Absurdly High Crawl Stats
-
Over the past month and a half, our crawl stats have been rising violently. A few weeks ago, our crawl stats rose, such that the pages crawled per day worked out to the entire site being crawled 6 times a day, with a corresponding rise in KB downloaded per day.
Last week, the crawl rate jumped again, such that the site is being crawled roughly 30x a day. I'm not seeing any chatter at there about an algorithm change, and I've checked and double-checked the site for signs of duplicate content, changes in our backlink profile, or anything else. We haven't seen appreciable changes in our search volume, either impressions or clicks.
Any ideas what could be going on?

FWIW, after this crawl, our organic traffic has been gangbusters since this heavy crawl period (which stopped around 9/12.) Whatever this heavy crawl was, it appears to have been a net positive for us!

Any feedback from your web logs on what Google's crawling?
-
Hi,
Are you talking about the crawl rate from Web master tools ? Can you share a screenshot inlcuding all 3 areas in the crawl section ? (time, kb and pages)
Cheers.

No major changes to the content structure. Crawl frequency has always been set to google-optimized, and all the numbers i'm looking at are via crawl stats in GWT.
In terms of other monitoring on the site, we've got several tools running in regards to uptime/downtime, Moz Analytics, and a few other services that might crawl. I'm going to run Splunk on our server web logs this weekend to see what pages Googlebot is hitting.

Has the content change? Did you check crawl frequency in webmaster tools? Many issues can get this number up.

Have you got anyone performing any monitoring on your site?

Googlebot crawl error Javascript method is not defined
Hi All, I have this problem, that has been a pain in the ****. I get tons of crawl errors from "Googlebot" saying a specific Javascript method does not exist in my logs. I then go to the affected page and test in a web browser and the page works without any Javascript errors. Can some help with resolving this issue? Thanks in advance.

Google has deindexed 40% of my site because it's having problems crawling it
Hi Last week i got my fifth email saying 'Google can't access your site'. The first one i got in early November. Since then my site has gone from almost 80k pages indexed to less than 45k pages and the number is lowering even though we post daily about 100 new articles (it's a online newspaper). The site i'm talking about is http://www.gazetaexpress.com/ We have to deal with DDoS attacks most of the time, so our server guy has implemented a firewall to protect the site from these attacks. We suspect that it's the firewall that is blocking google bots to crawl and index our site. But then things get more interesting, some parts of the site are being crawled regularly and some others not at all. If the firewall was to stop google bots from crawling the site, why some parts of the site are being crawled with no problems and others aren't? In the screenshot attached to this post you will see how Google Webmasters is reporting these errors. In this link, it says that if 'Error' status happens again you should contact Google Webmaster support because something is preventing Google to fetch the site. I used the Feedback form in Google Webmasters to report this error about two months ago but haven't heard from them. Did i use the wrong form to contact them, if yes how can i reach them and tell about my problem? If you need more details feel free to ask. I will appreciate any help. Thank you in advance C43svbv.png?1

How Often is Site Crawled
Good morning- I saw some errors in my first crawl and immediately removed the pages from my website. I then re-created my XML sitemap and uploaded to Google. The question I have is will the site be crawled to recognize the changes in the next day or so? The pages were just placed on the site as test pages and never removed. The initial crawl that notified me it was done found the errors and were removed. Thanks for your help. Peter

Can too many pages hurt crawling and ranking?
Hi, I work for local yellow pages in Belgium, over the last months we introduced a succesfull technique to boost SEO traffic: we have created over 150k of new pages, all targeting specific keywords and all containing unique content, a site architecture to enable google to find these pages through crawling, xml sitemaps, .... All signs (traffic, indexation of xml sitemaps, rankings, ...) are positive. So far so good. We are able to quickly build more unique pages, and I wonder how google will react to this type of "large scale operation": can it hurt crawling and ranking if google notices big volumes of content (unique content)? Please advice

What does the Google Crawler see when crawling this page?
If you look at this page http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/t/49/61/185/730/Batteries. You will see we have a vehicle filter on it. Right now you only see a picture of a battery and some bad text that needs to be updated ( We just hired a copywriter!). Our question is when google crawls this site will thy just see this or will they see all the products that appear after you pick a "machine type" "make" "model" and "year" Any help would be great. Right now we think it just sees this main page how we have set things up; however, we know that the crawler is also crawling some ajax. We just want to be sure of things.

Link Profile, is the keyword ratio too high?
Hi, Our website (www.NutritionMission.co.uk) has dropped from 6 to 30 in the ranking for our main keyword (Nutritional Therapy). Pulling a spreadsheet off of all the inbound links looks like 41% of anchor text is related to Nutritional Therapy. Is this ratio too high for the new google update? There are also a lot of directory submissions from the SEO people we were paying before. Anyone point me on the right track to get some idea to how to work things out? ie. add more links to ratio of anchor text is lowered etc. Kind Regards, Ian.

Crawl Errors for duplicate titles/content when canonicalised or noindexed
Hi there, I run an ecommerce store and we've recently started changing the way we handle pagination links and canonical links. We run Magento, so each category eg /shoes has a number of parameters and pages depending on the number of products in the category. For example /shoes?mode=grid will display products in grid view, /shoes?mode=grid&p=2 is page 2 in grid mode. Previously, all URL variations per category were canonicalised to /shoes. Now, we've been advised to paginate the base URLs with page number only. So /shoes has a pagination next link to /shoes?p=2, page 2 has a prev link to /shoes and a next link to /shoes?p=3. When any other parameter is introduced (such as mode=grid) we canonicalise that back to the main category URL of /shoes and put a noindex meta tag on the page. However, SEOMoz is picking up duplicate title warnings for urls like /shoes?p=2 and /shoes?mode=grid&p=2 despite the latter being canonicalised and having a noindex tag. Presumably search engines will look at the canonical and the noindex tag so this shouldn't be an issue. Is that correct, or should I be concerned by these errors? Thanks.
