What Makes A 'Natural Link Profile'?
-
I find it hard to recognize unnatural link patterns when the links to my site are so familiar. It can be hard to see the wood for the trees! How many links from one site is too many? Does it depend on the size of the site? Thanks for your advice on this.
-
Thanks for your help everyone, you have answered my question very thoroughly!
-
I know, but that all comes down to Google being able to find them. Poor links they can identify more readily than something that has been bought on a trusted site (and there are a lot).
You should take a look through the finance market - I don't bother with that now because in order to compete, you should see how much link buying goes on! The same with a few other cut-throat industries too.

I'm trying to address the above-board methods. Can you buy links without getting caught? Sure. But why do you think Google built Penguin in the first place? And what's to say they won't roll out something in the future that can catch them more readily?
nofollow is the only safe route with paid links. Anything else is playing with fire.
-
Let's start with the first important question: Did I pay for this link? If the answer is "Yes", then do they nofollow the link? If no, you need to either get it removed or make sure they nofollow it.
That isn't actually correct. A lot of link buying goes on with the big names, but there is no way for Google to find this out. Link buying does have it's place, but must be done very carefully.
If you were buying a link on a spammy blog site though, then you would hope someone wouldn't go there in the first place - but people do. These are the sites that Google can be aware of. Before anyone proceeds down this line, you would need to check the site out, traffic, look if it has been penalised, etc.
I'm not justifying the practice of buying links (as this this against Google TOS), but it happens. If you get found out, expect a big hit.

So now we've gotten the obvious ones out of the way. Now... how to spot the unnatural links. A link can be unnatural if
- It shares specific keyword rich words with other links. For example you have 200 sites that link to you saying "Buy widgets now"
- The sites are low quality. Blogs with 1-3 posts that look abandoned after posting content that reads like an ad for you. Article writing sites.
- The site has no logical relation to your site whatsoever. Tire stores linking to doll stores doesn't make sense.
- There's a network of these links. If you've not gotten the hint from the previous two, look for patterns that stick out to you.
- There's little diversity. You have lots of links from very few sites.
So how to spot them? I'd cross-reference AHrefs with Open Site Explorer and look at keyword text and, in OSE, look at the strength of the site (PA/DA columns).
Lastly, what to do about them? If you think there's something that is actively hurting you then slowly begin to chip away at the links either by requesting removal or disavow. but remember that if you don't do this without a plan you WILL hurt your site.

In terms of a neutral link profile, it needs to, above everything else, appear natural. If your link profile consisted of nothing but dofollow links, then this could be considered unnatural.
There is no limit to the number of links that denote something odd, per se, but you must step back and look at it from Google's eyes. Would they want to see 400 article links all coming from submissions at the same site? Would this suggest article spam? Are these articles each going to be high quality?
It is much more natural to have a few links from a site, but if someone is genuinely seeding all of your content, then I would expect this to be, at worst case, a neutral signal to Google. They will know how good the articles are, how often they are shared, who is posting them, etc.
Also, keep your anchor text neutral / clean. Don't over-optimise it as this will undoubtedly bring problems with it.
I don't really like plugging my own site, but have a read of this: http://bit.ly/1LyeiAh. You may get some additional info there.

AllTop Linking Me to Other Sites Feeds, Webmasters Reporting Lots of Broken Links
I submitted my blog to All Top awhile ago and something seems to be wrong with their feed. They're sending people to mysite.com/truth-o-meter.com/this-is-a-post. It's not just truth-o-meter either. I'm getting links that are supposed to go to all kinds of political blogs. As a result, I'm getting a ton of broken links reported on Google Webmasters. I couldn't find any real support option on alltop.com, and when I log in, there are no sites for me to manage. Instead, I resubmitted the site with the correct feed address and in the comments, I mentioned the problem. All I got was a message saying the site was rejected. I believe because I already added the site. But I'm thinking they didn't pay attention to the comments. (In fact the message may have gone through an auto-filter considering how quickly it was rejected.) Is there a way to solve this? Is this a situation in which I would use the disavow tool? If All Top continues to create bad links, how do I stop the issue once and for all? Thanks!

Links from sites with iffy link profiles?
So the site http://www.cadenas.de/ appears to have good decent scores from the various Moz ranks, but when I check out the site in OSE there are a lot of really sketchy links that jump out, online pharmacy/drug type links. I should also add that the negative links are seemingly going to a weird blog deep in the site and only appear when I select all links to the root domain in OSE. Everything about the site appears very legitimate except for the link profile which has me nervous. Would you guys pursue a link from this site?

Links from my Own Blog to my Own Website and Link Scheme
Hi There, I use my own blog to give advices and offer information related to my business service. Of course in terms of SEO my blog is useful not only to expand my brand presence but also to acquire long-tail traffic. I use to insert a maximum of one link with a relative matching anchor text in every article of my blog pointing to my own webpage. Said that, the questions are as follows: Am I involuntarily participating in a Link Scheme with my blog? And If so, how many links can I send to my own webpage ? Shall I limit the number of links to a minimum? Thanks a lot for your advices.

I have well over 110 identical backlinks of widely varying quality - is it worth taking the page they're linking to down?
The site on which I'm working has been experiencing a month-to-month decline since the Panda and Penguin updates - I didn't get an unnatural links notification, but have clearly fallen off the face of Google with many of the more important rankings. After running a scan on my backlinks, I found over 110 identical backlinks (it looks like the same medical definition and my website is listed in the endnotes as a source - just the URL, not anchor text), some from reputable websites with high pageranks and others that look very 'spammy.' We've redesigned the architecture of the site, so the actual link itself has a 301 redirect on it, but I'm just wondering exactly how much of a liability is it to have these links out there? I'm guessing it's an all or nothing kind of thing given the identical content on each page - on one hand, I'm pretty frantic to get to the root of the Google penalties and get back in their good graces. On the other hand, I don't want to kill the site completely by going after a set of valuable links. Has anyone dealt with this before?

What is the difference between external followed links and internal followed links.
I have almost 3,000 external links followed and only a tiny amount of internal followed links. My website is doing really badly on google at the mo. I am also an SEO beginner and learning new stuff every day, but am not sure exactly what the difference is! Thanks!

What's the typical response time to link building email requests?
Hello Forum, We're about to embark on a link building campaign and were curious about how long, on average, it takes to get a response to an email requesting links to our page. We're trying to come up with a timeline estimate for our campaign. Thanks

Dirty Link Profile - Suggestions?
Ok, so I was just hired to do SEO for a company and so I did a backlink analysis. As it turns out, they've got a pretty dirty link profile - footer links, white on white links, unrelated links, tiny font links, links from penalized sites, hardly any branded links... you get it. I was thinking about taking the worst of the worst links, removing them and leaving the rest, just to clean it up a little. I don't want them to get penalized.... but... I don't want their rankings to drop either. Think I should leave them all and just start building relevant, branded links? OR Clean up the whole link profile? OR Just clean it up a little?
