't 301 redirect to the new domain, you are in effect starting from scratch. You many not rank in the beginning, but that's not because the link penalty transferred over, but your site may not have enough link equity on its own to rank.
Either way, good luck with whichever path you choose - I personally hope the disavow helps you and you can salvage your current site, so you don't have to put all of the hard work and effort you put into your old site in the trash.
Good luck,
Mark

One domain - Multiple servers
Can I have the root domain pointing to one server and other URLs on the domain pointing to another server without redirecting, domain masking or HTML masking? Dealing with an old site that is a mess. I want to avoid migrating the old website to the new environment. I want to work on a page by page and section by section basis, and whatever gets ready to go live I will release on the new server while keeping all other pages untouched and live on the old server. What are your recommendations?

Penguin recovery, no manual action. Are our EMD sites killing our brand site?
Hi guys, Our brand site (http://urban3d.net) has been seeing steady decline due to algorithm updates for the past two years. Our previous SEO company engaged in some black-hat link building which has hurt us very badly. We have recently re-launched the site, with better design, better content, and completed a disavow of hundreds of bad links. The site is technically indexed, but is still nowhere in the SERPs after months of work to recover it by our internal marketing team. The last SEO company also told us to build EMD sites for our core services, which we did: http://3dvisualisation.co.uk/ http://propertybrochure.com/ http://kitchencgi.com/ My question is - could these EMD sites now hurting us even further and stopping our main brand site from ranking? Our plan is to rescue our brand site, with a view to retiring these outlier sites. However, with no progress on the brand site, we can't afford to remove these site (which are ranking). It seems a bit chicken and egg. Any advice would be very much appreciated. Aidan, Urban 3D

Was my site hit by Panda or Penguin? Looking for diagnosis help
My URL is: www.westlakedermatology.com Hello Mozers, I'm looking for some help or guidance as to why my site fell off the "rankings cliff" on 9/5. In the forums I hear a lot of others with a similar issue, and some speculation it is due to a Panda refresh. However, looking at our site we have unique content with each page having over 300-400 words (so it's not light or duplicate content). We get a lot of leads that verbally tell us our content helped answer some of their questions so I'm pretty confident its good for users. Can anyone see an issue with the content on our site? In terms of Penguin, I think our backlink profile is clean, our physicians do take part in providing content to various high quality and relevant websites/blogs. But we do not buy links or do anything in violation of Google's guidelines. In terms of brand, we are the biggest dermatology and plastic surgery group in the Austin area. So any brand implications to search should be on our side. Just looking for some sort of guidance or help, any suggestions would be great! Thanks,

Changing a subdomain to a full domain to rank for a keyword
We have been attempting to get our blogsite to rank for our business name(Instabill). We are now considering changing the url from blog.instabill.com to something like instabillblog.com. I have following concerns about the change; Will changing the domain really be that helpful (i.e. will the change get our blog on page one for the term instabill) We have over 350 pages of content on our blog. Will changing the domain have possible negative effects ( I was thinking of using url updater in webmaster tools and creating a permanent 301 redirect from the older url to the new) Having never changed a url for a site with this much content and seo value for my company I would like to know the following from someone who has made mistakes here before; what not to do what steps you would take to make the transition easier Any help here will be greatly appreciated. cheers, Instabill

Noindex, Nofollow to previous domain
Hi, My programmer recently did a horrible mistkae by adding noindex, nofollow to our website without me noticing for two days. At the same time he did it we bought a new domain and redirected the old domain to the new domain: The Old domain is: http://www.websitebuildersworld.com and the new one is: http://www.websiteplanet.com Now unfortunatly I didn't notice the noindex, nofollow when it was on the old domain and I redirected it to websiteplanet.com before I fixed the noindex, nofollow. I fixed the problem around 10 hours ago on the new domain (www.websiteplanet.com) but the old domain didn't get indexed back (yet), so for example if you search for WebsiteBuildersWorld in google you will not reach the homepage as google deleted it because of the noindex, nofollow. My question is:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Ouzan
Do you think that it will be fixed and google will retrieve websitebuildersworld homepage to his search results and then redirect it to websiteplanet? Or because I redirected websitebuildersworld.com to websiteplanet.com before letting google crawling websitebuildersworld.com without the noindex,no follow it wouldn't get indexed again? I hope I explained the problem good enough. Looking forward for your valuable replies. Thanks.0 -
This site got hit but why..?
I am currently looking at taking on a small project website which was recently hit but we are really at a loss as to why so I wanted to open this up to the floor and see if anyone else had some thoughts or theories to add. The site is Howtotradecommodities.co.uk and the site appeared to be hit by Penguin because sure enough it drops from several hundred visitors a day to less than 50. Nothing was changed about the website, and looking at the Analytics it bumbled along at a less than 50 visitors a day. On June 25th when Panda 3.8 hit, the site saw traffic increase to between 80-100 visitors a day and steadily increases almost to pre-penguin levels. On August 9th/10th, traffic drops off the face of the planet once again. This site has some amazing links http://techcrunch.com/2012/02/04/algorithmsdata-vs-analystsreports-fight/

http://as.exeter.ac.uk/library/using/help/business/researchingfinance/stockmarket/ That were earned entirely naturally/editorially. I know these aren't "get out of jail free cards" but the rest of the profile isn't that bad either. Normally you can look at a link profile and say "Yep, this link and that link are a bit questionable" but beyond some slightly off-topic guest blogging done a while back before I was looking to get involved in the project there really isn't anything all that fruity about the links in my opinion. I know that the site design needs some work but the content is of a high standard and it covers its topic (commodities) in a very comprehensive and authoritative way. In my opinion, (I'm not biased yet because it isn't my site) this site genuinely deserves to rank. As far as I know, this site has received no unnatural link warnings. I am hoping this is just a case of us having looked at this for too long and it will be a couple of obvious/glaring fixes to someone with a fresh pair of eyes. Does anyone have any insights into what the solution might be? [UPDATE] after responses from a few folks I decided to update the thread with progress I made on investigating the situation. After plugging the domain into Open Site Explorer I can see quite a few links that didn't show up in Link Research Tools (which is odd as I thought LRT was powered by mozscape but anyway... shows the need for multiple tools). It does seem like someone in the past has been a little trigger happy with building links to some of the inner pages.0 -
Consolidate 150 domains to 1
Hi! Just as the questions tell we are looking at a project where we might have to consolidate 150 different domains into 1 (of course with a corresponding page on the new domain). We aim at preserving as much of the linkjuice as possible from each domain. Any advice on doing this propely? I, of course, see a risk of opening the new domain and just redirecting (301) the old domains to the specific page on the new domain but is there any right or wrong way of doing this? I might add that each domain has a more or less unique linkprofiles in terms om linking domains, number of linking domains and such. Our dear friend Cutts has some information on this topic, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7M22teF3Ho but he only talks about 4 domains - which of course seem like a bit more natural occurring phenomenon. But what about 150 of them? Anyone got any advice? Is this as much of a no-go that I feel it is? Thanks! Edit: There domains are all owned by the same entitiy, share the same GWT and such.
