Low KDS but high DA for all page 1 sites
-
Hi there
A KDS report question...
My client has a keyword with a low KDS (garden hose - 28). Intuitively this seemed too low, and when I checked what ranks, it is all high quality brand sites with high DAs. Admittedly the specific pages ranking have low PAs, but I can't see my client ever being able to compete with these big boys right now.
How come the KDS is so low? This seems just wrong as the metric implies it is a good keyword to target - I know there are always lots of other things to check, but this does make me less confident with KDS reporting
Anyone got any thoughts on this?
Many thanks

Yes!

If you only just today learned that, you're much more of a recluse than I thought!

Chammi,
My ex and I ran into some 'friends' and she and the lady had at one time been quite good friends. The lady was pregnant when we last saw them and as we walked up to a table where they were seated, my ex says rather exuberantly , "How are you? When is the baby due?" To which, her friend replied, "4 months ago."
There really is no where to go from there... I just smiled and said, "Hey Jack, how's the golf game these days?"PS - Chammy, if you can tell that story on here so easily, you are a Mozzer.
Welcome

EGOL
You never cease to impress me with your understanding of not just SEO, but of marketing. Honestly, you are a jewel.
There is a truly great business book "Blue Ocean Strategy," that many who make their living on the Internet should read, and I know some of you have. The Internet provides the greatest ease of entry into a "Blue Ocean" versus any other "marketplace." At the same time the big box retailers and aggregators use the Internet too. If you have a $100K budget you don't stand a lot of chance if you are going to operate in the same arena as Amazon, Lowe's, Sears, etc. You have to be different and most do not understand that different does not mean that you believe your product/service is better or your staff nicer. It means different. It means fishing in waters where no one else has a boat. For hoses, think about the first collapsible hose that was sold; I would have loved to been the marketing agent for that product.
Great comments all.

Hi there - thanks for your responses.
Robert - sorry, got my terminology wrong, I meant Moz's KWD tool (not KDS). Too may TLAs around! And I guess that's why I am unclear, as they are all Moz metrics but seem at odds with each other. So wondered whether I was missing something or whether the KWD metric needs to be taken with a pinch of salt.
The content is not good for the hoses, My client is taking some persuasion, and I was going to show him the KWD metric but it kinda says the opposite of what I am trying to tell him as makes it seem a good term to target. I'll just stick with showing him the returns. And get him to focus elsewhere as he won't want to do what is necessary!
EGOL - yes, I agree! I'll just need to work harder to convince him that being on page 1 for the term garden hose is not the be all and end all for him. We have other better directions we can go. I initially got quite excited at KWD 28 (this is the UK) but alas, not to be! I guess that is the danger of looking at any metric in isolation.
Keri - hmmm, I got the opposite once. I was asked when my baby was due to which I hissed 'I am not pregnant' - I felt quite sorry for the sales assistant as they were horrified !

I've walked in to Sears and asked where the maternity section was. Even mimed a huge belly. Clerk didn't understand what I was talking about. Thankfully, most employees are a bit better than this, and I do like EGOL's approach.

I just ran KWD and got 44%.
After looking at the sites on the first page, I would not want to compete with them.
HomeDepot, Amazon, Walmart, Lowes, Sears, AceHardware, Kmart..... Not only will the SERPs be really difficult to conquer (impossible for most people).... but some of the businesses ranking on the first page are more into the sports of runnin' other people out of business, beatin' down their suppliers, and payin' their employees nuthin. They value that stuff higher than makin' a profit.
When I see them sellin' really cheap garden hoses and offerin' free shippin'... I know that it is a race to the bottom. Good way to lose your shirt a couple different ways.
My idea of sellin' on the web is to find products that usually are not sold in these types of stores and building a biz around them. If you go into Walmart and ask if they got jimmywidgets and the clerk says "huh?"... then you know you got somethin' that you can make money at on the web.

Chammy,
The KDS as with PA and DA are "relative" and are arbitrary to those creating the metric. PA and DA were created by Moz and not by Google. A pure example of this (and I swear I am not lying) is we have a client we have worked with that sells... hoes as one of their products. When you search on "hoes" and are not restricted by any geolocator, they rank well for the term against the same types (and many of the same) large big box retailers you see for hose. So, yes you can rank, but you have to be clever: Are you using structured mark-up (Schema) for your product, do you have aggregate review schema or an accepted review site streaming reviews to your site/page? Do you produce unique hose content? Do you have a hose video? Are your pictures ones you created and do you have correct alt text, etc.?
Never believe that DA alone means you cannot beat them; there are tons of Moz members who beat the big boys daily!I hope this helps.

