Higher PA and DA but lower ranking?
-
I am having problem with my product pages not ranking as high as I would expect them to be.

This is an example. The fact that competitor C is on position 4 stupifies me. At what areas should I be looking?

I agree with the sentiment here, Moosa, but know that PA and DA do take link quality into account, and they won't necessarily go up when you get new links. There's actually a huge number of factors that goes into calculating those metrics. (Check out our overview of Page Authority here, and of Domain Authority here.)
For example, both metrics consider MozTrust, which measures the inherent "trust value" of linking sites. So to use a pretty simple scenario, if you gain a few links from less-trusted (but not necessarily bad) sites, and lose one link from a very high-trust site, you may actually see PA and DA decrease.
It's not unheard of for a high-trust site to go offline and drop the DA and PA of any sites it had linked to, as well as sites those sites link to. That's one of the reasons that we generally recommend using DA and PA to benchmark yourself against your competitors rather than as an absolute measure of your "rankability." Make sense?
Just wanted to set the record straight.

I'm fully agree with Moosa and he explained very welll.
Thanks

PA and DA might indicate how many links are pointing back to your website but this is not the only thing that is important to consider when plan ranking better in SERPs from the targeted key phrases.
Again, DA increases when links pointing to your website increases but it does not measure quality of link and how relevant it is to your website. Other things you should consider including is quality of content on the website, internal linking, how powerful the link is and few more.
There are times when you actually deserve better ranking but some websites are outranking you using tactics that are prohibited by Google. In that case you can report them to Google or wait for the update as these things usually cutoff as soon as the Google launches the algo update.
Hope this helps!

Hi Entertainment,
I am sharing an old post & an article by Matt some quotes from moz staff & SEO Expert on this.
http://moz.com/blog/going-beyond-moz-metrics-to-answer-why-is-this-site-outranking-me
http://moz.com/community/q/high-da-pa-and-a-grade-at-page-level-not-ranking-in-serp-why
Keri Morgret said that on the same issue "Google uses their own algorithm, and we haven't been able to convince them to use Moz Metrics for ranking or to give us access to an API for their algorithm."
Hope it helps.
Thanks

Try getting back to the basics. Create an audit for the website, for the webpages that you'd like to rank for. Check for accessibility.
For example on one of our projects a simple development error caused our new content to be hidden from search engines (a simple content tab that had an issue with Javascript).
Sometimes getting back to the basics and creating an auditing for our website could highlight issues that stop us from ranking on top 10 spots.

Thanks Keszi. Yes it's not a ranking guarantee (as nothing is). It just feels like we're doing something horribly wrong. We write unique texts for our products, we get an A grading in the on-page grader, we have rich content on the page....

Domain Authority (DA) - indicates how likely a domain is to rank based on how authoritative search engines consider it to be based on its backlink profile.
Page Authority (PA) - indicates how likely a page is to rank based on how authoritative search engines consider it to be because of which sites link to it
I have quoted these from the Moz Glossary.
It is important to highlight the usage of the word Likely! Having higher DA or PA doesn't necessary mean, that you are going to outrank a specific website. DA and PA are mostly based upon the links that a specific website/webpage get. (at least this is how I look at it).
There are so many other things that could influence a webpage's rankings.
I hope it helped,
Keszi

Impact of number of outgoing links on Page Rank of an optimized page?
What is the current best practice on preferred number of outbound links on a page you are trying to rank with: According to online resources form a pure page rank perspective a high number of outbound follow links can have a negative impact not only on child pages but also the page itself

http://pr.efactory.de/e-outbound-links.shtml Other resources suggest that particularly placing high quality outbound links on a page (nofollow) increases the trust and authority of a page Are there any other elements to keep in mind? Is the best practice to avoid any follow links on a page you want to rank well in Google for? Thanks /T0 -
Can soft 404's hurt my rankings?
This post mainly pertains to soft 404's but I recently dropped a few ranks in my main keyword which I have maintained prior to this my better rank for well over 2 years. I participate in NO BLACKHAT and obtain links naturally. I want to describe a few issues that happened prior to my ranking dropping and see what you guys think. I started to receive about a week prior to my ranks dropping DNS issues with GWT. It was weird because when I would use Goole Fetch on those pages they would return just fine so I was not sure what was happening there. I use Google page speed server which did in fact decrease my load time (YEAH!!) so that was cool. About 1 week prior to my rankings dropping I enabled godaddy's Website Accelerator as well thinking that could help even more. Because of this I thought maybe this had something to do with my DNS issues with Google so I decided to turn off my website accelerator with Godaddy and just leave my Google pagespeed service on. I figure I don't need 2 of them anyways IMO. Also at the same time I started to receive a ton (31,000+) html errors with duplicate metadescriptions and titles. I discovered I had an error with my code which was displaying 2 different sets of descriptions and titles for each of these pages. I since then have fixed the issue and waiting for Google to index those pages. Here is were I think I might have been hurting from the drop in rankings. Some months ago (maybe 2) I decided to redirect my 404's to my homepage. Yes I know this is not good now and I have created a proper 404 page which returns the 404 code. I recently started getting a ton of Soft 404 errors in GWT which is what brought my attention to this issue. My question is, could my action of redirecting my users to my homepage as a 404 which obviously was returning a 200 on a page that did not exist be possibly the culprit to my ranks dropping?

Can Rankings in Google differ so much from computer to computer.
I was telling my friend via facebook to go on my website, I told him to search 'nightlife forum' in google. To which, I believed it was 11th, top of second page. On his computer, its currently ranking at 1st place is it possible to have a difference of 10 places? even though he lives in the same city as me. Would be good to see what it ranks on your computers too google "nightlife forum" look for www.talknightlife.co.uk (don't get confused with the .COM one out there) Cheers Guys

Can Page Authority of a site be higher than its Domain Authority?
I own a website called Takeyourtips.com. While doing a search no Google, I found that the page authority of the home page (31) is higher than the domain authority (23). I was wondering if it's really possible because my understanding was page authority of a page is determined by its domain authority. Therefore, it the domain authority of a website is 23, none of its page could have a higher page authority. Plus, upon consulting an SEO expert, I was told that neither Domain Authority or Page Authority of a page carries any importance as far as higher ranking of a website is concerned. Is this true? Thanks in advance for the answers. Cheers, Sushant large

Google Ranking Dropped
Hi We launched a new website on the12th Feb 2012, it appeared on google page one for the search term "compare travel insurance" . Last week it changed ranking to page 49 of google ranking. my site is www.1234compare1234travel1234insurance1234ireland1234.com Take out the 1234 for my site address, some people have mentioned that it was honeymooned to page 1 due to being a new site with new content. Can anyone tell me if it looks as if I've done something wrong and been penalised by google? If not are there any SEO advice I could use to improve ranking? All comments and advice appreciated. Regards Paul

Are Forum Links To Website Causing Rankings To Drop ?
For many years our top keywords hve ranked in top 5. Usually top 3 for a few in particular. The last few months those particular keywords have dropped to 25 +. Our other rankings are doing pretty decent and are remaiing the same. We are members of about 6 forums since they relate to our website and sometime we have contests on them. I do know that the forums are based on those particular keywords and are linking to our website, as well as other forum members linking to us. Each forum has roughly 300 links to our website. It does not seem as if our competitors are affected by this, as they are members of the forums as well. What could be causing this for these certain keywords? If those forums were affected by Google's new algorythm would this have an affect on our website?
