Duplicate pages
-
Hi I have recently signed up to Moz Pro and the first crawl report on my wordpress site has brought up some duplicate content issues. I don't know what to do with this data!
The original page : http://www.dwliverpoolphotography.co.uk/blog/
and the duplicate content page : http://www.dwliverpoolphotography.co.uk/author/david/
If anyone can point me to a resource or explain what I need to do thanks!
David.

Awesome - thanks for all the extra info David!
Just to clarify, do you mean 301 the author archives to the homepage? Yoast does this when you check "disable author archives".
-
Just wanted to add that he may want to process the 301's, even after setting the plugin correctly, as Google may have already indexed a lot of the non-SEF and author pages. On the new canoncial pages, it's probably a good idea to also check "no-archive" so the search engine only shows the most recent result.
David, for you to reference:
- NOINDEX tag tells Google not to index a specific page
- NOFOLLOW tag tells Google not to follow the links on a specific page
- NOARCHIVE tag tells Google not to store a cached copy of your page
- NOSNIPPET tag tells Google not to show a snippet (description) under your Google listing, it will also not show a cached link in the search results
Best of luck with your edits!

thank's guy's I will let you know how I get on!
Best wishes.

301 redirects are processed through your htaccess file, and your server. Here is an example of what the code looks like. This particular example is used to force "www" on our site, so that a user cannot access multiple versions of the home page: (btw if you don't have this in place, you should)
force www
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.webdesignandcompany.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.webdesignandcompany.com/$1 [R=301,L]The # symbol allows the description to be ignored, so that you can organize your htaccess rules easily, and have them labeled.
If you use cpanel for hosting, or have a host provider that uses it, here is how to process through the backend admin:
http://docs.cpanel.net/twiki/bin/view/AllDocumentation/CpanelDocs/ReDirects"I know you can use a plug in for wordpress, have you had any experience yourself implementing the rel'canonical' or 301 redirect?"
Super simple, so don't sweat it. By using the Yoast SEO Plugin, you can set the canonical page directly from the page's editor.
Here is the link explaining how to do just that:
https://yoast.com/wordpress/plugins/canonical/Hope this helps! If you need any further assistance let me know.

You have Yoast SEO installed, so follow these steps;
- Go to SEO->Titles/Meta->Other
- and for "author archives" check "noindex, follow"
- and if this is a single author blog, check "disable author archives"

You are most welcome David. You can use Yoast for Wordpress for handling rel=canonial.
Here for more: https://yoast.com/wordpress/plugins/seo/#canonical
Here you go for implementing 301 permanent redirection using .htaccess file on Apache server(Linux hosting):
If you are on a Windows server, here are the steps for 301 redirection:
http://www.iis.net/configreference/system.webserver/httpredirect
301 redirection is definitely faster than rel=canonical and almost same when it comes to passing on the SEO goodies to the canonical page. With 301 in place, in this case with the URLs mentioned by you for example(suppose, the author page is redirected to the homepage via 301), no one will be able to see the author page as it would take you to the homepage but with rel=canonical in place, everyone will be able to see the author page and its just that the search engines like Google will not index the author page as the cononical or the preferred page would be the homepage. So, ideally, you should be going with the rel=canonical implementation here. Hope it helps.
Good Luck my friend.

Hi Devanur, thank you for your response.
I have read that the 301 redirect passes more link juice to the original page. Although I am still trying to figure out how to actually physically do it!
I know you can use a plug in for wordpress, have you had any experience yourself implementing the rel'canonical' or 301 redirect?
Best wishes.
David.

Hi David,
I will be very quick here. 'rel=canonial' can come to your rescue.

WordPress - duplicate content
I'm using WordPress for my website. However, whenever I use the post section for news, I get a report back from SEOmoz saying that there's duplicate content. What it does is it posts them in the Category and Archive section. Does anyone know if Google sees this as duplicate content and if so how to stop it? Thanks

