Requirements for mobile menu design have created a duplicated menu in the text/cache view.
-
Hi,
Upon checking the text cache view of our home page, I noticed the main menu has been duplicated.
Please see: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://www.trinitypower.com&strip=1
Our coder tells me he created one version for the desktop and one for the mobile version. Duplicating the menu cannot be good for on page SEO. With that said, I have had no warnings reported back from Moz. Maybe the moz bots are not tuned to looks for such a duplication error.
Anyway, the reason the coder created a different menu for mobile in order to support the design requirements. I did not like the look and feel of the responsive version created based on the desktop version.
Hi solution to this problem is to convert the Mobile version menu into ajax. what do you guys think?
Thanks,
Jarrett

Thanks George, much appreciated.

Hi Jarrett,
Although the menus probably look different in your designs (an assumption on my part), the HTML looks identical on the link you provided (ULs/LIs). If the HTML is the same, then you'll use CSS to vary the appearance of them - specificially using the viewport on responsive mobile which is designed for exactly this scenario.
Perhaps I'm missing some other dev reason why it can't be done, but using ajax for this, even if you do attempt to block Google crawling it sounds like an over-engineered solution.

thanks George,
The menu for the mobile view is quite different... mega menu style. I may go back to pure responsive, but what do you think of this proposed solution from my developer?
"The original menu were responsive. But for new mobile menu, I had to create new separate responsive menu for mobile version. Because I couldn't implement the new design on existing menu. Both menus are same in terms of text but different in terms of tags and structure.
***For the Ajax, the menu will call from other URL and we can disallow this URL to crawl for Google and other Search Engine. So in the text version only one version will be displayed."
It feels like a hack to me and I am concerned about it both being browser compatible moving forward and if there would be any negative impact I can't think of having do to with mobile crawl bots.
Thanks,
Jarrett

Hi,
Moz won't report this as an issue because there's no such detectable issue as having duplicate content on the same page. Duplicate content issues are discovered between two or more pages.
You could ajax the mobile menu, but given that google can and will crawl with javascript enabled, it will probably still come across 2 menus.
Personally I'd tell the developer to come up with a responsive solution. Looking at the markup, I'm guessing there will be at least some similarities between desktop and mobile menu experiences. Possibly a bit more painful in the short term, but worth it in the long run.
George

Can the design still be considered adaptive if the URL is different?
I was under the impression our site had a mobile dedicated design, but my developers are telling me we have an adaptive design. The mobile site is set up different and has different content and the url is as follows: www.site.com/MobileView/MobileHome.aspx Can it still be considered adaptive if the URL is not the exact same? Hopefully this make sense and I appreciate anyone's input!

Confirm responsive design is accessible to crawlers?
Trying to ensure crawlers can access all important info on a new responsive website, but it's javascript-heavy. Following Google's advice/best practices, but can't get the Fetch and Render tool to confirm it's working. Anyone dealt with this before? Legitimate hidden text and H1s are "OK?" Show me the data!
I'm trying to promote the SEO perspective during a site redesign so I'm researching the impact of design requests: Embedding text in graphic headers and applying to the graphics to get the SEO value Reducing view-able text on a page for design reasons and by using JavaScript to hide text in accordions or tabs. SEOmoz uses these techniques on their ranking report and most of what I read in teh forums says it is OK to hide text if your motives are pure and the text displays in a text-only browser. But I do SEO, not SEOK. I want to optimize, not just avoid penalties. And I try to make decisions based on data, not just anecdotes. Are there any studies out there on the effects these hidden-text topics? How much difference DOES it make to have the text exposed? Since there is potential for spam with these techniques, why would Google give the same rank to pages with and without hidden text? When I'm balancing UX and SEO, I want to clearly define the trade-off. What have you done when faced with this dilemma?

Best method to stop crawler access to extra Nav Menu
Our shop site has a 3 tier drop down mega-menu so it's easy to find your way to anything from anywhere. It contains about 150 links and probably 300 words of text. We also have a more context-driven single layer of sub-category navigation as well as breadcrumbs on our category pages. You can get to every product and category page without using the drop down mega-menu. Although the mega-menu is a helpful tool for customers, it means that every single page in our shop has an extra 150 links on it that go to stuff that isn't necessarily related or relevant to the page content. This means that when viewed from the context of a crawler, rather than a nice tree like crawling structure, we've got more of an unstructured mesh where everything is linked to everything else. I'd like to hide the mega-menu links from being picked up by a crawler, but what's the best way to do this? I can add a nofollow to all mega-menu links, but are the links still registered as page content even if they're not followed? It's a lot of text if nothing else. Another possibility we're considering is to set the mega-menu to only populate with links when it's main button is hovered over. So it's not part of the initial page load content at all. Or we could use a crude yet effective system we have used for some other menus we have of base encoding the content inline so it's not readable by a spider. What would you do and why? Thanks, James

Looking for a Static Blog Roll (Directory) plug in / tool
I am looking to add a static page to my site to allow people to add their site to a 'master directory". I'd like to make this as SEO friendly as possible. Here's it what I would really like to be able to do. 1. Someone visits the page and can either browse the blog directory on that page, or 2. Fill out a short from that has their blog name, url, short description of their blog, their state, country, and maybe the option to upload an image as well. This way people can search by the state / country to find people near by. 3. I'd like the links to be no-follow. 4. I'm not sure if there is an easy way to do this (I think I've seen some plug in's that may be able to do it.) 5. I'm also not sure if there is anything I'm missing here that could make this better. What I don't want is just a long list of links like everyone has on their side bar. I'd like to make it better, more user friendly, more seo friendly, and more helpful than that. Any creative input on how I might do this is appreciated. Thanks. 🙂

Looking for quality, cheap web design company recommendations
Does anyone have any recommendations of a very cheap web design company from India or other countries where the work is also high quality? I can project manage the development and provide a set of web standards such as to use valid code, no meta keyword tags, no flash, etc etc. I am looking for companies I can trust to perform the actual work. The web is full of companies but examples of quality work with WordPress, Joomla and particular ecommerce platforms is very thin or non-existent. If you can share any companies which you have personal experience with, I would appreciate it.

Where to find high quality (affordable) web designers?
Hi everyone, I am looking for find high quality web designers that are affordable. I am open to many options. There are several things I have looked into. 1. I have looked for designers via CSS galleries, but I don't really know how to get in touch with designers or find them. Rand recently talked about this in a webinar, but if anyone has specific insights on how to find people this way, please let me know. 2. I have also looked into website design contests from sites such as: DesignCrowd.com 99designs.com CrowdSpring.com DesignContest.com I haven't used these services and I was wondering if anyone has experience with design contests. 3. I have looked into the option of hiring a freelancer on oDesk or a similar freelancer site. I don't really know the cost, how to find a good designer, how to avoid inexperienced but cheap designers and all the other such roadblocks that come along with freelancers. If anyone could provide insight into this, it would be greatly appreciated.
