Find all affiliate links in a custom CMS
-
I have a custom CMS. I offer a few affiliate products through my site. Now I need to update all my aff. links and I'm not sure how I can find all the pages (posts) on my site that have affiliate links. What's the best way to do that?
-
.htaccess processes requests received by your webserver. It doesn't process HTML sent to the client, so it can't affect those affiliate links.
-
Hey,
As Jane mentioned - .htaccess can't change the HTML content of your pages, so you can't replace all the links that would be seen by a user or a browser.
If the links are via a redirection page on your site then you can use .htaccess to redirect those requests elsewhere, so when a user clicks a link it takes them somewhere else instead, but only if those pages are on your site.
Make sense?
Good luck!

Hi Vince,
.htaccess can't change the HTML of the webpage, but I am not sure if it can rewrite outbound clicks. I'll reach out to other other contributors to see if anyone has a shortcut way of updating these links. I am seeing it mentioned online that you can do this, but I would like some verification from the team.
Cheers,
Jane

Afraid I can't help you with that one. Sorry!

Thanks guys, that makes sense. I'm doing what you suggested now. Once I find all my pages with affiliate links, is it possible to use .htaccess so that it requites those links automatically? Basically, it should go to a specific page, find the link I define, and change it to a new one. Is that even possible with .htaccess?

I would agree with Andy. Screaming Frog SEO Spider is a good tool for this. Just check all the "In Links" from the external urls you need to find on your site.

Probably the best way to track down all the pages, would be to use Screaming Frog Spider. Put in the URL and leave it to go.
The free version crawls up to 500 pages with the paid version being unlimited.

Affiliate links and parameters creating duplicate page titles
Hi, we have an affiliate system and use rel=**canonical **to canonicalise them to the right link. Still, we see those links creating duplicate page titles, in Moz crawl and in Google search console. How are we supposed to treat those links so they do not create duplicate content? Thanks for your help!

Set up affiliates
Hi Mozzers, As a response to Rand's recent (ish!) whiteboad Friday (http://moz.com/blog/my-customers-wont-amplify-my-content-whiteboard-friday) where he talked about how many verticals will never gain much in the way of links because they aren't fun or exciting products/brands. I think my sites fall into this - we sell mortgages! Not the most exciting or sexy of products, but try buying a house without one! With this in mind, I am looking at building an extensive PR campaign, but this will take a fair bit of time to get going. In the meantime, my boss has asked me to find some paid link opportunities. I've been trawling through our main competitor's backlinks like a demon (so much trash in there though, why hasn't Google noticed it yet??) and one of our main competitors looks like they are running an affiliate scheme. I have absolutely no experience in this area. None. Zip. Nothing. I want to change this! And get some good relevant (converting) traffic to my site. I personally think this would be more beneficial than buying links (my boss understands that any paid links I get will have to have nofollow and therefore would be built for traffic) because we'd only pay when we made a sale - right? I think this is the way it works? Anyway, I wanted to know how to become an affiliate? Sorry if I've got the terminology wrong here - like I said before I have zero experience in this. Please can someone point me in the right direction? I've found a few companies that appear to act as the middleman but I have no idea of what is good and what isn't in this area. Steep learning curve for me.... Any knowledge you wish to share with me on this would be greatly appreciated! Thank you 🙂

What is the negative effect of getting affiliate links to your domain?
Are the negative effects of affiliate links to your domain bigger than the positive effects? Is it better to use a subdomain for your affiliate campaigns? (Because of linkprofile no follow links or time on page effects?) Thanks for responce!

Looking for a nice way to add an amazon affiliate store to my site
We are often asked what our favorite toys, books, resources, etc, are and I want to make a page(s) with our top resources that is a nice clean amazon affiliate store. Are there are good resources anyone knows of to do this? (I'm using a wordpress blog by the way....perhaps there is a plug in?) Thanks.

Will giving a blogger an affiliate url to my site reduce her links' seo value to me?
If a blogger were to write a post about one of my products and link to my product page, would giving her an affiliate url to link to rather than the normal link spoil the seo value of the link? So instead of mysite.com/product-one it would be mysite.com/affiliate/blogger/product-one Google would think... this is a transaction not a vote of confidence?

Two Tier Internet, Bad Blogs and One page Affiliate Sites
Hi, I start a post on a popular internet marketing forum about how bad blogs - (i.e. the ones with one posts of over optimise spun garbage) - and the one page affiliate sites - trying to sell you something... (you know the ones) - were REALLY starting to annoy me and if/when something would be done by ISP's or Anyone really. Obviously google is aware of the issue with trying to push Google Plus to crowd source better search results. But with more and more sites popping up telling people how they can make money from having a niche website/page with adwords on it aren't we fast moving to a two tier internet.... How websites/pages exist purely to game search engines.... and will they ever disappear.... Sorry mini rant..... might even get some ideas for a blog post 😛 (not on a bad blog before anyone says anything)

Gaining juice from affiliate links
Afternoon Mozzers, We run a basic affiliate program whereby we distribute banners and tools to affiliate sites who then link back to our homepage via these, often through a tool that incorporates an HTML link with our primary keyword term embedded. This banner/tool/link heads to our homepage, and will then incorporate that particular affiliate's unique code in the URL, eg. www.example.com/1A-265-GNH Seems pretty standard practice so far? So, considering this, that we include our primary keyword term in HTML in some banners, some also link to our homepage via an embedded image (and others then just work off cookies as per usual), can anyone hazard a guess, or know for certain, the beneficence of this as a link building means? I ask in terms of trying to determine whether to continue punting our tools and banners as a decent link building opportunity, or concentrate more on other link building means. Hope I've been clear enough, but am happy to elaborate if need be. Cheers
