301 Redirect keep html files on server?
-
Hello just one quick question which came up in the discussion here: http://moz.com/community/q/take-a-good-amount-of-existing-landing-pages-offline-because-of-low-traffic-cannibalism-and-thin-content
When I do 301 redirects where I put together content from 2 pages, should I keep the page/html which redirects on the server? Or should I delete? Or does it make no difference at all?
-
yes thank you guys, that's how I thought about it as well and just wanted to clarify

Hi Heiko,
When you use 301 you remove the page from server. 301 redirects are done in server files like Linux/Unix's htaccess
example
redirect 301 /old-page.html http://www.adomain.com/new-page.phpFurther more, it is good practice to remove / update all your website links to this page.
In theory you are correct, if you leave the page up, it will likely never get viewed as the redirects happen at the server level. But the general rule would be to remove it.

Once you redirect a page, it will no longer be crawled so you can remove it from your server. Unless you want to keep it to possibly use again in the future...that's the only reason I could see for saving it. Sometimes I leave it out of sheer laziness
It doesn't matter for SEO if the content is there on your server or not because the redirect stops search bots from getting in there at all.
Hopefully that answers your question!

thanks shakur..
but I still think the original question is not answered completly or I missinterprete the google guidelines..
"remove it from your index" --> I can remove it via webmaster tools, but still can leave it on the server..
Personally I think it will make no difference If I remove it or not from the server, if I set the redirect, but would be happy to clarify this before.

Hi there,
Google provides some clear guidelines to make sure we all know how they want us to manage redirections.
301 – Search Engines: Your page is no longer available, and has permanently moved to a new page. Please remove it from your index and pass credit to the new page.
When to use 301
- As default – this is the preferred method
- Pages that are being permanently moved or replaced
- Domains that are permanently moved (acquisitions, rebranding, etc.)
- 404 pages and expired content (assuming relevant content or a page exists)
Canonical – (most) Search Engines: You have multiple versions of this page (or content), only index this version. You will keep the others available for people to see, but don't include them in your index and pass credit to your preferred page.
When to use canonical:
- When 301s can't be implemented, or take too much time
- Duplicate content but you want to keep both pages live
- Dynamic pages with multiple URLs of a single page (from sorting features, tracking options, etc.)
- Site-wide considerations like (domain/page/index.html vs. domain/page/ for the same page) can be easier with canonicals
- Cross-domain considerations where both sites are similar, but need to remain live
Hope it helps you.

Hi everyone, Recently I have faced a crawl issue with my media images on website. For example this page url https://intreface.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Horion-screen-side-2.png has 302 HTTP Status and the recommendation is to change it 301. I have read the article on temporary redirections here:
https://mza.bundledseo.com/learn/seo/redirection?_ga=2.45324708.1293586627.1702571936-916254120.1702571936
but its not written here how to redirect in my HTML 1 image url not the landing page.

I have messaged to MOZ Support but they recommended to go for the MOZ Community!
Screenshot 2023-12-15 at 11.06.02.png Could you assist me wit this issue please? I can reach HTTML of the necessary page and change what I need for permanent redirection but firstly I need to understand how to do that correctly.0 -

Should we 301 redirect our old domain to the new domain
We have a product that when started was under the domain appnowgo.com. We've since changed the name and the domain is now knackhq.com. The latter domain doesn't rank nearly as well as the former for many of the keywords we are targeting. For example... "online database builder" and "web app builder" are two of those keywords. Obviously having app in the domain is not a bad thing but it is our old name. The question is, should we 301 the appnowgo.com domain to knackhq.com? Or should we use that better rank and just link users to knackhq.com from the appnowgo.com site until we can increase our ranking for knackhq.com? We don't plan to update the content on appnowgo.com anymore and we obviously don't want to drop off rank if at all possible. Thanks! Eric

301 Redirect without specifying base domain?
Hi guys, about 10 minutes ago, I finally found the underlying problem in magento between 301 redirects and canonical tags - part of the reason why it was hard to identify was because the problem is not constant through all pages. Anyway now that I found the problem, I have about 50 301 redirects to implement via .htaccess. Now I know the regular syntax is Redirect 301 /oldpage.html http://www.yoursite.com/newpage.html But I'm wondering if there's a way that the base domain doesn't have to be specified in the second half of this line. Something like: Redirect 301 /oldpage.html /newpage.html I'm sure this can be done, somehow. Thanks!

301 Redirect question www to root.com
I have a site that has been up for a few weeks now and is currently in a www format and i am considering changing it to just mydomain.com I also have quite a few directory listings (including google places/bing) for this site w/ the www. url. If i do this, change it in my google analytics, and update my wordpress internal page + htaccess file. Will i lose any of the link juice i had from my www pages? Would this be something that would be advised since i've registered for many sites, or is there a potential that this could end up hurting me? Thanks,

How long should you keep 301 redirects?
Hi, Back in 2009 I decided to update an older site from .htm and .shtml to .php. In order to minimize the impact I would go in every month and do a 301 redirect on the .shtml page to the new .php page. So I have many that range from 2009 through 2010. I had left the old 301's because I felt they would only be used if needed but I would think I should clean up my .htaccess by removing the old 301 redirects if they are not needed. How long should you keep this type of 301 redirect? Thanks!

Redirects
If I redirect page A to page B does page A need to exist before Google sees the redirect. Or can I just put up a redirect and delete page A. If the page doesn't need to exist: You have all your redirects in place for a website. You want this website to redirect to another website. You completely delete the website and put up the htaccess, there should be no problem with this, because the redirects are in place correct? Thanks

How should 301 redirects affect Page Authority?
We recently setting up 301 redirects from one of our sites so that the site redirects from the www version to the non-www version for all pages. We want to quantify what we expect to see as results. From what the experts say, we'd expect that the Page Authority of the canonical versio (non-www) will be higher than either of the two separate ones were previously. For instance, if this page - www.website.com/information/ - had a PA of 57 and this one - website.com/information/ - had a PA of 53, some time after the 301 redirects from www to non-www have been put into place, we should see the non-www version of that page move up to some PA about 57. It our thinking correct? How long does it normally take to see a PA update take place in a scenario like this? Thanks, Richard
