For a URL, is it better to have Keyword +City?
-
I am working on some landing pages and trying to do well in Local areas.
Is it better to have my landing pages set as mysite.com/keyword+location or mysite.com/Location+keyword. or does it even matter anymore?
So for a plumber selling water heater services. is it better to be:
site/hot-water-heaters-jacksonville-fl or site/jacksonville-fl-hot-water-heaters?
I normally do keyword+city.

Hi Dave,
Unfortunately, I find Google's KP tool to be next to useless unless the client is in a really major city. Basically, we're back to the old advice of researching keywords and adding geography through common sense. If anyone has a different take on this, please let me know, but local keyword research has never been very satisfactory and Google seems to return zeros or unbelievably low numbers for most US towns.
-
Yes. It seems in this instance there's not a big difference, if any difference at all, between search volumes for "Jacksonville water heaters" and "water heaters Jacksonville". And as vzPro points out, with Hummingbird, Google will find you anyway.
-
Hi Donna,
Taking your example:
" plugging "water heaters Jacksonville" turned up 0 searches a month. Plugging in "water heaters" and then targeting Jacksonville FL only turned up 40 searches a month."
Would you not still craft your page to be url/water-heaters-jacksonville and also your title tag to be water heaters jacksonville?
-
I agree with VzPro, it's at least an indication.
I also do things like search for "keyword+location" and then just "keyword", but using the targeting and location options on the left to select Jacksonville FL only (vs the entire US).
So in your example, plugging "water heaters Jacksonville" turned up 0 searches a month. Plugging in "water heaters" and then targeting Jacksonville FL only turned up 40 searches a month.
-
It depends on how you use it. Even if the numbers are 10 to 12 that can still be an indication. I generally try to stick to larger areas for search. If you look in Mayport you will probably only show a few searches. Remember, these are showing actual searches from those exact locations. My assumption (purely an assumption) that these smaller volume searches get "lumped together" with other search queries. Ie. Plumber Jacksonville, plumbers Jacksonville, Jacksonville plumbers, etc.
If you are doing landing pages per area, I find the keyword planner very helpful for improving my QA score in AdWords.
-
Do you guys actually find keyword planner useful? I find for 99% of the things i look at on a local level the volume is either blank or so low it doesn't really mater. Like 10 vs 12 a month.
-
I agree with Donna's take. I have a dozen or so plumber and ac repair clients and that has been a constant struggle to talk to owners about. They see a competitor ranking for ac repair Jacksonville FL but our page is /air-conditioning-repair-jacksonville. I also use the keyword planner to help decide this. What I do is search for "hot water heaters" and localize the setting to your search area and get the recommendations there. Let's say there are 150 searches for the FL version of a search and 60 for the non FL version. I'll generally check to see the competition level of each search. If one is medium and the other is high, I'll usually take the medium competition one and shoot to rank for that one. Wven if it has the lower search volume. This also works if you are setting up AdWords campaigns for these pages. I would try to mix up the h2 tags with the non primary version too. That has worked for us in organic results.
All that being said, the Hummingbird algo is meant to help googlebots understand long tail searches like this and is trying to make the difference between keywords + city and city + keyword a mute point. If you just do a regular search you'll see the SERP displaying both results.

Hi Dave,
I think the sequencing of words in the URL is less important than the sequencing of words in the title tag. That said, if I were you I'd look up "keyword+location" and "location+keyword" in Google Planner and make my choice based on what I learn there. Which version gets the most searches? Which is harder to rank for? And which looks like it might have the better commercial value?
The length of the URL is going to be the same either way, so err on the side of the sequencing that best fits your overall ranking objectives.

Subfolder or Geo URLs?
Hi Guys, Context: I am working with a plumbing companies that have a corporate side and a franchise side. We got 2 franchises on board. The corporate is not working with us though. Some of these franchises don't even have a website. Because they are local plumbers(franchises) covering generally at least 2 cities, local SEO will be the primary tactic to pursue. So before getting into that, I have to purchase domain names that are already not taken(different from corporate), therefore slightly different from corporate name but not completely to keep the advantage of the brand name. My first problem: should I include a geo kw rich URL or not? To me I personally believe that creating a domain name without geo can be better in the sense that I will be able to create different subfolders for all the different locations that each franchises covers. Also, I am not sure also if google likes those geo urls? If you guys would recommend Geo kw rich urls, wouldn't be a good idea to get multiple domains that would link at each other for each of the locations they cover or would it be a bad idea? in long term SEO Who wins the battle? www.example.com/cityname www.examplecityname.com Thanks Mozzers!

.png vs .jpg - Which ranks better or does it matter?
Hi Moz community, I am working on a SEO project (ecommerce) and most of the images on the website are .png and I notice they do not rank but yet the .jpg do. Do you recommend I change all the .png to .jpg? They all have alt text and keyword filenames (no spam 🙂 Here is the website www.moldear.com.ar. Notice the swimming pool coping tiles are .png and the swimming pool images are .jpg. I cannot get the coping images to rank for some reason Thanks Carla

For Local SEO on a business with many locations, should the city be included in the business name?
For a franchised business with ~50 locations spread across the US, should the city be included in the business name when building citations? Fictional example: We have a staffing franchise called 'Hamilton Staffing'. They have 50 locations in the US. They are all called 'Hamilton Staffing'. We need to finalize the correct NAP information so we are consistent in building citations. For the name, should we just use 'Hamilton Staffing' for all of them? Or should we use 'Hamilton Staffing - Chicago' and the like for other locations? It looks like InfoUSA and Axciom are just using 'Hamilton Staffing', whereas Google is using 'Hamilton Staffing Chicago' and the like. Thoughts on this?

City/Town content pages for a local business
Earlier this month I asked a private question on the use of schema for service area pages on a home improvement contractors website. The question led to Miriam Ellis giving me some great ideas about creating content for pages specific to the clients service area. The goal here would be to rank for [roofing contractor + city] using a URL similar to: mycompany.com/service-areas/city-state A great idea Miriam gave me for creating content for these pages: Showcasing a previous project in that city/town with a well-written project description, photos, videos and client testimonials. Her advice is excellent and I wanted to share it with you. I also wanted to open up the discussion and see what others have had success with. If the company is relatively new, and doesn’t have the work history to create pages such as this, what would you do?

URL redirect to a YouTube Channel?
Hey all, We recently ran a video content contest on a micro site and we generated some links for the URL. In December we are planning on doing a redirect of the domain to our YouTube channel where all of the videos hosted. My question is how much SEO benefit will there be by redirecting to our YouTube channel vs redirecting to a single video from the contest. Does the strength of the channel as whole affect the videos in that channels ability to rank on YouTube and in SERPs? The other option is to just redirect the URL to our product page on our main website, but to me that doesn't seem like it would provide the best user experience 🙂 If anyone has experience with this kind of an issue I'd appreciate your feedback. Thanks!