What to do with a site of >50,000 pages vs. crawl limit?
What happens if you have a site in your Moz Pro campaign that has more than 50,000 pages? Would it be better to choose a sub-folder of the site to get a thorough look at that sub-folder? I have a few different large government websites that I'm tracking to see how they are fairing in rankings and SEO. They are not my own websites. I want to see how these agencies are doing compared to what the public searches for on technical topics and social issues that the agencies manage. I'm an academic looking at science communication. I am in the process of re-setting up my campaigns to get better data than I have been getting -- I am a newbie to SEO and the campaigns I slapped together a few months ago need to be set up better, such as all on the same day, making sure I've set it to include www or not for what ranks, refining my keywords, etc. I am stumped on what to do about the agency websites being really huge, and what all the options are to get good data in light of the 50,000 page crawl limit. Here is an example of what I mean: To see how EPA is doing in searches related to air quality, ideally I'd track all of EPA's web presence. www.epa.gov has 560,000 pages -- if I put in www.epa.gov for a campaign, what happens with the site having so many more pages than the 50,000 crawl limit? What do I miss out on? Can I "trust" what I get? www.epa.gov/air has only 1450 pages, so if I choose this for what I track in a campaign, the crawl will cover that subfolder completely, and I am getting a complete picture of this air-focused sub-folder ... but (1) I'll miss out on air-related pages in other sub-folders of www.epa.gov, and (2) it seems like I have so much of the 50,000-page crawl limit that I'm not using and could be using. (However, maybe that's not quite true - I'd also be tracking other sites as competitors - e.g. non-profits that advocate in air quality, industry air quality sites - and maybe those competitors count towards the 50,000-page crawl limit and would get me up to the limit? How do the competitors you choose figure into the crawl limit?) Any opinions on which I should do in general on this kind of situation? The small sub-folder vs. the full humongous site vs. is there some other way to go here that I'm not thinking of?

On Link Analysis tab I my best pages are 301 and 404 pages.
I looked on my redirrect file and found that /* redirects to /v/404.asp.
Moz Pro | | sbetzen
However if you look below at the link analysis the 404 page is getting a 404 error.
The homepage ecowindchimes.com/ is getting a 301 (but I don't know where it is going to).
The third one is also redirected. 1. [No Data] ecowindchimes.com/ ||| 301 ||| 2 ||| 36 2. 2. [No Data] ecowindchimes.com/v/404.asp ||| 404 ||| 2 ||| 34 3. [No Data] 3. ecowindchimes.com/index.html?lang=en-us&target=d2.html ||| 301 ||| 1 ||| 33 So I have 2 questions: 1) should this be fixed? and 2) how? This is a volusion site and I believe the "catchall" redirect was done by them0 -
Page Rank Report says #6 in Google but I can't find the page anywhere
So SEOMoz says that I've consistently ranked #6 for a certain keyword. But when I search I'm no where to be found. I've done regular searches, incognito and some non-seomoz reports and all come up with nothing in Google. I noticed it a week or two ago, but didn't think it would continue. This is no bueno. I wouldn't be surprised if I got penalized (luckily my homepage relatively well for similar keywords), an old seo consultant used very spammy tactics. I recently removed them, but not before I started to notice that I fell off the map. Why would SEOMoz not recognize this, and continue to say I'm ranking well? The keyword is bpi building analyst the page is http://www.cleanedison.com/courses/bpi-building-analyst

Image Asset pages shown to have Page Authority
When looking at top pages for my site in www.opensiteexplorer.org I'm seeing a bunch of asset pages being listed to have page authority. How could this be? Is open site explorer mistaken? Current on-page best practices
Given all the recent talk about over optimization, when was the last time SEOMoz updated the on-page report card tool? Rand wrote an excellent piece on Perfect On-Page Optimization (which is great, and thanks) in summer 2009. Is that still best practice 3 years later (and post-Penguin/Panda)? If not, has the SEOMoz on-page report card tool been updated to reflect current thinking for on-page best-practices? I know the higher level concept is "write for humans, not for bots" but if you can do both (and not create an unreadable seo-frankenpage) then why not? Does getting an "A" grade wreak of over optimization now? Should I use the key phrase at the start of the title, h1, and strong (or bold) elements on a page? Should have an image with file name and alt text equal to (or containing at the start) the key phrase?

Why does site explorer keep crashing?
For around the last 24 hours, every time I run site explorer it gets to just over a quarter of the way through and then just stops. I've tried this with different sites and it makes no difference. Although this is the first time I've had this problem (I don't use the tool regularly myself) one of my colleagues says it often happens to her. Is this a problem SEOmoz can explain and/or fix?

I need a tool/tools to extract keywords from say 50 sites in one niche and then check the rank tor those sites
This is for telemarketing of seo services I want to have some insight into an industry before I call them could this be done with the adwords keyword tool api and then exported to excel. It would also be nice to have data on backlinks say from seo moz opensite explorer.. Its just that the research you do before you even call a potential client is so time consuming and you can never really check to see how they are ranking for there main keywords manually. We are trying to automate as much of this initial research as possible... Any Idea's Thanks

On Page Optimization Reports - Huh?
I've been working hard to use this EXCELLENT tool for optimize some of what I consider my most important pages . . . But the automatic tool that pulls pages and grades them (the "summary" of the "on page" report) . . . I don't get it. It only graded three of my pages, and I don't understand how it chose what keywords to grade it for? I'm just very confused. I don't understand how it chose the pages to grade, not the words it chose to grade it against. 😞
