Shoemaker with ugly shoes : Agency site performing badly, what's our best bet?
-
Hi everyone,
We're a web agency and our site www.axialdev.com is not performing well. We have very little traffic from relevant keywords.Local competitors with worse On-page Grader scores and very few backlinks outrank us. For example, we're 17th for the keyword "agence web sherbrooke" in Google.ca in French.
Background info:
- In the past, we included 3 keywords-rich in the footer of every site we made (hundreds of sites by now). We're working to remove those links on poor sites and to use a single nofollow link on our best sites.
- Since this is on-going and we know we won't be able to remove everything, our link profile sucks (OSE).
- We have a lot of sites on our C-Block, some of poor quality.
- We've never received a manual penalty. Still, we've disavowed links as a precaution after running Link D-Tox.
- We receive a lot of trafic via our blog where we used to post technical articles about Drupal, Node js, plugins, etc. These visits don't drive business.
- Only a third of our organic visits come from Canada.
What are our options?
- Change domain and delete the current one?
- Disallow the blog except for a few good articles, hoping it helps Google understand what we really do.
- Keep donating to Adwords?
Any help greatly appreciated!
Thanks! -
Ahh I get it now, redirect every URL from the old site to its homepage. Makes sense!
For point 2) I meant the URL Removal tool to de-index the whole site but this would no longer be needed if I apply the above suggestion.
Thanks a bunch!
-
Yep. The site isn't done. Every time we try to finish it, another couple of referrals come in.
Regarding "non-google sanction duplicate content" that's just my way with words. You have a French version of the site and an English version of the site. Without proper hreflang usage, that is duplicate content.
-
Well spotted, Travis!
-
ABSOLUTELY do NOT 301 anything from the old site to the new site...or you risk transferring the penalty!
I'm not sure what Google will do if you disallow via robots.txt AND 301. Most likely, this is safe, Google will remove the old site from the index and ignore the 301s. But I think there's some risk here that Google will read the pages anyway, see the 301s, and perhaps transfer the penalty.
Deleting the domain in webmaster tools will have no effect, other than to prevent you from seeing what Google thinks about the old domain :-/. Google will continue to index the old domain, follow redirected links, see duplicate content, etc.
-
Hello / Bonjour.
It looks like you might have an awful lot of duplicate content (e.g. category pages, date archives) on the site. I'd try getting rid of that before deciding to switch domains.
-
Hi Travis, thanks for your response.
I swear those hreflangs were OK not long ago! We'll fix them up, thanks!
Can you give an example of "non-google sanctioned duplicate content"?
The robots.txt file seems OK even though it's a bit heavy in verbatim. I'll ask to shrink it a bit. (By the way, I was curious about PhysVisible's robots.txt but looks like you're disallowing everything. Thought I'd let you know!)
Thanks again!
-
Merci Michael!
Can you elaborate on "Keep the old site running, but 301 redirect all of the pages to the home page..." ? Should any URL on www.oldsite.com redirect to the homepage of www.newsite.com?
We had these options in mind. What do you think of those?
-
robots.txt disallow the old site and map every URL with a 301 to help our users get to the right page while Googlebot won't follow those links (to be tested but seems logical), and/or...
-
Delete the whole old domain in GWT.
Thanks for your time!

Full disclosure: I've been studying hreflang/rel=alternate for the glorious day when someone wants, and will pay for, a solid Spanish translation. That day has not come. But I wanted to be prepared. So here goes:
Your English pages are pointing the canonical at the French pages. No nationalized form of English is mentioned in the hfrelang alternate. If your English speaking audience is Canadian, put en-ca in the empty quotes after hreflang=. Example from /en:
rel="alternate" hreflang="" href="http://www.axialdev.com/en/" />
All of your canonicals point to the fr-ca version of the pages. For the en-ca pages, they should point to the en-ca pages.
I grew up in Michigan. I have quite a few Canadian friends. The only thing that's different about spoken Canadian English is the pronunciation of 'about' and they tend toward en-gb in spelling. But you should use en-ca anyway.
Yep, you have a lot of site-wide links. That is true. That may be part of the problem. But right now, you have a lot of non-google sanctioned duplicate content.
The site also has one of the most involved robots.txt pages I've seen in a month or so. It may not be a good idea to call any old user agent, *, and not give them a directive. Check the end of the file.
A site should not nose dive within the space of a couple weeks without extensive search engine manipulation, or serious on-page issues. Your site has been live for seven years. It's better to doubt on-page first though.

