Why do I have over 3,000 less backlinks compared to last year?

When I compare the number of backlinks in Open Site Explorer today compared to the same day last year, why do I have 3,000 less?
-
This could be for multiple reasons. If you are looking at raw total links (not unique domains) linking to you, one blogger linking to you with a sitewide link and if that person change his blog's link display from sitewide to homepage only can impact numbers like that. Have you also been monitoring your competitor links ? How have they changed ?
Also, the quality of the sites OSE uses it's in index would improve over time, in which case spam blogs etc might get dropped, thereby causing in reduction in the number of links.
There could be a number of things. See OSE Stats below from their update on 9th Oct, 2014
- 166,012,290,869 (166 Billion) URLs
- 14,298,548,989 (14 Billion) subdomains
- 168,560,672 (168 Million) Root Domains
- 836,560,885,910 (836 Billion) Links
- Followed vs. Nofollowed
- 2.51% of all links found were nofollowed
- 63.17% of nofollowed links are internal
- 36.83% are external
- Rel Canonical - 19.74% of all pages now employ a rel=canonical tag
- The average page has 105.24 links on it
- 87.45 internal links on average
- 17.79 external links on average

Unsolved Large discrepancy in number of links using compare links tool
Hi there, I’m trying to understand the large discrepancy in number of links among websites. For instance, I am comparing landing pages among two different colleges. One college has over 7 million links, while the other has only 72,000 links. Meanwhile, these colleges are fairly comparable in terms of population and prestige. Could anyone help me understand why this metric is wide ranging, and how a college could have so many links? Specifically looking at total links, internal links, external links, and linking domains.

OSE: Missing back-links and High DA website with low DA backlinks
I have gone through a website with 81 DA; where its link equity back-links with highest DA of 70. Hardly 5 back-links 60 to 70 DA and just 25 root domains. This seems very unusual to me. Can someone clarify this for me? Can a website with low DA back-links can make high DA? If so what could be other major contributing factors for this?

Why Moz Back links check tool is very Slow compared with other tools?
I've created a new website 50 days old with a vision of sharing high-quality content. I created some pages which are useful and helpful, what make other people link to my site. Early days, two weeks ago I've started checking my backlinks starting with Ahref and majestic. three days ago I decided to join Moz too and use Moz explorer. But, I discovered that Moz tool is too slow compared with other tools. Why? Starting with Ahref. They discovered more than 100 links and updating their data for my site as a new website every 6 hours as I know. Also majestic for the first time discovered six links then every two days they updating their data. Even Google discovered some of my backlinks. Specially links from high-quality sites such as Wikipedia with high-quality pages. Moz tool discovered zero of my backlinks even after subscribing. I don't think Moz need to discover websites like Wikipedia which already indexed by Moz. So, I wonder Why Moz tools are very very very slow like that? Update: (This is a question, not a discussion. So, please don't edit it) Can any Moz support answer please? Thanks.

My Backlinks are Coming ZERO in Open SIte Explorer
I have made many links for my website, I checked in majestic it showed me about 40. But MOZ is showing Zero. The last i remember I checked: Add noodp meta robots tag sitewide in SEO YOAST. It said it prevents search engines from using the DMOZ description for pages from this site in the search results. Also I have a NoIndex (canonical ) on category, archive, author, tag to avoid Duplicate Data. But when i see the source of my website, it shows <rel link="canonical">on every single page and post of website. Can this be the reason why MOZ is not showing any backlinks? </rel>

External link numbers down year on year
Hi, Just wondering if anyone knows why a website that has definitely had some links acquired over the last year would now show less links and from fewer referring domains than they had this time last year? How is that possible - assume it is down to the way OSE / Moz crawl the web and collect data but need a definitive explanation for a client that has noticed the drop in link metrics and as a result authority. Many thanks,
