Has anyone had any success buying a local domain website, getting it on first page and then selling it to a local business? I have found some good domains that this might work for but I am wondering if anybody has tried this before.

I know a guy who is a gem hunter. He goes out looking for tourmaline, topaz, garnet, etc. He found a big pocket of tourmaline crystals. Lots of them were gem material, many of them were specimen grade. He estimated their value at about 1/2 million.
A couple of his buddies were joking about him rolling in dough and being on Easy Street. He told them... "Hey, it is going to take me 25 shows, 10000 miles of driving, 25 five-day road trips, 50 days of packing and unpacking, 125 days and nights on the road, about a year's worth of wages for employees to attend the shows with me, all of those meals on the road and hotel costs, another year of waves to have the specimens cleaned, labeled, weighed, identified, assessed and labled to be marketable... all of that on top of leases, excavation equipment and miner's wages to get them out of the ground, There might be a few bucks left.

David is right in terms of your time vs your return if you sell. I had the same idea about buying up domains (lots of them) in hopes to build a few, rank them, generate leads for businesses, then sell them or continue to build leads. It was a mess, expensive, time consuming and something I won't do again. Our return was low, if any on most. We just sold a bunch of the domains last year. Out of sight. Out of mind.
EGOL, the way you responded to this question is amazing. I enjoyed reading it and agree wholeheartedly with you.

Selling an existing local website is like trying to sell used goods... or fixer-upper houses.
It ain't gonna suit. When you find a buyer you are going to have to repaint, rebrand, and they ain't gonna like the domain that you picked out.
The guys who do painting here already have a brand. The name that was used when they were baptized and the name that they have done biz under for the past twenty years. They will not want BugtusslePainters.com. People who search will see it and react.... WhoTF is that? Where is TomThePainter ?
That painting contractor is not going to know the value of a website, the plumber is not going to know the value of a website.
Now, if you want to make money selling a ranked website make one in an industry where people know how much they are worth. Get a site ranking for Texas Hold'em. You will have people fightin' to get it.

Something wise my father once told me "Something is only worth how much someone is willing to pay for it."
It depends. First, how much of your time is going to be invested in creating, optimizing, and ranking this site? Since it sounds like this is something you are going to do with multiple domains, it could get pretty time-consuming.
Also, if you know how to get websites to page one, why are you not marketing that to potential clients and consumers? Trying to get a keyword driven domain to rank high and sell it off for a quick buck doesn't really seem like a good investment, either time wise, or for the success of your company. I would use sites that you have ranked high as an example of what you can do for clients, and sign them up for a monthly fee, rather than trying to sell them a "get rich quick" domain.
Why do I think this way? Here's the theoretical math:
Option 1:
Optimize keyword-driven site to rank in Google: approx 30 hours @ $50 hour labor cost (not sure what you charge for time, so using $50 as an example) = $1500Time cold-calling and email blasting potential buyers to purchase said domain: approx 8 hours = $400
Most likely cost for selling said site: approx $2000 max ($800-1500 most likely)
Gained vs Invested = $2000-1900=$100. Also this negates the fact that you can make additional money from this client again, unless you start the process over again.
Option 2:
Demonstrate SEO prowess to potential client using existing sites as proof of results
Sign up client for basic SEO services at $500 per month.
Invest 20-30 hours making client's site soar in results.
Client is happy. Refers friends and other business owners your way.
You make more money, and gain a positive reputation for being a quality seo provider.

Should Multi Location Businesses "Local Content Silo" Their Services Pages?
I manage a site for a medical practice that has two locations. We already have a location page for each office location and we have the NAP for both locations in the footer of every page. I'm considering making a change to the structure of the site to help it rank better for individual services at each of the two locations, which I think will help pages rank in their specific locales by having the city name in the URL. However, I'm concerned about diluting the domain authority that gets passed to the pages by moving them deeper in the site's structure. For instance, the services URLs are currently structured like this: www.domain.com/services/teeth-whitening (where the service is offered in each of the two locations) Would it make sense to move to a structure more like www.domain.com/city1name/teeth-whitening www.domain.com/city2name/teeth-whitening Does anyone have insight from dealing with multi-location brands on the best way to go about this?

