Help identifying cause for total rank loss

Hello,
Last week I noticed one of my pages decreased in rank for a particular query from #8 to #13. Although I had recently made a few minor edits to the page (added an introductory paragraph and left-column promo to increase word count), I thought the reason for the decrease was due to a few newly ranked pages that I hadn't seen before.
In an attempt to regain my original position, I tried to optimize the meta title for the singular form of the word. After making this change, I fetched and rendered the page as Google (status = partial) and submitted the page for indexing (URL only, not including on-page links). Almost immediately after submitting, the page dropped from #13 out of the top 50.
I've since changed the meta title back to what it was originally and let Google crawl and index the page on its own, but the page is still not in the top 50. Could the addition of the page description and left column promos tipped the scales of keyword stuffing? If I change everything back to the way it was originally, is it reasonable to think I should regain my original position below the new pages? Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

I'll certainly bring it up. Maybe we can use the general concept and agree on a page title that accomplishes the same goal without sacrificing brand consistency.

That's a very interesting approach! I like the idea, but although it may be effective in gaining clicks and thus positively impacting our rank, our organization is very focused on maintaining a high level of professionalism, so informal title tags may not be suitable for us. I appreciate the suggestion, though!

We don't even think about singular or plural any more when writing title tags.
Here is a suggestion. When you visit a news site and see the content promotion ads from Taboola, Outbrain and others, read their captions. Those captions are designed to elicit clicks often to the point of being spammy, suggestive, explicit or vulgar. The people who write those title tags are experts. They know how to get the clicks and getting the clicks, I believe, is a huge ranking factor in the organic SERPs.
I have learned a lot from them and although I really dislike a lot of their ads they can give you an education. So, if I was selling foam rollers, I might consider title tags like...
Foam Rollers - Get yo' bones straight
Foam Rollers for when you back is out of whack !
Those are just very quick efforts and you can certainly do better because you know the product and how people use it. If there was a lot of money to be made selling foam rollers I would be spending a LOT of time to get a great title tag that makes people want to click into your webpage.

Thanks for answering. Luckily we have other pages that rank on page 2 for that term. They are not really optimized for that keyword, but I'm reluctant to make any changes at this point!
Focusing on a readable message makes the most logical sense. We second-guessed this strategy based on the decreasing rank and thought we might be losing out by not including the singular form of the word, which is searched about 10 times more often than the plural.

I can't give you a confident answer. I know of situations where people made a lot of title tag changes in a short amount of time and the pages went deep into the SERPs and did not recover to any reasonable rankings for a long time.
At our office we rarely tweak title tags, when we do, we enter the details into our SEO log and wait a month or more before trying something new. Also, when we write title tags today we focus on a very readable message that is enticing instead of gunning keywords as was common a few years back.

Thank you for the quick reply! I am actually getting my ranking from a keyword tracker I have configured in Moz as I realize performing a search would yield inaccurate results from personalized search.
As for the sitemap, it has been properly submitted and is updated on the first of each month. Canonical tags are also set up correctly and have not been recently modified.
I'll take a look at some of the other links to see if I can find any helpful information there.

Thanks for the reply. I thought the same thing about an adjustment to the title tag making a small difference. That is why I was so surprised when the page dropped in rank so significantly. Unfortunately the multiple changes to the page make it impossible to isolate the detrimental factor, but if I revert all of the changes, is it reasonable to think the page would return to a similar position next time it is indexed?

You made a number of changes in a very short time. Keep in mind that google has lots of different servers, delivering SERPs pulled out of different data bases, with experimental algos running all of the time, new data going in, old data going out, and normal daily flux overprinting all of that.
To determine what is really happening, make one change and wait at least a couple of weeks before you make any judgement.
Also, for a query like "foam roller" there is going to be some competition, enough that a small tweak to a title tag is unlikely to make a huge difference.
If you change "Foam Rollers | OPTP" to "Foam Roller | Shop Premium Foam Rollers | OPTP".... that is a really small tweak that does nothing but make it a little repetitive. I would, instead go for something that.....
*** adds a value proposition like "free shipping"
*** elicits clicks such as... "over 100 varieties"
*** or broadens your keyword reach such as.... "for therapy and massage"..... "for painting and texture finishing"... depending upon what type of rollers you sell.