Bonjour! (I lived in Montreal for 6 years :-).
I do a lot of penalty recovery work, and you're in the same situation as a number of my clients: algorithmic penalty (probably), and you've disavowed links, but....no Penguin update for a year.
The next Penguin data update is mostly likely very soon, from mutterings from Matt at SMX Advanced. It's been almost a year since the last one. Your disavows won't take effect until there IS a data update.
I would wait for the data update, and see if you recover on rankings for the 3 terms you had in your footer links from client sites. If you do, then great, continue on...
If not, then I'd be inclined to start a new domain, and move your content from your old site (and blog) to the new site, WITHOUT 301 redirecting. Keep the old site running, but 301 redirect all of the pages to the home page....you want Google to successfully fetch all of those blog pages with the great content, but find it's permanently moved to your home page, where that content no longer exists. This way your new site's content will not be seen as duplicate by Google (if you just 404 the pages, Google will presume the content is still as it was before it 404'd....FOR MONTHS).
It's worth going through all of the backlinks for the old site, seeing which ones are from healthy sites, and manually asking those webmasters if they'd kindly update their links to point to your new site.

Site Redesign Performance
Hi, I am looking for a bit of advice if possible. In October 2018 we did a site redesign for a website that we had acquired (www.drainageonline.co.uk) but we have lost SO much organic traffic since Oct (-40/50% each month). I have amended any crawl errors including broken redirects ensuring all 301's that we put in place are working correctly, ensured 404 pages working OK, implemented canonical onto all pages along with other bits but we don't really seem to be seeing any improvements in our organic traffic. Can anyone offer any advice on the above? Thanks, Lea

Canonical's, Social Signals and Multi-Regional website.
Hi all, I have a website that is setup to target different countries by using subfolders. Example /aus/, /us/, /nz/. The homepage itself is just a landing page redirect to whichever country the user belongs to. Example somebody accesses https://domain/ and will be redirected to one of the country specific sub folders. The default subfolder is /us/, so all users will be redirected to it if their country has not been setup on the website. The content is mostly the same on each country site apart from localisation and in some case content specific to that country. I have set up each country sub folder as a separate site in Search Console and targeted /aus/ to AU users and /nz/ to NZ users. I've also left the /us/ version un-targeted to any specific geographical region. In addition to this I've also setup hreflang tags for each page on the site which links to the same content on the other country subfolder. I've target /aus/ and /nz/ to en-au and en-nz respectively and targeted /us/ to en-us and x-default as per various articles around the web. We generally advertise our links without a country code prefix, and the system will automatically redirect the user to the correct country when they hit that url. Example, somebody accesses https://domain/blog/my-post/, a 302 will be issues for https://domain/aus/blog/my-post/ or https://domain/us/blog/my-post/ etc.. The country-less links are advertised on Facebook and in all our marketing campaigns Overall, I feel our website is ranking quite poorly and I'm wondering if poor social signals are a part of it? We have a decent social following on Facebook (65k) and post regular blog posts to our Facebook page that tend to peek quite a bit of interest. I would have expected that this would contribute to our ranking at least somewhat? I am wondering whether the country-less link we advertise on Facebook would be causing Googlebot to ignore it as a social signal for the country specific pages on our website. Example Googlebot indexes https://domain/us/blog/my-post/ and looks for social signals for https://domain/us/blog/my-post/ specifically, however, it doesn't pick up anything because the campaign url we use is https://domain/blog/my-post/. If that is the case, I am wondering how I would fix that, to receive the appropriate social signals /us/blog/my-post/, /aus/blog/my-post/ & /nz/blog/my-post/. I am wondering if changing the canonical url to the country-less url of each page would improve my social signals and performance in the search engines overall. I would be interested to hear your feedback. Thanks

How important is the user experience for SEO in google's eyes?
So far I've gathered that backlinks are really king, however you can't get good backlinks without well written content that serves a purpose. As well you can't do a great job with that content and not keep a good user experience, since why would anyone want to backlink to content that can be helpful if you squint an eye and suffer a few scrolling cramps. So how would you rank user experience in the everlasting war of SEO for Google? With this in mind, why would using bootstrap resources pose a problem? I've seen it could add issue to pageload times, however seems minifying could easily solve that. I personally enjoy the use of Bootstrap since it's very easy on the eyes and can have real positive effects when a user looks at content on such a framework.

