Magento Canonical & Default Robots Settings
-
Hello!
I'm working with Magento 1.9 for an eCommerce site with several hundred products. Currently I understand it is best practices to use the Canonical tag, however I also have my default robots set to "Index, Follow".
Will this cause an issue having product pages set to index, follow but also having a canonical tag included?
What are some best practices regarding Magento default robots & canonical tags?
Any help is appreciated.

Thanks for your response Brady. Currently I do have self referencing canonical tags applied. Sounds as if I am alright leaving the default to index, follow, and using WMT to monitor what is being indexed. Thanks again Brady!

Regardless of CMS, all pages will have the follow, index tags. This just means search engines will crawl and index the pages appropriately, as well as "follow" any links on the pages (to other internal pages and external website pages). This is standard.
While e-commerce websites can have some complicated issues in terms of duplicate content, in general it's smart to have self-referencing canonical tags applied to pages you create. This will also help keep things in order and when duplicate content gets created (in e-commerce it's inevitable).
It'll be easier to change the self-referencing tags to the appropriate URL you want indexed in favor of it.

Should I set paramters to maximize the number of producs on all category pages for a retail website?
We have a retail website with over 20K products and do many things to reduce duplicate content including canonicals & parameters. In setting up parameters in Google Search Console, we have told Google to ignore the option to list more products, so the category pages that are indexed have only the default 12 products on them. I don’t want to create too much duplicate product content by doing this, but if there are only 12 products on a category page, the content is very thin Is it better to have as much product content as possible? My question: Should we set the parameter to follow the default (12 products) or should set it to 200 so there are more products associated with the category page?

Can you set objectives for an SEO campaign?
We have been working with a client for 3 months and they've been happy with the progress we've made on their SEO and the resulting increase in rankings, traffic etc. They are renewing their contract for another 6 months but this time want to set some objectives and want us to suggest what those objectives are. Is it possible to set objectives when a great deal of the results can be out of our hands, eg, how Google works, level of interest in the client's products in the target market, whether they take on board our recommendations for changing their website content to get better seo results etc? What would other people be happy being set as their objectives for a campaign?

What does Canonical mean?
Hi, I was wondering what is meant by canonical? I ran a test on my site and in the notices, SEOMOZ came back with a total of 90 canonicals. As far as I can tell, it refers to the preferred page (not really sure what that means though). I thought initially it was talking about duplicate content, but all the pages are totally different. There is no duplicate content on any of he pages that it lists. So I'm not sure how to fix this. Thanks for the help. Don

How woud you deal with Blog TAGS & CATEGORY listings that are marked a 'duplicate content' in SEOmoz campaign reports?
We're seeing "Duplicate Content" warnings / errors in some of our clients' sites for blog / event calendar tags and category listings. For example the link to http://www.aavawhistlerhotel.com/news/?category=1098 provides all event listings tagged to the category "Whistler Events". The Meta Title and Meta Description for the "Whistler Events" category is the same as another other category listing. We use Umbraco, a .NET CMS, and we're working on adding some custom programming within Umbraco to develop a unique Meta Title and Meta Description for each page using the tag and/or category and post date in each Meta field to make it more "unique". But my question is .... in the REAL WORLD will taking the time to create this programming really positively impact our overall site performance? I understand that while Google, BING, etc are constantly tweaking their algorithms as of now having duplicate content primarily means that this content won't get indexed and there won't be any really 'fatal' penalties for having this content on our site. If we don't find a way to generate unique Meta Titles and Meta Descriptions we could 'no-follow' these links (for tag and category pages) or just not use these within our blogs. I am confused about this. Any insight others have about this and recommendations on what action you would take is greatly appreciated.
