Hreflang and canonical for multi-language website

Hi all,
We're about to have a new website in different languages and locations, which will replace the existing one.
Lets say the domain name is example.com. the US version will be example.com/en-us/ and the UK version will be example.com/en-uk/. Some of the pages on both version share the same content. So in order to solve it, we're about to use hreflang on each page + a canonical tag which will always use the US address as canonical address.
My question is - since we are using canonical tag along with hreflang, is there a possibility that a user who is searching with Google.co.uk will get the canonical US address instead of the UK address? Or maybe the search engine will know to display the right localized address since (UK) i've been using hreflang? It is really important for me to know, because i'm afraid we will lose the high rankings that we have right now on google.co.uk.

Thanks Lynnp for your answer, but unfortunately the suggestions given and documented with those previous Q&As are not valid anymore, because Google has since few months offered a new interpretation to the hreflang/rel="canonical" co-existence issue (read my answer).

If the hreflang is set up correctly, then the answer is NO.
hreflang and rel="canonical", as stated by Google itself, are two completely different kind of information.
- The first tells Google what URL to show depending on the language and location of users;
- The second tells Google if the URL it is crawling is identical to another one, which is referenced as href in the rel="canonical", therefore to consider it for indexing.
Check this post by David Sottimano, that is quite claryfing (and reports what Google really says now about this kind of situation)
When both annotations are used, we are practically saying this to Google (pardon me for the maybe poor metaphor):
Ok Google, I'm telling you that this URL - A - must be canonicalized to the URL B, so please don't count it as duplicated content. On the other hand, though, for me it is extremely important that you show URL A to the all English speaking users in Great Britain (Google.co.uk). Therefore, just for the situation don't filter out URL A.
Disclaimer: this is true in 99% of the cases, because we know also that the rel="canonical" is not a directive, but a strong hint we are giving to Google.
Because of this it is always a good idea - in the long term - to localize the content, even if American English and British English seems so similar (they aren't). Google has become smart enough to understand the different "flavors" a language may have in different territories.

If the high rankings you have on .co.uk are for competitive keywords then I think you are wise to be concerned. Is the site originally from the US or what is influencing the decision to make the en-us version the default with the new site? Keep in mind also what the default example.com will be supporting, would that also be en-us (thereby rendering /en-us/ irrelevant)?
It used to be that using canonical together with hreflang was ok by google but had some odd side effects: If you canonical the uk version to the us version then certain uk searches could see the uk url but with title/meta/content from the us page. That can be ok depending on what your titles/content are like. If your us page title is 'my company USA' then that is probably not what you want uk searches seeing even if the link lands them on the uk page in the end. It also usually meant that the uk pages CONTENT itself was not searchable in google, so if the page for example had the only mention of a uk phone number then this number would not show up in google serps.
That being said, it seems that google has changed the guidance on using canonicals and hreflang together and is now suggesting only using canonicals within the same language/region set. Check here and the comments here for some more details. Soooo.... not sure if that helps answer your question much more!

My website is constantly decreasing
For few weeks ago my website is constantly decreasing in search position. I lost keywords and is gooooing down.

The tags are printer models and generate a url in which they have the products.
Ex. https://www.sertit.ro/cartus-imprimanta-cilindru-color-hp-laserjet-pro-m-177fw goes to the products for that printer model.
The question is… should I make tag canonical?

Canonical error from Google
Moz couldn't explain this properly and I don't understand how to fix it. Google emailed this morning saying "Alternate page with proper canonical tag." Moz also kinda complains about the main URL and the main URL/index.html being duplicate. Of course they are. The main URL doesn't work without the index.html page. What am I missing? How can I fix this to eliminate this duplicate problem which to me isn't a problem?

Canonical URL on frontpage
I have a site where the CMS system have added a canonical URL on my frontpage, pointing to a subpage on my site. Something like on my domain root.Google is still showing MyDomain.com as the result in the search engines which is good, but can't this approach hurt my ranking? I mean it's basically telling google that my frontpage content is located far down the hierarki, instead of my domain root, which of course have the most authority.

I have a problem with an SEM Rush warning on a website audit, for www.enjoyprepaid.com. It tells me "5852 pages are lacking language declaration", but I don't understand what it means and how to actually fix this problem. Rel="canonical" What if there is no header??
Hi Everyone! Thanks to moz.com, I just found out that we have a duplicate content issue: mywebsite.com and mywebsite.com/index.php have the same content. I would like to make mywebsite.com the main one because it already has a few links and a better page rank. I know how to do a 301 redirect (already have one for www.mywebsite.com) but I am aware that a 301 redirect for my index file would create a loop issue. I have read the article about redirecting without creating a loop (http://moz.com/blog/apache-redirect-an-index-file-to-your-domain-without-looping) but quite frankly I don't even have a clue what he's trying to tell me (e.g. "Create an apache DirectoryIndex directive for your document root." What????!)… So I figured a rel="canonical" tag for my index file would be easier and fix the problem, too (right??) In every "How to" description they always say you have to put the rel="canonical" tag in the header of your duplicate content file. But: My index.php has no header (or nothing that looks like a header to me)! This is what it looks like: foreach($_GET as $key => $value)

Google not indexing my website
Hi guys, We have this website http://www.m-health-expo.nl/ but it is not indexed by google. In webmaster tools google says that it can not fetch the site due to the robots.txt but i do not see any faults in it. http://www.m-health-expo.nl/robots.txt Do you see something strange, it really bothers me.

Removing indexed website
I had a .in TLD version of my .com website floated for about 15 days, which was a duplicate copy of .com website. I did not wish to use the .in further for SEO duplication reasons and had let the .in domain expire on 26th April. But still now when I search from my website the .in version also shows up in results and even in google webmaster it shows the the website with maximum (190) number of links to my .com website. I am sure this is hurting the ranking of my .com website. How can the .in website be removed from googles indexing and search results. Given that is has expired also. thanks

Canonical Tag Pointing To The Same URL
Does it matter if a canonical tag points to the URL in which the tag is on? Example Page: http://www.domain.com Canonical tag: rel="canonical" href="http://www.domain.com" /> I only ask because a client of mine has a CMS that automatically does that to every page on the site and there's no way to remove it. Will this have a negative impact or does it not matter at all? Any insights would be great because I can't find a clear answer anywhere online. Thanks!
