Blog SEO strategy
-
Hi Moz community,
we are looking for some advice on our blog/SEO strategy. I hope to find some people who faced similar challenges in the past.
Wishlist currently has one blog (http://blog.enjoywishlist.com/), which has two main focus points. One main focus is to portray and encourage a lifestyle that is conducive with our product offering. The main driver behind the content we post is for SEO optimization for our B2C clients. The other focus for our blog is to target current and potential clients on the B2B side of things. That content is much more driven by a target audience and different topics. It is hard to address two audience in one blog and we are working with the idea of separating the blog into two different host domains. Along with the blogs we will also move the landing pages for B2C and B2B into different domains and link these as appropriate.
The challenge we face is understanding if it would benefit us to host these two blogs on different domains. We are also wondering if it would help our hurt our SEO to take the content related to our corporate blog and move it to the new domain? Advice appreciated!
Thanks
Andreas

Hello Andreas,
alankoan123 made some good points in terms of creating an efficient blog structure. I will address your questions directly:
1) Would it benefit us to host these two blogs on different domains?
From a marketing perspective, yes. Having separate domains that are equally accessible and memorable increases your chances of customer involvement and therefore increases your chances of completing an objective, whether it is traffic, conversions or market penetration. This will require dedication, time and resources, but 2 blogs which speak directly to separate clientele is a good idea if you can't bring them together reasonably easily. As for SEO, this is a tool you would use to help your blogs get found (along with content marketing, among other things). Having 2 blogs will not help your SEO directly. Having a good SEO approach will help your 2 blogs.
- We are also wondering if it would help our hurt our SEO to take the content related to our corporate blog and move it to the new domain?
Depending on who you talk to, it might not help or hurt you. Moving content simply requires a 301 redirect which effectively moves all "link juice" from one domain to another. There are arguments (and some evidence) that shows that small levels of link strength are lost during this process, but it isn't sufficient for you to be concerned about it. A redirect can help you if it makes your brand more visible, enhances customer experience, or otherwise improves your sites trust metrics according to Google.
Long story short, your needs and strategy should determine your next move. If you have the resources to create 2 blogs and move your current blog to them using 301 redirects with minimal cost and effort to yourselves, then it is probably worthwhile. If you are short on resources, perhaps another approach is necessary. Either way, your SEO will not be heavily impacted as long as you follow best practices regarding your 301's and in putting up your blogs.
Cheers and feel free to pick my brain further if you have questions.
Best regards,
Rob

Great questions and not uncommon for a growing company that matches, in your case, service oriented businesses with consumers seeking specific services. Couple thoughts and tips: 1) Make sure your vision and focus are clear -- let those be the drivers of your online marketing decisions -- then use your online strategies and metrics to measure and refine -- for more on this contact me -- I can give you a concrete example and refer you to outstanding people should they be lacking at all; 2) the audience for the blog may be skewed toward consumers vs. business. Check your links and your analytics for clues (if you've done this ad-nauseum disregard); 3) if you have the time/staff/$$ to support a split into B2B and B2C focused content go for it. Just keep in mind that the business drivers need to be clear first. The SEO benefit over time can be significant but is less important than an improved user experience and user interface. Finally, whatever step you take measure your conversion rate. Set up some intermediate conversions and define what each one is and what value it brings.

Concerned over a small video snippet autoplaying on my homepage (Negative page load speed = Negative SEO)
I'm looking at embedding a short 20 second autoplay video to show as the background in a Jumbotron (I'm using Bootstrap) right below my navbar. This looks great and works well for branding ect, however I'm concerned the loading speed will be hit after crossing over from a static image (perhaps 300kb) to a video (perhaps 2MB) which could detrimentally hit my SEO (I also can't help but notice not many SEO minded websites have these autoplaying videos - Perhaps for this reason!) Does anyone have any experience with a similar issue? Is there anything I can do to compress the video right now to a similar file size to an image? I've set it up using a media query to not show on mobile/tablets. Sam

Does anyone has experience with Q&A Sites in terms of SEO value?
I would like to increase mentions to my site and brand. I thought the Q&A sites might be useful here (like Yahoo Answers). Can anyone give me some tips where to go and what to do? I would be very happy about that 🙂

Impact on Global SEO of Losing One Regional Site
Hi, Plans are in place to have an affiliate company take over the marketing, sale, and distribution of our products in one region of the 35 that we currently operate in. The regional site is responsible for 10% of our overall global traffic. 26% of the revenue to that specific site comes from organic search traffic. The question is whether the loss of this traffic and these pages will have any negative impact on our global SEO status?

Can creating a subfolder and seperate domain blog build external links?
So I am currently going through the creation of a blog with a client that has a company that sells tennis equipment. I have talked to their development team, who is a third-party ecommerce platform, and come up with an idea to create an sub-folder (domain.com/blog) with an article page using their existing framework that would feature full articles in a blog format. Then I would create multiple blogs for them using tumblr and wordpress with their company name and a few with unique names targeted to their niche. These would feature snippets of the content taken from their article page (domain.com/blog) with some responses or reviews on the full articles to further their outreach and then link to the main articles on their article page. These snippets would be divided up amongst the blogs and posted on different days of the week to divide the traffic. Each blog will feature fresh content and focus on a rotating schedule of the latest videos, re-blogs, memes, photos, highlights, scores, upcoming tournament reviews, etc. I will set each one up to rotate through these different topics on different days and times to create a steady stream of traffic. I want to make sure that I stress the fact that I wont be stuffing the unique blogs with links only to the clients company store, I will be making sure to keep it to an amount that isn't spam worthy. Now if these blogs feature rich content including the snippets of the articles from my sub-folder page (domain.com/blog) will these blogs pass link juice to the blog set up on my sub-folder? Also is this a good way to ensure brand awareness and create external links without damaging their reputation? Are there other risks that people have encountered by doing something similar? Please share your experiences so I can make an educated decision.

Use blog.domain.com or socialbrand.com?
I've got a little bit of a dilemma. A company I'm working for has an ecommerce site that is moving to Volusion. It is impossible to add "domain.com/blog" so I am forced to use a subdomain in order to keep consistency. We are starting a push in Social media and have secured shorter handles for the brand to use on the different networks. One of the main goals originally for developing a blog is to build trust but since the domain names are so big (26 characters) and the ecommerce sites already have a good amount of trust building factors in them I am beginning to question my original plan. My question is this: If I go with a shorter brand recognized domain name to develop the blog on which is different than the ecommerce domain (keyword matched) will I loose too much trust and ranking opportunity because of the difference in domains. I know there isn't a golden bullet for this question but i would love to get you your take on it.

Russian and Arabic SEO and Translation
Hi guys, We've a small 15 page site in English for renting out our own boat to tourists which seems to be especially popular with Russian and Arab visitors, so they are our priority languages for translation right now. We would like to translate our site into a condensed single page summary for each language of the services we offer for now and trying to make it rank in Russian/Arab serarch engines. I do some seo in English on our site and it's starting to rank well, but that's my only language, so I would definitely need to hire someone to do it for us in Russian and Arabic translation and related keyword phrases and how to rank in the search engines those countries most use etc. Can you recommend any companies for doing this russian-seo or arabic-seo stuff? Or any other advice.. Thanks!