Google can't access/crawl my site!
Hi I'm dealing with this problem for a few days. In fact i didn't realize it was this serious until today when i saw most of my site "de-indexed" and losing most of the rankings. [URL Errors: 1st photo] 8/21/14 there were only 42 errors but in 8/22/14 this number went to 272 and it just keeps going up. The site i'm talking about is gazetaexpress.com (media news, custom cms) with lot's of pages. After i did some research i came to the conclusion that the problem is to the firewall, who might have blocked google bots from accessing the site. But the server administrator is saying that this isn't true and no google bots have been blocked. Also when i go to WMT, and try to Fetch as Google the site, this is what i get: [Fetch as Google: 2nd photo] From more than 60 tries, 2-3 times it showed Complete (and this only to homepage, never to articles). What can be the problem? Can i get Google to crawl properly my site and is there a chance that i will lose my previous rankings? Thanks a lot

Why my site it's not being indexed?
Hello.... I got to tell that I feel like a newbie (I am, but know I feel like it)... We were working with a client until january this year, they kept going on their own until september that they contacted us again... Someone on the team that handled things while we were gone, updated it´s robots.txt file to Disallow everything... for maybe 3 weeks before we were back in.... Additionally they were working on a different subdomain, the new version of the site and of course the didn't block the robots on that one. So now the whole site it's been duplicated, even it´s content, the exact same pages exist on the suddomain that was public the same time the other one was blocked. We came in changes the robots.txt file on both server, resend all the sitemaps, sent our URL on google+... everything the book says... but the site it´s not getting indexed. It's been 5 weeks now and no response what so ever. We were highly positioned on several important keywords and now it's gone. I now you guys can help, any advice will be highly appreciated. thanks Dan

How do I get the best from our Blog and build quality links and drive traffic to our site?
We have recently setup a Wordpress focused blog (blog.towelsrus.co.uk) which is very much work in progress. Because of financial constraints we had to host this on a separate sub domain. I need to get to grips with blogs is new to me (only been doing SEO this for 3 months now) and have have read may posts on the forums here that this is one of the best ways to build links and engage the audience. How do I go about getting people to read my blog, and should I use this to pull in traffic on keywords we cannot through the main site or should i use this to re-enforce and build traction on those keywords we are trying to rank for on the main site?

Wordpress.com content feeding into site's subdomain, who gets SEO credit?
I have a client who had created a Wordpress.com (not Wordpress.org) blog, and feeds blog posts into a subdomain blog.client-site.com. My understanding was that in terms of SEO, Wordpress.com would still get the credit for these posts, and not the client, but I'm seeing conflicting information. All of the posts are set with permalinks on the client's site, such as blog.client-site.com/name-of-post, and when I run a Google site:search query, all of those individual posts appear in the Google search listings for the client's domain. Also, I've run a marketing.grader.com report, and these same results are seen. Looking at the source code on the page, however, I see this information which leads me to believe the content is being credited to, and fed in from, Wordpress.com ('client name' altered for privacy): href="http://client-name.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/could_you_survive_a_computer_disaster.jpeg">class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2050" title="Could_you_survive_a_computer_disaster" src="http://client-name.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/could_you_survive_a_computer_disaster.jpeg?w=150&h=143" I'm looking to provide a recommendation to the client on whether they are ok to continue moving forward with this current setup, or whether we should port the blog posts over to a subfolder on their primary domain www.client-site.com/blog and use Wordpress.org functionality, for proper SEO. Any advice?? Thank you!

What's the best SEO practice for having dynamic content on the same URL?
Let's use this example... www.miniclip.com and there's a function to log in... If you're logged in and a cookie checks that you're logged in and you're on page, let's say, www.miniclip.com/racing-games however the banners being displayed would have more call to action and offers on the page when a user is not logged in to entice them to sign up but the URL would still be www.miniclip.com/racing-games if and if not logged in, what would be the best URL practice for this? just do it?