Is reported duplication on the pages or their canonical pages?
There are several sections getting flagged for duplication on one of our sites: http://mysite.com/section-1/?something=X&confirmed=true
On-Page Optimization | | Safelincs
http://mysite.com/section-2/?something=X&confirmed=true
http://mysite.com/section-3/?something=X&confirmed=true Each of the above are showing as having duplicates of the other sections. Indeed, these pages are exactly the same (it's just an SMS confirmation page you enter your code in), however, they all have canonical links back to the section (without the query string), i.e. section-1, section-2 and section-3 respectively. These three sections have unique content and aren't flagged up for duplications themselves, so my questions are: Are the pages with the query strings the duplicates, and if so why are the canonical links being ignored? or Are the canonical pages without the query strings the duplicates, and if so why don't they appear as URLs in their own right in the duplicate content report? I am guessing it's the former, but I can't figure out why it would ignore the canonical links. Any ideas? Thanks0 -
Page Title
My website was hacked last November and then again last week. Prior to the hacking we were at number one in Google.co.uk for our main search term "nile cruises' for years. After last November's hacking we dropped to about position 4 and after last week we are at position 7. Ima rebuilding the lost data and I am having to create new Title and Description meta data for each of the indexed pages. I am taking the opportunity to try and ensure my titles and descriptions are good and the correct length, etc but wondered about the best title format. I set our home page title over the weekend as: Nile Cruise | Leading ABTA & ATOL Bonded UK Nile Cruise Specialist I was going to try and cover 3 keyphrases in the title like this: Nile Cruise | Nile Cruises | Nile Cruise Bargains But I thought that might look a bit spammy because the 3 phrases are very similar. I wondered what anyone else might suggest? Thanks, Colin

Duplicate Page Titles
I have over 200 duplicate page titles on a site that I am working on. Does putting a date at the end of some of them make it a unique enough title?

How to avoid duplicate content on ecommerce pages?
I am currently building the site architecture for a very large ecommerce site. I am wondering how I should build it out if I have products that I want to include in multiple categories within my site. For example: Lets say I sell fitness equipment and I have categories for things such as: Treadmill, Exercise Bike, Stair Stepper, Weight Benches etc. But then I also have specific brand category pages such a: Precor, Life Fitness, Hammer, Body Solid So my question is how do I structure this so I am building this correctly? If I sell a Precor Treadmill I will want to include that product under the "Treadmill" category page as well as under the "Precor Equipment" category page. Can I get some advice for the best way to structure this? It's obviously something I want to avoid at all costs of doing improperly and having to fix later. Thank you Jake

Optimization of home page
Hi there I have an issue which, despite searching hard, I simply cannot find the right solution for. We have an index page that used to rank pretty well for a main industry keyword. However following a revamp of the site last year the kw slipped and no longer brings in decent traffic levels. The problem seems to be that the old static site had a sprinkling of variable anchor text links that brought value to the home page. Instead of the main anchor being "home" we would revert to "main keyword" and variations across the site sometimes in t he content but mainly on the nav bars. However the new CMS design structure restricts us considerably with anchor distribution and so instead we opted for the site logo on the masthead to have an ALT tag for "main keyword" but so as not to game google too much we added .."home" to the tag. Probably pointless but we figured it could do no harm. This ALT text is site wide Problem now is that we have lost the spread of internal nav bar anchors and variety etc. We have slipped in the serps for "main keyword" and I cant help thinking we are not maximising the anchors as we should. So what Im coming to is this.... How can we tell if Google is picking up the ALT tage anchor as the main anchor to rank the site at the expense of all internal text anchors. Despite retaining lots of embedded anchors - according to the Moz metrics these are not being picked up because OSE suggests the ALT tag anchor is taking precedence. The serps probably support this view as well. Should we: a) Vary the masthead ALT if there is no way of avoiding this being the most important link / anchor on the page b) Remove the ALT anchor and instead opt for content links high on the page (we do have nav bar links saying "Home" site wide as well which may overrid the embedded links?) c) Leave the ALT alone and still push for content anchors as described in b) What is the best way to handle this..? Best wishes and thanks Morch

Page Authority
I have recently optimised a set of images for a client of ours: I'm looking through all the PA of these newly optimised images, and have varying PA {from SEOmoz toolbar} I understand that internal linking will pass link juice, and obviously external links will add to the overall PA. I have several pages with a PA of 36: { Fairly deep pages} Yet they have no external or internal links going to them. My question is "How can a page gain any authority when it has no visible links pointing at it?" Obviously there must be a link pointing at it {internally} as Google wouldn't have crawled the page right? Also lets say all the keywords are of equal competitiveness would the keywords with highest PA rank higher than those on O PA pages. Many Thanks
