Same Meta description is being shown on Google?
-
Not sure why this is happening but when you this command into Google
site:"mywebsite": + "key phrase"
It brings up pages from my website which have the key phrase but I have noticed that Google is using the wrong meta description for all of them even though these pages all have their own unique meta description
Does anyone know why this would be happening?
Thanks

Google will choose a snippet it feels is appropriate based upon the user's query, and often doesn't choose the meta description. Do your descriptions show up as the snippet if you search for a query related to their content, rather than for a site:"mywebsite": + "key phrase" search, i.e. just [key phrase]?
-
Does the site use filters (ie dynamic php)
For example are the results that you are seeing when you enter site:"mywebsite.com": + "key phrase" similar to
mywebsite.com/SomePage/?col=red
mywebsite.com/SomePage/?col=blue
mywebsite.com/SomePage/?col=green&ftr=23So my question boils down to are there question marks in the URL of the pages that are appearing in the search results?
-
Google will sometimes choose what it thinks is the best snippet for your URL, depending on the search query.
-
...check the alt text. It could be alt text to a common image.
-
No the description does not exist on the page, I am getting 30 or 40 odd pages showing up with the same snippet from a unrelated page on all of them?
-
Creating a meta description tag does not ensure that this is what Google will show. If 'Google' believes there is a more relevant snippet to the query somewhere - anywhere - on your page, it will show that instead.
So - my question is this: Does the description that is being shown exist anywhere on the page, or is it some arbitrary snippet?

Google Open Graph
Hi I wanted to find out what makes Google select a site to show the answer to a question you type in search? For example, typing What is COSHH, brings up this site http://rospaworkplacesafety.com/2013/01/08/what-is-coshh-about-coshh/ and this answer top of Google SERPs. COSHH stands for 'Control of Substances Hazardous to Health' and under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002, employers need to either prevent or reduce their workers' exposure to substances that are hazardous to their health.8 Jan 2013 Is it their open graph mark up only? Test site is live on Google but it duplicates existing site...
Hello - my developer has just put a test site up on Google which duplicates my existing site (main url is www.mydomain.com and he's put it up on www.mydomain.com/test/ "...I’ve added /test/ to the disallowed urls in robots.txt" is how he put it. So all the site URLs are content replicated and live on Google with /test/ added so he can block them in robots. In all other ways the test site duplicates all content, etc (until I get around to making some tweaks next week, that is). Is this a bad idea or should I be OK. Last thing I want is a duplicate content or some other Google penalty just because I'm tweaking an existing website! Thanks in advance, Luke

Google webmaster tool content keywords Top URLs
GWT->Optimization->Content Keywords section... If we click on the keyword it will further shows the variants and Top URLs containing those variants. My problem is none of the important pages like product details pages, homepage or category pages are present in that Top URLs list. All the news, guides section url's are listed in the Top URLs section for most important keyword that is also present in my domain name. How to make google realize the important pages for the important keyword?

Decrease in Organic Traffic Due to Google Places
Hello there, we are national junk removal company and have franchises in most major cities in the US. We wanted to check to see if anyone else has seen a drop in organic traffic with the changes that Google has done with the amalgamation of Google Places with the organic rankings. All our places pages are ranking quite well and we are ranking higher organically but it appears that people go to the Google Places page and then either leaving or picking up the phone and calling our 1800 number to book a job instead of going to our website to make the booking. The interesting thing is that although Google started these changes back in October 2010 we have seen the drop in organic traffic mostly starting in April, even though we have seen a steady increase in organic ranking across the board. Has any other franchise based company seen this happen as well? Your feedback is greatly appreciated!

HTML Not Validating META Title??!!
This seems pretty odd to me. HTML 5 is not validating lots of the typical META content - including, amongst others, the META title. This is typically seen as a standard 'must-have' for many SEOs, including the check-list on SEOmoz. Has anybody else had this issue? And of course, did you find a solution? Thanks, Mark
