Google's form for "Small sites that should rank better" | Any experiences or results?
-
Back in August of 2013 Google created a form that allowed people to submit small websites that "should be ranking better in Google".
There is more info about it in this article http://www.seroundtable.com/google-small-site-survey-17295.html
Has anybody used it? Any experiences or results you can share?

I personally get phone calls/emails claiming to be Google and to "confirm" business information for rankings. [...] Likewise, if they receive a call/email from "Google" and choose not to respond because they are used to spammers, they would be unfairly dropped lower in rankings even if they have great CS.
I get calls like this all of the time. They make me angry because I believe that they are spammers calling. But could they be from Google?
** If there was an official setup like that, the two could get confused and people taken advantage of.**
Yes, how can Google discover who takes care of their customers and who does not? The small company selling nationally often can't afford the feedback and ratings systems that google can monitor, or support for their website and Google Plus.
I can't put myself out there to do tech support for all of the third party sellers on Amazon, WalMart, Sears, ebay and dozens of other big brand sites that sell my product.

Very solid idea - track email response times, phone call wait times, etc. But I think it would be very hard to implement while preventing spammers.
Phone numbers and email addresses can be spoofed with ease. I personally get phone calls/emails claiming to be Google and to "confirm" business information for rankings. If there was an official setup like that, the two could get confused and people taken advantage of.
Likewise, if they receive a call/email from "Google" and choose not to respond because they are used to spammers, they would be unfairly dropped lower in rankings even if they have great CS.
But I'm with you... Google definitely needs to give small businesses a fighting chance against the big boys. Just needs to be extremely well thought out.

Maybe Google should invent a robot that calls or sends a question to customer service?.
-
To be fair, they were clear they wouldn't just boost rankings just because you submitted a page.
They would instead look at all the sites that were submitted, look for patterns on what makes them great and try to develop an algo tweak that would help similar sites rank.
Could you imagine if they form actually functioned as a "submit good site > site gets better rankings"... they would drown in requests.

No Results!
Google loves brands.
You can have more content than all of your competitors combined, greater selection than anyone, have intelligent people who answer the phone and give free advice, respond immediately to email enquiries with generous advice......
A third party seller on a big brand website posts one crappy page with one low-quality item that is such a piece of trash that we refuse to sell it and they are above you in the SERPs...
Then the customer who bought that piece of crap from the third party seller on the big brand website (who offer zero support - you can't even find a phone number or an email on their site or in their packaging) are calling and emailing us wanting to know why they can't get that piece of crap to work... and ask us to send them a replacement!... and then get pissed because we tell them to "contact the vendor where you purchased it".

Hi Egol ...so does that mean "no results" ...or does it mean you can't share?

Local SEO: Is an equivalent of "practitioner listings" allowed for tradesmen, such as plumbers - in GMB (Google My Business)
I note practitioner listings are in place for certain professionals, so you can list your business address and then your individual name - one under a "practice listing" - the other under a "practitioner listing". As detailed here: https://whitespark.ca/blog/best-practices-for-practitioner-listings-on-google-my-business-gmb/ But can a self-employed tradesman do the same - for example a carpenter may have their workshop and be available for onsite work, so can they list their "carpentry business/brand name" and then their "personal name" they are also known by? Even if it is the same address.

Can a move to a new domain (with 301's) shake off a google algorithm penalty
we have done everything under the sun using the holy grail of google guidelines to get our site back onto page 1 for our domain. we have recovered (penguin and panda) algorithm filters for keywords that were page 1 going to page 7 and now page 2. its been 2 years and we cant hit page 1 again. this is our final phase we cna think of.. do you thin kit will work if we move to a new domain. and how much traffic/rankings can we expect to lose in the short-term?

404's - Do they impact search ranking/how do we get rid of them?
Hi, We recently ran the Moz website crawl report and saw a number of 404 pages from our site come back. These were returned as "high priority" issues to fix. My question is, how do 404's impact search ranking? From what Google support tells me, 404's are "normal" and not a big deal to fix, but if they are "high priority" shouldn't we be doing something to remove them? Also, if I do want to remove the pages, how would I go about doing so? Is it enough to go into Webmaster tools and list it as a link no to crawl anymore or do we need to do work from the website development side as well? Here are a couple of examples that came back..these are articles that were previously posted but we decided to close out: http://loyalty360.org/loyalty-management/september-2011/let-me-guessyour-loyalty-program-isnt-working http://loyalty360.org/resources/article/mark-johnson-speaks-at-motivation-show Thanks!

No matter what I do, my website isn't showing up in search results. What's happening?
I've checked for meta-robots, all SEO tags are fixed, reindexed with google-- basically everything and it's not showing up. According to SEOMoz all looks fine, I am making a few fixes, but nothing terribly major. It's a new website, and i know it takes a while, but there is no movement here in a month. Any insights here?

Refocusing a site's conent
Here's a question I was asked recently, and I can really see going either way, but want to double check my preference. The site has been around for years and over that time expanded it's content to a variety of areas that are not really core to it's mission, income or themed content. These jettisonable other areas have a fair amount of built up authority but don't really contribute anything to the site's bottom line. The site is considering what to do with these off-theme pages and the two options seem to be: Leave them in place, but make them hard to find for users, thus preserving their authority as an inlink to other core pages. or... Just move on and 301 the pages to whatever is half-way relevant. The 301 the pages camp seems to believe that making the site's existing/remaining content focused on three or four narrower areas will have benefits for what Google sees the site as being about. So, instead of being about 12 different things that aren't too related to each other, the site will be about 3 or 4 things that are kinda related to eachother. Personally, I'm not eager to let go of old pages because they do produce some traffic and have some authority value to help the core pages via in-context and navigation links. On the other hand, maybe focusing more would have benefits search benefits. What do think? Best... Darcy

About to launch a new e-commerce site need help with anchor text's
Hey guys, I need some advice regarding the keywords I want to target for a new website. The website is e-commerce and is about 60% done but i wanted some advice. home page - http://www.diamondengagement.com/ For link building purposes I only want to target the domain name for the anchor text "diamond engagement" and "diamondengagement.com" for internal pages like .... http://www.diamondengagement.com/engagement-rings/ I want this page to rank for "engagement rings" but that's a very competitive keyword. I was thinking for the first 3 or 4 months I only build links to this page with the domain name again "diamond engagement" and phrase anchor text's using "diamond engagement" than just out right building "engagement rings" or "engagement ring" to start off. What are your thoughts??
