Low value link building to sitemap.xml
-
During some competitive research recently I discovered one of my clients competitors sites had an interesting backlink profile.
Looking at the top-pages report in Open Site Explorer the home page was the #1 page (as you'd expect) with 2.5k links from about 500 linking root domains
The second page was the sitemap.xml (~1.5k links, 400 linking root domains) and the third was their /feed page (again, ~1.5k links, 350 linking root domains).
Links to these two pages aren't something that would happen naturally (particularly the sitemap.xml).
There's a whole load of evidence for nasty low quality link building such as over-optimised keyword rich anchor text, comment spam, and even some blog/article based link networks.
It's a pretty nasty niche with lots of cut-throat affiliate marketing.
My guess here is that someone may have made a mistake using an automated link building too, but I'd be interested in what you might think? Have you seen this before?
(Sorry, I can't reveal the domains in question as I'm bound by an NDA.)
-
Thanks Matt, Andy,
Looking at how they've had automated link building done to every page on their domain it does look like it's automated link building gone wrong.
You don't normally see so many boring product pages getting as many links as they have!
It wouldn't surprise me if were trying to supply the sitemap.xml or rss feed as a list of target URLs to build links to and ended up building links directly to these.
-
Hi Doug,
I have never seen this done before and as both you and Andy say I can't imagine that it has been done on purpose - more automated link building.
-
Hey Doug,
Never seen that myself before and can only imagine it is either a mistake, or someone has been misinformed that there is some benefit to this.
Like you said, these aren't links that would appear naturally, so something odd has certainly happened.

Before I request hundreds of links for "nofollow" I want to verify I'm doing the right thing
Happy Thanksgiving Mozers, In my efforts to get rid of a Google penalty, I've come to the conclusion that all the travel agents who link to our site with a unique code, are technically affiliates because they get commission. Therefore we need to get all of them to switch their links to "rel=nofollow". I'm worried this shift will cost us in search rankings, especially since none of our competitors require nofollow tags. So before I actually begin requiring the switch, I wanted to just double check that I'm not misinterpreting Google. Our travel agents are paid commission on every sale (whether their customers click the link from their website to ours, or calls in and gives us that agent's code. So even though our travel agents aren't technically part of an "affiliate program" run through CJ or anything, they are in Google's eyes affiliates of my company. Therefore their links with their personal codes all need to be nofollow. Am I correct on this? I can't find anywhere where Google goes into great depth explaining various types of affiliates.

'legitimate' link wheels
I was wondering what SEOMoz' thoughts are on the mega legitimate link wheel sites that are out there. TechMediaNet have been buying up massive news/media sites which arent really monetised (adsense) like http://www.space.com/ http://www.ouramazingplanet.com/ livescience.com and others and generating, admittedly good quality, curated content. Then seeding them with content with backlinks to their money site, toptenreviews.com which in essence is a review site with thousands of pages loaded with affiliate links no better than any of the other site out there. e.g. http://www.livescience.com/9755-bing.html due to the scale of what they're doing pretty much any keyword search i do with review in it (the last thing i wanted to purchase was a usb 3 hub) ends up with toptenreviews.com dominating the serps presumably due to the high PR the viral nature of the media sites are working with. Do you think Google will crack down on this, or do you think it's capitalism in action? TechMediaNet have invested millions in this project and just gotten another $33 million in funding recently.....

Amazon Links destroyed my rankings, I removed them, will my site recover?
Hello, Last week I got the glorious idea to put amazon affiliate links on my website. I didn't put a rel=nofollow on them or deindex the pages they were on. Precisely I put some reviews and 10 different amazon links on one page and I put that into my navigation so all inner pages were linking to that page. When Google crawled my page again, I had a 60% traffic drop. 3 days later when I found out what caused this (amazon links) I completely removed the site containing those links and removed all links to that page from my site. Now my rankings are still down, will my site recover from this or is it lost? And how long would you think it'll take?

Sponsored Links on Amazon, help
So from what I can see CLickrive was discontinued by Amazon, replaced by a9. I have been asked by a client how they can get onto Sponsored Links near the bottom of a search query on an amazon page. Now I can see from the amazon associates site that you can put widgets, display ads, product search links etc but there is no mention of 'Sponsored Links' other than: SPONSORED LINKS Sponsored links are advertisements related to your recent product search query or content on the page. Sponsored links are always clearly labeled. When you click on a sponsored link, we get revenue. Generating additional revenue from sponsored links allows Amazon.com to offer lower prices to you - something we are dedicated to doing in every way we can. There is no mention on how to actually be a sponsored link... I have read on various blogs etc that it is delivered by a third party network... no mention as to whom... thought Google but no mention of this on any information I can find on Google blogs etc. Anyone have an idea? Thank you 🙂

How many affiliate links is considered too many?
Hi, Let's say you have great reviews for 50 products and some of these products do have affiliate links on review pages. And then you have user scores and you come up with a top 20 product list sorted by user scores. Now if you have the list of top 20 products on one page and all these products have an affiliate link (with nofollow relation and a 301 redirect) on the same page with only a couple of images and a summary of the review linked to the review pages, would this still be considered as what Google calls a "bridge page"? Would it be better to still generate the top 20 list but rather link to review pages only? (to avoid too many affiliate links on one single page).

Link juice from my affiliates to my site
I'm setting up an affiliate program through 1shoppingcart. Even though I run 3 different websites, the way their program works is that I have to have 1 domain name that my affiliates get as their affiliate link, with their unique id attached at the end. I can give them multiple links that will redirect to various places on my 3 websites, but those original links that they put on their site will all be to just 1 domain. I'm wondering if I still get link juice to my sites even though the links are obviously being redirected? Does it depend on the redirection method? I was just thinking that getting hundreds of affiliates who run related sites could be a very good seo boost if they're all linking to my site, but I feel like it's going to be wasted because of this redirection thing. Hope this made sense. Thanks very much,

Affilate links - Google Panda 2.1
With the recent update from Google Panda would links from affiliate Coupon Sites now have an negative impact in Organic Rankings or site value? A reason for this question is because many Coupon Sites usually have poor content and a poor quality score. Thanks
