Why is content getting longer?
-
I find it odd that with the way life is today -- the gotta-have-it-now, instant gratification, can't hold someone's attention span for longer than 3 seconds -- why Google is wanting content to be REALLY long?? I've read articles saying content should be as long as 2,000 words per page. This just seems nuts to me. No one wants to read anymore. Look at how short Twitter posts are and how videos are so prevalent now. Any thoughts?
-
Yes I realize tweets cannot be compared to blogs. I was just trying to point out how people love short content.
-
I hate averages! A landing page should always be dedicated to fulfilling the needs of the visitors. If the visitor requires more information, add it in via inverted pyramid.
-
Content should be as long or short as it needs to be. Don't limit yourself by trying to hit a specific number of words.
-
I think all of that research should be taken with a grain of salt since it's talking in averages while what works is going to vary from one industry or niche to the next. That said, though, if your content is well-researched, well-written and thorough, length will often come naturally. Your readers are going to get pulled in (instant gratification culture be damned) and Google's quality algos are going to understand that you really know what you're talking about, and that's a powerful combo.

Hey Deedra,
Google doesn't want content to be long.. It just wants fresh, unique and meaningful content.
As far as the content length is concerned, I think it depends on the industry mainly. Like in Finance and legal industries, the average content length is around 1000+ words because of the need. If you want someone to read your content is because you're offering something that they need. If you can sum up all your thoughts and findings in less content with the aid of graphics and videos, go ahead! You don't need to write 2000 words.
As per the SEO perspective, it's been observed that people most likely link long posts as they reflects the in-depthness and authority.
By the way, you cannot compare 140 words tweet with blogs

What to do with outdated and irrelevant content on a website?
Hi everyone, On our corporate website we have a blog where we publish articles which are directly related to our company (house heating systems and gas cylinders) and some articles which are completely irrelevant to our core business, but which might be of interest to our potential clients. Recently I've been told that it is not a good idea to include these not directly related posts to our core business, because Google might be somewhat confused at to what our core business is all about. I was advised to research this topic and think of completely removing blog posts that are irrelevant to our core business from our blog. By removing I mean completely removing pages and setting a 410 status to tell Google that it is not a 404 error but that these pages were intentionally removed. I would like to hear some independent advice from Moz community as to what I should do? Thank you very much in advance.

Duplicate Blog Content
Hey Mozzers! I have a client who is a dentist, with multiple offices, and wants to use an identical blog post (including images, alt text, text, tags, everything pretty much) from one of his office's website on his other office's website to save time and mimic the success of the original content for his other office. Everything I've researched says this is a HUGE no-no, but I'd love to hear if anyone else has tried to do something like this and if they were successful in doing so (implementing rel=cannonical or 301?). Also, if he is the owner of both sites and they both receive low traffic will Google even notice? My biggest worry is that if I did post the content on his other site, identically, that it would dilute the visibility of the original post, which has and is continuing to surpass our organic search goals... The main goal though, is to drive traffic to BOTH sites via organic search using the same content. Would love to hear everyone's opinions if this is possible or unrealistic... Thanks! -D

What are the best widgets to use on Wordpress? And what is most useful on Wordpress for content syndication?
We are in the process of researching the best plugins and widgets for our clients' blogs. It appears that SEO by Yoast is most popular for 2013 so far. Any recommendations on which widgets we should be using or plugins for content syndication? If we use something like the Jetpack plugin, would this do the trick?

Content Estimates
Are there any SEO Content writers that can create several pages for me on a post- graduate level for a target audience of physicians? Writing should be informative regarding our company and also optimized for keywords. I only have one quote so far from a company outside of SEOMoz and I was hoping to get someone on this site that had some experience in this area. Thank you, Utah Tiger

Duplicate content across multiple e-commerce sites
Hi, This may have been discussed here before though I couldn't find a definitive answer, but I was wondering what the best practice for having multiple e-commerce sites with some of the same products on both is. If Site A has 200 products, and Site B has 300 products, and 50 overlap, do they absolutely have to have unique product descriptions? The descriptions have already been rewritten to be different from the manufacturer's description, but do they need to be changed again? Or should the 50 products only be listed on one site or the other? Sites like csnstores.com seem to have the same descriptions as the subsidiary sites that they have, but maybe they have different sidebars/footers/etc which make the content considered original?