Hi there
One of the best ways to track your positions is to pay attention to your Average Position in Google Webmaster Tools. Reason being, with Google Personalized Search, the rankings you see while doing a search are going to be completely different than the search I would do. You can learn more about personalized search from this Whiteboard Friday. What Google Webmaster Tools does here is takes keywords and queries across multiple factors (location, device, browsing/search history, etc), and returns an average position for your site.
You can also look into Moz Keyword Tracking and SEMRush.
Before you change things, check the resources you have to see if in fact you are really losing positions, or if it's just a fluctuation.
A couple of suggestions I do have for you:
Product Schema.org
Check your sitemap and make sure it's properly submitted to Google and Bing Webmaster Tools I would also check your URL structures and canonical tags Check your information architecture

How did I get over 1000 backlinks in less then a month? help?
Hi Guys I'm a newbie and just started my website, im wondering if im reading this correctly, i use a tool called my seo tools and its telling me my website zenory.co.nz has over 1600 backlinks, this is scary since the site is only 5months old and i didn't see this till at least today and i check my sites backlinks on a regular basis. Please Please Please help (not ranking any more)..
my website is: www.tcclinic.com it was a static website which was ranking well. total about 400 pages. I also had my blog hosted on another domain (www.shopify.com) about 800 pages. I was told if I bring the blog to my domain, then I will have more content on my site and will rank even better, and also was advised to switch to WordPress. so about two weeks ago I did the following changes: I moved the site and blogs to my domain (tcclinic.com). and switch to WordPress. total of 1200 pages Since it was changing to WordPress all the URLs was changed and named differently. I did 301 redirect for all the pages. all the URLs now contains "toronto-cosmetic-clinic" which is the name of my clinic example: www.tcclinic.com/toronto-cosmetic-clinic-liposuction-surgery/ www.tcclinic.com/toronto-cosmetic-clinic-tummy-tuck/ most of my pages are indexed by google now BUT Now as the result I am not ranking anywhere in first 5 to 6 pages. I am not sure what is happening. have I been hit by a penguin, panda or any other black and white animal ? if this is the case how do I know this happened. Haveing "toronto-cosmetic-clinic" in all the URLs is considered as keyword stuffing ? moving 800 pages of blog to my domain caused it ? (blogs are removed from shopify.com) Is it just the matter of time to come back to the first page? Please let me know what you think.... Thank you

Site dropping in rank even through there are more backlinks being added
Hello, One of my client's sites is ranking lower than he should. This happened when we took off backlinks (20 little blogs, several site-wide paid links. It really dropped the site, but it had to be done. Since then we've increased his # of root domains by 10% through white hat link building in his non-competitive niche, and rankings are still poor. I know that's not much in the way of added backlink value, but we're working on it. My question is, how have the recent (and coming) updates possibly effected us. We want to take the remaining problem areas off right away, but another drop in traffic is not a good idea. Even though the blogs (see below) have no backlinks of themselves, they cause drops when taken off) He still has -20 little blog backlinks w/ a quarter of them being exact match anchor text.

