Should we remove category paths for better SEO?
-
We're looking to build some serious content and capitalise on long-tail keyword traffic for our sub-category pages, example for targeted keyword "designer dining tables".
Example of current link: www.website.com/designer-furniture/designer-dining-tables.html
Would removing the category paths help?
Example result - www.website.com/designer-dining-tables
More user friendly URLs and better for SEO would you suggest?
The only problem is, if we removed the paths would this have a hit on our traffic?
Any advice would be much appreciated. We are using Magento platform.

Hi Matt,
This answers my question perfectly. Everything we sell is 'designer goods' including tables, wardrobes, sideboards etc you name it.
My only concern was to have the word 'designer' too many times in the URL as it would look a little spammy, but as you described we can just keep the word 'designer' for the parent page and leave it out for the sub-categories.
We used SEM Rush and noticed a competitor doing really well in the SERPs and they have all their category path URLs removed so I was just curious if this had an impact on SEO, as the URLs looks short and user friendly.

This answer would depend on a few things. Single or multiple designer furniture offerings? How much traffic do you currently generate to those pages? What's the overall website strategy (ecommerce? blog?). In my opinion, removing the category page (/designer-future/) would really only make sense if "designer dining tables" was the ONLY product your website offered. If that was the case, then I'd imagine you'd have similar content on both your category & sub-category pages thus resulting in potential duplicate content issues & an overall confusing UX.
Conversely, if you have more than 1 sub-category (ie designer chairs, couches, entertainment centers, etc) then I would advise keeping your current url structure. Targeting long-tail keywords at a sub-category level could help in building the authority of the category page (assuming proper internal linking is in place). What you may find is that the more you target "designer dining tables", the more Google thinks your site must be about designer furniture and thus resulting in potential ranking improvements for your category page, designer furniture. Just a personal preference, I would drop "designer" from the sub-category page as it's inferred by the parent page. I guess it just depends if you want a more keyword heavy url, or a cleaner, shorter url. Either one is fine. For tips on URL Best Practices, check out this article by Rand:

Hi Josh
Do not remove categories. This helps give your website a hierarchy and helps crawlers understand how your website is laid out. It is also great for breadcrumbs and helping users understand exactly where they are in the site. If your website creates dynamic URLs, look into canonical tags.
Here are some great resources:
URLs Best Practices (Moz)
Information Architecture for SEO (Moz)
Internal Links (Moz)To me, having categories in the URL are very important for many reasons. Make sure you discuss with your team and think about users/crawlers. It helps a lot to give your website a structure and not make it seems super flat.
It also helps with Sitelinks and it's search box!
Hope this helps! Good luck!

Do long UTM codes hurt SEO?
Since most UTM codes/URLs are longer than 70ish characters, is this hurting my SEO? If it is, how can I solve the problem while still using a UTM code? Thanks!

What to do about this subdomain for SEO?
This is a bit of an unusual structure and I'm having difficulty explaining the question so pardon my being a 'noob', haha. The website I'm working on has some content under Forums that is hosted on another domain. The main website is https://yournorthside.org.au/ and if you select under the main Nav > Forums > Lived Experience it will take you to https://yournorthside.saneforums.org/t5/Lived-Experience-Forum/ct-p/lived-experience-forum. So it's as if it's a subdomain. (notice even the appearance of the main menu changes, weird) Apparently, saneforums.org has a requirement for that content to be on that subdomain. So therefore it's not part of my sitemap and now crawled or indexed. My question is is this structure okay? What are the implications for SEO? Should I be looking to implement some type of no follow link or something? Or is it actually beneficial in terms of all their content gives us 'link juice'? Can you link me to any resources / articles that give further insight?

Change category of a post
Hi, Finally I decide to renovate my site structure, but I have a question, if I have an old post and I change its category there is some SEO problem? The post permalink is "www.sitename.com/namepost". Last question, it's better to have one category for post or more than one category for post? Thank You

Express js and SEO?
Hi fellow Mozzers, I have been tasked with providing some SEO recommendations for a website that is to be built using express.js and Angular. I wondered whether anyone has had any experience in such a framework? On checking a website built in this and viewing as a GoogleBot etc using the following tools it appears as though most of the content is invisible: http://www.webconfs.com/search-engine-spider-simulator.php http://www.browseo.net/ Obviously this is a huge issue and wonder if there are any workarounds, or reccomendations to assist (even if means moving away from this - would love to hear about it)

How to target similar keywords for Main Category / Sub Categories?
Hi all, This is from an on-site point of view for an ecommerce site - Just looking for a bit of advice about how i can create different pages for similar keywords, by this i mean lets say i have 4 categories: Main Category = High Definition Sub Cat 1 = High Definition Camera Sub Cat 2 = High Definition Recorder Sub Cat 3 = High Definition Kits First lets focus on the Main Category: Would you not want to mention Camera / recorder / kits in any of the main category title / meta tags / h tags etc? From a navigation point of view its impossible not to have those words mentioned there, and from a product point of view obviously the "cameras" are going to be on the main category page also... Obviously we can create some written content also, which i presume again would be best not to mention cameras / recorders / kits? OR would it be wise to mention them, but link to those pages? NOW if we look at a Sub Category - Say 1 (Camera) Now obviously everywhere we type in "high definition camera" we are typeing in the keyword for the main category, so is there anyway to limit the effect of this, so that a sub category wouldnt rank above a main category for its keyword... for example if we were to make sure any time the word "high definition" is mentioned in title / meta / h tags, or any specific written content that the word "camera" is directly after it... Also, perhaps in the content of all three sub categories make sure 1 (or would you advise more) link to the main category using keyword "high definition"? Any advice on the above would be greatly appreciated... Also bare in mind i am talking about on site only, i'm just thinking from a creating the page point of view, i know we can try and force the issue afterwards with a few backlinks etc.. On a different note, a simple question... When you do a site:mysite.com search in google... is the list google then presents you in order of how "important" googls see's the pages on that site? Or is it just hompage then random? thanks James
