Ranking way worse than competitor even with better SEO metrics
-
Hello Moz Helpsters!
I write you since I feel I'm missing something BIG and I'm sure that with all your experience you can find easily what's wrong.
Here is my situation:
We rank pretty bad on several KW and our competitor does well. BUT:
- our pages are graded higher
- our pages load faster
- our pages have more more links
- our pages have more popularityI feel there is something BIG I'm missing but I can't get to it. Can you have a look and see if you find any BIG issue we could have missed?
Here are two pages for a good comparison. Both are ranking on "medecin generaliste paris" (translation: "general practitioner paris"):
- our page ranking #90: https://www.keldoc.com/medecin-generaliste/paris
- our competitor ranking #11: https://www.doctolib.fr/medecin-generaliste/parisAny help on this is veeeeryyy welcome
-
Your competitor's domain is trageted directly at France. Look at their domain name:
https://www.doctolib.fr/medecin-generaliste/paris
Even if your site is based around a directory, I would add some content to that page about what you are trying to rank for. The MOZ tools are just that, TOOLS. The purpose is to point out any shortcomings that could be dragging you down.
Let's make a short checklist of items to check:
1. You state that you have links, but where do they link to? Do they link to the home page, or are your inbound links pointed at the pages and keywords you want to rank?
2. Description (translated) "Find your General Practitioner in Paris, check available slots and make an appointment online". This could be worded a bit more convincingly, since this is most likely what shows up in search engine results with your link.
3. Google is most likely looking at the interactions of traffic with the site i.e. on page time, clickthrough ratio etc. These are the metrics that the MOZ tool will not show you, but that you can see in in your GWT report. Look at your analytics and GWT profile to see if there are any weak areas where people leave.
4. Having more links isnt enough on it's own. Where do they go? Do they make it as easy as possible to find a doctor, and once found, easy to contact them? -
*I bet if you put 1000 words of content about medecin generaliste paris on the landing page you'd get closer to your competitor!
*Internally link to your landing pages using real and helpful anchor text (negative and positive anchor text)
*Your using a .com address. I notice that most the SERPs on google.fr are .fr domains. I have the same issue on google.co.uk with .com / .co domains. I've found including the country name in the page title and h1 tag helps.
*Google Webmaster Tools also has a geographical target zone, set it to "France" (I've never noticed a massive impact from doing this - but it can't hurt).
*Keep building links to this page AND THE PAGES LINKING TO IT
And yes, your link Metrics are better from what I can see. But your competitor might just have more content on their pages?! And your domain is over 11 years old!

Keyword keeps fluctuating between a high rank and no rank?
I've searched around and I can't seem to find anyone else describing the issue I'm seeing. Basically for a very long time our website (snappages.com) has always ranked in the tens and twenties for "create a website". It's a high volume keyword and we get a lot of traffic from it. Around May 16th it suddenly disappeared completely from search results on Google and now it will sporadically show back up with a SERP in the twenties every 5-10 days for a few hours and then completely disappear again. This pattern has continued to this day. I've checked and there are no manual penalties and nothing has really changed dramatically from a content perspective or anything like that. I would understand if we got penalized and our ranking dropped, or even if it just completely disappeared? This is the only keyword that this is happening for, all the others remain unaffected. Anyone know how I can find out why this is happening or have suggestions on how to fix it?

What link would be better?
Hi Guys, Just wondering what would be better in this instance: finding an old post (with good authority) and getting a link from that old article or creating a brand new article and adding the link to that. Finding an old post (with good authority) and getting a link from that old article Creating a brand new article and adding the link to that. Both naturally link out to the page you want a link too. To me, number 1 as the page already has authority but then again number 2 since Google might place some weight to recency. Any thoughts? Cheers.

SEO question
Hi there! I'm the SEO manager for 5 Star Loans. I have 2 city pages running. We are running our business in 2 locations: Berkeley, CA & San Jose, CA. For those offices we've created 2 google listings with separate gmail accounts. Berkeley (http://5starloans.com/berkeley/) ranks well in Berkeley in Gmaps and it shows on first page in organic results. However the second city page San Jose (http://5starloans.com/san-jose/) doesn't show in the Gmaps local pack results and also doesn't rank well in organic results. Both of them have authentic backlinks and reviews. It has been a year already and it's high time we knew the problem 🙂 any comment would be helpful. thanks a lot

Is it normal to initially rank low in the SERPs, then over time gain rank?
We just released a very targeted page for a specific item about 18 hours ago. For the main keyword as well as multiple variations, we currently are ranking around # 40 to # 50 depending on what the exact query is. Is it normal to initially rank lower in the SERPs and then as the page ages, gain? Thank you for your insights!

International SEO Question
_The company I work for has a website www.example.com that ranks very well in English speaking countries - US, UK, CA. For legal reasons, we now need to create www.example.co.uk to be accessible and rank in google.co.uk. Obviously we want this change to be as smooth as possible with little effect on rankings in the UK. We have two options that we're talking through at the moment - Use the hreflang tag on both the .com and the .co.uk to tell Google which site to rank in each country. My worry with this is that we might lose our rankings in the UK as it will be a brand new site with little to no links pointing to it. 301 redirect to the .co.uk based on UK IP addresses. I'm skeptical about this. As a 301 passes most of the link juice, I'm not sure how Google would treat this type of thing - would the .com lose ranking? So my questions are - would we lose ranking in the UK if we use option 1? Would option 2 work? What would you do? Any help is appreciated._

Domain Forwarding for SEO
Hey guys, I recently created a new website for a client who was ranking #1 for the term "jupiter obgyn" but they have now dropped down to #4. This happened because their old home page was at www. instead of just jupiterobgyn.com. When you type in the www. version, it does take you to the root domain but it's not carrying the old PA! The www. version of the page had a 22 PA and the new root domain hosted page is a 1. How can I fix it so that "link juice" carries over? Is this something i need to do in 1and1 (their web host) or within Wordpress? Thanks!!!

What is the best way to rank well in two countries simultaneously with only one CCTLD
I have a .co.nz website and would like to rank on .com.au without setting up a new country specific website for .com.au. What is the best way to do this ?

Migrating online store to subdomain using shopify and effects on seo and energy down the road for seo
I'm looking for some clarity... Looking at using Shopify for an existing online store that we have to migrate. Setting up the store with shopify means we will be using a subdomain such as shop.mywebsite.com instead of mywebsite.com/shop. The following are points to consider when responding The client currently has an online store, however it's a proprietary shopping store and CMS that has since gone defunct and they need to migrate to an alternative in order to survive online against new CMS systems that allow the site and its content to be better optimized. There is a lot of existing SEO done on the current site that we don't want to loose PR on. There is roughly 2000 products Client has a fixed budget, dealing with checkout issues, custom work and various other "bugs" seems to be easier controlled with Shopify...thus budget can be used more on content/strategy and migration We want to run the main site in Wordpress and are wanting to use Shopify since it supports a gateway, has great features and seems like it would allow us to get more bang for the buck and can focus more on the main site and content strategy and drive traffic to the subdomain store if needed Or main concern is the effort of migrating 2000+ products to shopify and the traffic and PR it gives the current site will have a negative effect on the main domain itself. Should we really be considering this path? The domain is diveidc.com One main benefit to the subdomain is the ability to clearly segment products from the service portion of the site in the analytics and focus 2 clear strategies and track it in a very defined manner. We're really on the fence with this...any thoughts are welcome.