Main keyword decline in SERPs ranking :-(
Hi Moz, My very humble attempts at SEO has been doing very well for over a year with the keyword phrase 'vintage chanel bags'. Recently, about 3-4 months ago I noticed it dropped from rank 1 to rank 5. I've slowly but steadily been building up more social marketing interaction (Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram mostly), brand awareness in company is increasing more searches for 'Vintage Heirloom', great in-links from reputable companies & bloggers. What I'm confused about is that one of our competitors Rewindvintage now appears as no.1 for this keyword but tracking with Moz every metric we outperform them on, namely domain authority & Page Authority. I have noticed they have 4 anchor text links (dubious quality wordpress comments), with the anchor term vintage chanel bags and we have none despite ranking no. 1 for so long?? I'm trying to use the Moz science here, just a bit confused. Any help, insights, similar experience would be much appreciated. I engage only in white hat and look for slow & honest SEO growth (as far as I'm aware ! ). Thanks for looking Kevin

Please Help- Confusion about how to Avoid Keyword Self-Cannibalization and Keyword Stuffing
I am pretty much a rookie when it comes to the SEO game and to be completely honest SEO is really confusing. I just recently started using MOZ and I was looking at my On-Page report and I saw that I needed to correct some “Avoid Keyword Self-Cannibalization” errors. So I looked at the error and the fix. Here is what MOZ gave me. Cannibalizing link "How to make a fake diploma", "How to get a fake diploma", "Making a Fake High School Diploma", "Fake Diploma Template", and "Framing your fake diploma" Explanation It's a best practice in SEO to target each keyword with a single page on your site (sometimes two if you've already achieved high rankings and are seeking a second, indented listing). To prevent engines from potentially seeing a signal that this page is not the intended ranking target and creating additional competition for your page, we suggest staying away from linking internally to another page with the target keyword(s) as the exact anchor text. Note that using modified versions is sometimes fine (for example, if this page targeted the word 'elephants', using 'baby elephants' in anchor text would be just fine). Recommendation Unless there is intent to rank multiple pages for the target keyword, it may be wise to modify the anchor text of this link so it is not an exact match. This error is for my Hompage(http://www.fake-diploma.com) for the keyword Fake Diploma. My understanding is that for Self-Cannibalization to occur I would have to have a link on this page pointing to another page using "Fake Diploma" as my anchor text since I want this page to rank for Fake Diploma. To me theses are separate longtail keywords. While they do include Fake Diploma in them I thought theses were fine because they are not an Exact Match to each other nor are they an Exact Match to “Fake Diploma”. Am I wrong about this? Secondly I reached out on another Forum trying to get a better understanding of this and just got even more confused. I was told that I am also Keyword Stuffing and could be penalized. They said because I have Fake Diploma in most of my article titles that I am Stuffing Fake Diploma. I am in a Niche Market and of course most of my titles include Fake Diploma because that is what my entire site is about. I used the Google Keyword Tool and searched Fake Diploma and it gave me a list of about 79 related keywords like: Make a Fake Diploma Online

Fake Diploma Software This is just a few of the many that I have. I thought the best way to rank for a keyword was to actually write a post about that Keyword and use it as the title of the article. I am not over using the Keyword in the actual article and I maybe have a Keyword density of about 2-5%. I thought Keyword Stuffing was where you actually used the Keyword like 50 times and also just added random Keywords to the article that did not belong. Will cleaning up old pr articles help serps?
For a few years we published articles with anchor text backlinks to about 10 different article submission sites. Each article was modified to create similar different articles. We have about 50 completely unique articles. This worked really well for our serps until google panda & penguin updates. I am looking for advice on whether I should have a major clean up of the published articles and if so should I be deleting them, removing or renaming anchor text backlinks? Any advice on what strategy would work best would be appreciated as I don't want to start deleting backlinks and making it worse. We used to enjoy position 1 but are now at 12-15 so have least most of our traffic.

Can someone explain how a site with no DA, links or MozTrust, MozRank can rank #1 in the SERPs?
I do SEO for a legal site in the UK and one of the keywords I'm targeting is 'Criminal Defence Solicitors'. If you search this term in Google.co.uk this site comes top www.cdsolicitors.co.uk, yet in my mozbar it has 0 links, 0 DA etc, I noticed it top a few weeks ago and thought something spammy was going on; I thought if I was patient, Google would remove it, however it still hasn't. Can someone explain how it is top in the SERPs? I've never seen this before. thanks
