Blog for content
-
Noob here so be gentle...
We have a blog on our homepage that we're using for content/SEO purposes. Does this content rank as highly as it would if it were a simple HTML page as opposed to a blogspot or wordpress from our page? In other words, are we getting as much content cred in this way as we would if blogspot wasn't affiliated?

Hi there,
To reiterate some things that have been said here:
You want to remove / move away from Blogspot and Wordpress blogs that are hosted on .blogspot.com / .wordpress.com. Very few people would ever recommend using Blogspot even for a self-hosted blog - Wordpress is very much superior. Using a Blogspot domain does not give you a boost in Google's rankings, so do not worry about losing out because of that.
You also want to remove the duplicate content problem - as is linked to above, Google dislikes duplicate content and will filter out one "version" of the identical content. A query like this one shows that Google has indexed the content on your blogspot blog - if you click to see additional results in that results page, you will see that the way the blogspot blog is set up is absolutely terrible when it comes to duplicate content as well. Google has found 101 versions of the same sentence. The content appears to be drawn into the URL dynamically - the actual text of the post is not visible in the source code of the page, but the entire blog appears to be readable from any blog post URL - all you have to do is scroll up and down.
You really need to remove this blogspot blog and work solely on your own site, but if this blog is currently bringing you traffic, then this is going to be tough. Blogspot does not have a native method for 301 redirecting an old blog to a new location. There are a range of options for redirecting visitors at a page level, but I am relatively sure that there is no server-level redirect option yet.

As Richard mentioned "You want any links that your content builds to be directed to your website".
I would use <cite class="_sd">http://sites.google.com // blogspot.com //</cite> wordpress.com // tumblr.com etc. only as satellites.
-
This just could be because your blog post is better optimized for that search term as opposed to your product page. Ideally that same blog post on on your website blog would hold that position in the SERP, instead of on blogspot.
-
So...one of the reasons we put our blog into blogspot is it's a Google joint which, I'm assuming, gives those blogs an edge over blogs in Wordpress or Flickr (for example) or over a page generated entirely by us. Part of the reason I feel this way is our blogs often get better positioning than content/product pages. For example: if you were to Google "best flooring for over carpet", our blog, not our product page, is sitting at the top of Page 1.

I agree with Richard, I would look at having my content hub (blog) on my own domain, helping to enhance the site as an information resource and directly benefiting from any links that it earns with the posts that you create.Lots of interlinking between your site and your separate blog on blogspot or wordpress.com isn't great either.

Hello,
Have to agree with Richard on this one. You definitely want to have the blog contained within your site, which it looks like you are already doing @ http://www.greatmats.com/blog/. This way links to your content give your site increased authority/juice instead of giving the host site, in this case blogspot.com, any additional authority.
One important thing to note, it looks like you are posting the same content on your site blog that you are posting on your blogspot blog. Google tends to frown upon duplicate content, so you may want to stop using one blog or post different articles on each blog.
-
My first thoughts are, I would not suggest posting to a.blogspot.com or .wordpress. You want any links that your content builds to be directed to your website, so it's important that you put your best content on your website and not on something else.

Where to promote a blog post?
I want to promote a blog post with the littlest invested time. It's not something I need to get ranked high. Just wondering what is the most efficient method or service to broadcast it out there with at least some chance of driving some traffic (other than "just let Google index it") 😉

Duplicate content on the same site
We have a client who wants us to use the same piece of copy twice on their website. Once to promote a workshop and once to promote a conference talk. We feel this would be bad practice from a user perspective, but we were wondering how search engines would regard this? Thanks Ian

Should a business blog be on a separate site or on the ecommerce site itself?
Hey there. I'm a new Pro member and this will be my first question on the Q&A. Thanks in advance for your responses. I'm the owner of an ecommerce site that sells custom candles. www.prometheancandle.com in case anyone wants to take a peak. I've become somewhat of an expert on all-things-candles over the past 4 years and I am thinking about starting a candle related blog. My question is this. Should I build this blog on the ecommerce site itself, say @ www.prometheancandle.com/blog.php, or should I devote a separate site to answering candle related question, history of candles, etc? At first, I was thinking that the blog should remain on the ecommerce site so readers would have easy access to the shop to be able to purchase products. But then it occurred to me that people who may be interested in reading up on candle history, candle making, meditation & candles, etc., may not want to go to an obviously ecommerce site to do that. I know Google values informational sites more than ecommerce sites (at least I think they do), so that encourages me to lean towards the separate site. Well, I may have just answered this question myself, but I'd definitely be interested to hear feedback and opinions. Thanks so much guys and I look forward to hearing from you.

I started a Wordpress blog, google indexed it...
How long before I can see those links show up in SEO Moz for my website? What elements is SEO Moz looking for before they add the wordpress site to my linking domains report? Regards, Jeff

Duplicate content problem
Hi, i have a serious problem. I work in joomla and sometimes it can be annoying. When you set up a category, you need to give it a name and maybe this is a huge error on my part as i did not really think about the names beforehand. The situation i have now is, all my sections are in front page mode, but because you have to name the categories in order to write articles, i am now left with a load of blog sections such as http://www.in2town.co.uk/benidorm/benidorm-news Now i have a main section called Benidorm news so i have duplicate sections, i want to know if i can redirect the http://www.in2town.co.uk/benidorm/benidorm-news to go to the main benidorm section or if there is a better way of doing it. i have left this blod layout the way it is to show you, but the others i just have it where it shows the title and then goes to the article. I work in k2 and would be grateful if anyone can let me know the solution to this as semoz is showing that i have many duplicate titles and content many thanks

My Blog pages are out ranking my main website
My blog was on wordpress.com for over 18mnths and I have just moved it to my domain - rankings are charging as a result - up and down! My current concern is my google.co.uk search position for garden art - my home page http://www.gardenbeet.com has been number 2 for over 12 mnths - now my blog is number 2 http://www.gardenbeet.com/garden_design_blog/garden-art/ this is not the best landing page to generate sales from my shop - any suggestions?