One locations page, or multiple pages?
Hi, I represent a franchisor who does all marketing- including local seo- for our franchisees. I've read a lot about local SEO and understand the basics, but have some remaining questions. 1- If our typical territories are quite large and encompass more than one major city, should we create multiple location pages for the same franchise owner? I believe the answer should be yes from an SEO stand point, but the problem is that most of our franchisees naturally just have one business address (their home). Since PO boxes and virtual offices aren't the way to go, what's the best course of action? And when I say major cities, I'm really talking about major cities (and not just small towns/boroughs). Can they just use a friend's/relative's address? 2- There's a lot of info out there about "locations pages," but it's not really clear whether or not you should really just have ONE page for each location, or several pages with different content? For instance, it looks like a lot of businesses are creating just one, "home-page" looking landing page for their individual locations, with everything from services to testimonials on just that one page. Is this preferred over creating several different local pages for that one location? The latter is what we currently do. From the user stand-point, it looks like each franchise location has it's own "mini website" on our main website. For instance, a landing page optimized for the local business name, a local services page, a project/photo gallery page, local review page, etc. It seems like a lot less work just building one landing page for each location, but is the payoff the same? I'm torn between the two strategies- is it really worth the extra work (in terms of traffic + local ranking) to build out the individual pages for the one location? Thanks Moz Community!

Local food delivery SEO strategy
Hey guys, I'm working with a new company that doesn't have a brick and mortar storefront, they deliver. They basically deliver pre packaged smoothies in a VERY localized area (Vancouver, BC). I'm wondering how grandiose their goals should be re ranking for keywords that have non localized authority. What do I mean? Lets say their marketing pillars are "health education related to smoothies" "convenient veggies for smoothies" "(insert health benefit here) for smoothies". Should they be trying to compete for these keywords? Or should they really be trying to rank with keywords especially to Vancouver? Side note: What kind of effect does Country and Locality have on keywords that are generally used by content providers and not service related companies building out an inbound strategy? Multi Location business - Should I 301 redirect duplicate location pages or alternatively No Follow tag them ?
Hello All, I have a eCommerce site and we operate out of mulitple locations. We currently have individual location pages for these locations against each of our many categories. However on the flip slide , this create alot of duplicate content. All of our location pages whether unique or duplicated have a unique title Tag, H1, H2 tag , NAP and they all bring in the City Name . The content on the duplicated content also brings in the City name as well. We have been going through our categories and writing unique content for our most popular locations to help rank on local search. Currently I've been setting up 301 redirects for the locations in the categories with the duplicated content pointing back to the category page. I am wondering whether the increase in number of 301's will do more harm than having many duplicate location pages ?.. I am sure my site is affected by the panda algorithm penalty(on the duplicated content issues) as a couple of years ago , this didn't matter and we ranked top 3 for pretty much for every location but now we are ranking between 8 - 20th depending on keyword. An Alternative I thought, may be to instead of 301 those locations pages with duplicate content, is to put No Follow tags on them instead ?... What do you think ?. It's not economically viable to write unique content for every location on every category and these would not only take years but would cost us far to much money. Our Site is currently approx 10,000 pages Any thoughts on this greatly appreciated ? thanks Pete

Keyword Cannibalization? My home page is ranking higher for a keyword that another page is targeting
Hello! My website's http://lessonsgowhere.com.sg/ and we're a marketplace for local lessons. I've been working on the site's SEO for maybe 3 to 4 months now, and am seeing some good results. The one thing that really bugs me right now is that my homepage is ranking for a keyword that I'm trying to target with another page. Specifically, I'm targeting the group of keywords for 'cooking class', 'cooking lessons', 'cooking class singapore' with the category page: http://lessonsgowhere.com.sg/cooking-classes However, my home page is currently ranking on the first page for local search (Google Singapore), and my category page isn't! On the other hand, the page that I'm targeting for 'baking class', 'baking lessons', and 'baking class singapore' is doing fine and is already in the top 3 positions for the entire group of keywords. Anyone have any ideas as to what I can do?

How slow can a website be, but still be ok for visitors and seo?
Hello to all, my site http://www.allspecialtybuildings.com is a barn construction site. Our visitors are usually local. I am worried about page speed. I have been using Google Page Insight, and Gtmetrix. Although I cannot figure out browser leveraging, I have a 79 / 93 google score and for gtmetrix 98/87 score. Load times vary between 2.13 secs to 2.54 secs What is acceptable? I want to make sure I get Google love for a decent page speed, but for me these times are great. Bad times are like 7 seconds and higher. I have thought about a CDN, yet I have read horror stories too. I have ZERO idea of how to use a CDN, or if I need it. I just want a fast site that is both user and Google speed friendly. So my question is, what is a slow speed for a website? Is under 3 seconds considered ok? or bad for seo? But any advice is greatly appreciated.
