Downsides of Squarespace v WooCommerce
-
Hello Mozzers! I'm thinking of using either Squarespace or WooCommerce for an ecommerce website. WooCommerce is great - I've used it before... how flexible is Squarespace from an SEO perspective, compared to WooCommerce? Thanks in advance, Luke
-
Many thanks for your response Dennis - you make a lot of sense - speed is so important and the SS sites I've browsed weren't doing particularly well on that side of things.

Wordpress based will always be more flexible. I havent used SS for a year though. I've seen all their recent changes and how they've taken the right steps to better SEO but I would still lean on Wordpress/Magento. If you have a few products, then you might want to try out SS. If you have experience with Wordpress in the past, then jump on to that but be sure you have a fast server. If you have a LOT of products, go with magento

SEO- Manufacturer v Distributor
In respect to a safety clothing manufacturer manage SEO on behalf of, I've noticed that product distributors own 85% of the page 1 SERPs leaving product manufacturers such as my client largely under represented for the vast majority of search queries such as 'safety boots'. Love to hear your opinion on why this is and how I can combat it? TIA!

Should I noindex WooCommerce subcategories?
What's the best practice these days for handling indexing of WooCommerce product subcategories? Example: in the sitemap we have:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | btetrault
/product-category-a/
/product-category-a/subcategory-1/
/product-category-a/subcategory-2/
etc. Should the /subcategory-*/ be noindexed, canonical to parent, or stay as indexed? Thanks!2 -
Are there any downsides to using a canonical tag temporarily?
I'm working on redesigning our website. One of the content types has a main archive page (/success-stories) containing all of the success stories (written by graduates of our program). Because we plan to have success stories for other people (non-graduates), I'm using category hierarchies (/success-stories/graduates and success-stories/nonprofits, for example). It will go one level deeper to organize graduates by graduation year (/success-stories/graduates/%year%). I think this will work out well. However, we won't have non-graduate success stories for a little while, probably at least a few weeks, which means that /success-stories and /.../graduates indices will contain the same content for a while. So my question is this: Will it hurt to use a canonical tag that points to /success-stories/graduates as the authority until the main archive page contains more than just graduates? Or would it be better to use a 302 redirect from /success-stories to /.../graduates until more diverse content is added?

Any downside to a whole bunch of 301s?
I'm working with a site that needs a whole bunch of old pages that were deleted 301'd to new pages. My main goal is to capture any external links that right now go off to a 404 page and cleaning up the index. In dealing with this, I may end up 301ing pages that didn't have incoming links or may not have ever even really existed in the first place. These links are a mix of http and https. Is there any potential downside to just 301ing a list of several hundred possible old urls that currently trigger the 404 page? Thanks! Best... Mike

SEO Dilution: Key Words in Sub Directories v Using a Hyphen in a Single Directory
Hi Moz Community, I'm trying to understand if there is really any material difference with going with one URL structure compared to the other. I assume the hyphen example below is what most would argue is the best option, but due to certain circumstances (I wont go into) I'm most likely going to be forced to use the sub directories URL option. I'm just concerned that going down this path will have a material SEO effect...looking for peoples thoughts? Keep in mind for this example: I'm using the Shopify eCommerce platform and am forced to use the word 'collection' in the url I sell shoes so the word ' Birkenstock ' within the URL represents the brand & 'Sandals ' represents the style. The key word search in this instance would be birkenstock sandals Example 1 http://companyname/collection/birkenstock/sandals V http://companyname/collection/birkenstock-sandals Example 2 http://companyname/collection/sandals/birkenstock V http://companyname/collection/sandals-birkenstock Will be interesting to hear if people what difference if any each will bring. Thanks in advance for any insight.....

Root Domain v Subdomain
Hi, Just doing some analysis on a domain, and the (external) linking root domains show as:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | bjs2010
21 to Root Domain
4 to Subdomain The site is hosted under the www. subdomain version and there is no 301 from domain to www.domain Should the site be: Hosted on the root domain instead of subdomain 301 all incoming requests on domain to point to www.domain (subdomain) Any comments and experience on this type of situation appreciated!0 -
Periodic DNS Switching for Major Website Updates - Any Downsides?
A company is performing some major updates to a website and the proposal to go live with the updates was explained as follows: Once the updates are done on the testing environment and the site is ready to go live, we switch the DNS to the testing environment and then this testing environment becomes the production site. And the old production site becomes the new testing environment. Are there any potential negatives to this? Is there a name for this technique? Of course, we've already considered : additional hosting cost potential performance differences- reinstalling and setting up server settings - SSL, etc.

Squarespace Errors
We have a website hosted by SquareSpace. We are happy with SS, but have done some crawl diagnostics and noticed several errors. These are primarily: Duplicate Page Title Duplicate Page Content Client Error (4xx) We dont really understand why these errors are taking place, and wonder if someone in the Seomoz forum has a firm understanding of SS who is able to assist us with this? rainforestcruises.com thanks.
