Website not ranking
-
Firstly, apologies for the long winded question. I'm 'newish' to SEO
We have a website built on Magento , www.excelclothing.com
We have been online for 5 years and had reasonable success. Having used a few SEO companies in the past we found ourselves under a 'partial manual penalty' early last year. By July we were out of penalty. We have been gradually working our way through getting rid of 'spammy' links. Currently the website ranks for a handful of non competitive keywords looking at the domain on SEM RUSH. This has dropped drastically over the last 2 years.
Our organic traffic over the last 2-3 years has seen no 'falling off a cliff' and has maintained a similar pattern.
I've been told so many lies by SEO companies trying to get into my wallet I'm not sure who to believe.
We have started to add content onto all our Category pages to make more unique although most of our Meta Descriptions are a 'boiler plate' template.
I'm wondering....
- Am I still suffering from Penquin ?
- Am I trapped by Panda and if so how can I know that?
- Do I need more links removed?
- How can I start to rank for more keywords
I have a competitor online with the same DA, PA and virtually same number of links but they rank for 3500 keywords in the top 20.
Would welcome any feedback.
Many Thanks.

Don gave an excellent answer. You definitely do have a "field of dreams" site right now.
I will use a enterprise tool to audit your site if you would like me to? This will tell you if you have too many links your crawl budget and other issues that could be affecting your website. Also if you have disavowed Links this will obviously impact your site sometimes in a negative manner. Even if the links are junk they are still sometimes not harming the website. Please don't think what I just said means leave bad links pointing out your website.
Remember that whoever built your website to put the link to their site definitely does not know what they're doing SEO wise.
You may also want to consider combining your JavaScript and your CSS.
&
defering it will speed it up
http://www.magentocommerce.com/magento-connect/defer-javascript-extension.html
You can find many methods on magnetos website.
Cloudflare.com pro or Business not free edition is an easy way to do this
Your site is unfortunately running very slow and I have people running with more server request that do not see speeds over 1.5 seconds in the United States. Using a HHVM server configuration.
check out mgt-commerce.com There fast & extremely reasonable.
3.8 seconds out of Dallas is not very fast unfortunately.
Sorry for the short answer I will give you hard data when I get back to my desk
sincerely,
Thomas

Hello W. Gilliland,
Sounds like you were a victim of some really crappy SEO sites / people in the past. A very hard lesson to learn no doubt. The one good thing is it has at least starting engaging you in the process. Nobody knows your business better than you, even the most experienced SEO in the world. Being able to speak some of the SEO language will not only help you communicate with them, but also provides the benefit of you knowing what the hell they are doing, or attempting to do.
Okay, onto the questions.
1. Am I still suffering from Penguin? To determine this you'll want to check your Google Webmasters and make sure you have no Manual penalty. Second, you need to evaluate every page's back link profile. The penguin algorithm doesn't apply to just top level pages but every page! Many many question and answer guru's have helped with other questions about this topic, perhaps thumbing through them to see if anything catches your eye.
2. Are you trapped in Panda and how do you know? First know what Panda was, it was an update that targeted low quality sites which were ranking well for keywords. Your site is far from low quality.. I don't think you have to worry about this directly, however in conjunction with the Penguin update which devalued crappy low quality links, it is possible that some of the "so-so" sites that were linking to you, may actually been hit themselves and warrant a link removal.
3. Do you need to remove more links. Possibly, your site is huge and it would take awhile to completely navigate your back-link profile. I enjoy helping, but this question is one that is not easily answered without research.
4. How can you start ranking for more keywords? Content is the key, and a huge obstacle for e-commerce sites. Maintaining tens of thousands of products can be extremely challenging. My advice is usually to focus on big keywords and pour on the content. For example, take a Brand & Category and write some compelling content for that page. I know Magneto is flexible enough to allow for custom pages, perhaps you can pick some of your best selling, or higher profit margin categories and dive in.
To continue on with this thought I will have to be a tad curt about somethings, but please don't take them offensively rather productively. What you have now is what I call a "Field of Dreams" website, that is to say build it and they will come. There is nothing wrong with this, if your goal is only to provide existing customers an avenue to shop from home. However, if the point of the website is bring in new customers and not just a service portal for existing customers then you have to do much more.
Example continued... I pointed out that you could focus on a Brand and Category, lets look at one (Paul Smith Footwear). To be honest I know nothing about Paul Smith, or their footwear, but that's okay for this example. Your page representing a keyword like "Paul Smith Footwear" looks like this.
Title="Footwear" (not okay)
Description="Default Description" (not okay)
Keywords="Magento, Varien, E-commerce" (not okay, tag shouldn't exist at all)
H1="Footwear" (not okay)
Content= nothing really, a search filter with product imagesIn this example I would recommend getting the SEO basics right, title, description, and populating some content. Because I know this can be a huge undertaking, you don't have to do your whole site at once, pick your top sellers or profit items and have a staff member or yourself write some content for the Brand and Product. Then use that text in conjunction with what you already have there.
Example Revised
Title="Paul Smith Men's Footwear, | Excel Clothing"
Description="Paul Smith men's footwear is handpicked fashionable footwear for all occasions"
Keywords=(this tag would be completely removed from all pages) H1="Paul Smith Men's Footwear"
Content = Use the keyword again, describe the Brand, and how the footwear makes you fell and look, how Excel clothing decides which Paul Smith footwear to stock and sell. Then show me the filter and product images. In summary, you were hit by some bad SEO practices you'll need to be very proactive about monitoring all your back links. Continue evaluating each link and disavow the bad sites links. Ranking more keywords requires a complete look at the SEO basics and how they are implemented on your site. There is also room for improvement in the content department.
That is my take on the matters and I hope you consider them in the helpful spirit in which they were provided,
Don

Sale Pages On An eCommerce Website
I have a client who sells 50 brands of shoes. At the moment the developer has a noindex/nofollow tag on all sale pages which is wrong as around 10% of site activity revolves around those pages. The structure looks like this: 1. For Cats/Sub Cats site/sale
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Nigel_Carr
site/womens/sale
site/womens/shoe/sale
site/womens/shoes/ballerinas/sale For every cat/subcat - there are 10 cats and average 5 subcats per cat so 50 pages of sale. 2. For Brands site/brand
site/brand/womens
site/sale/brand
site/sale/womens/brand
site/sale/womens/cat/brand
site/sale/womens/cat/subcat/brand So each brand can have four sale pages on top of its own brand page. 50 brands x 54 = around 2700. Now no one is going to start writing 2700 pieces of additional on page content (although Meta is OK! ) and we risk further diluting the brand pages we need to show highly for, so we need to do something. Should we Category Pages: 1. Allow all sale cat and subcat pages to proliferate through Google? or
2. Canonicalise all sale sub category pages back to category
3. Caonicalise all category and Subcategory pages back to sale/womens Brand Pages: 1. Allow all sale brand pages to proliferate through Google ?
2. Canonicalise Sub Cat brand pages back to sale/category/brand
3. Canonicalise Sub Cat and Cat back to sale/brand Note the lower pages never do well in search. If you search a brand + Sale in Google it is always the site/brand page that comes up, never the sale version (This is from research on other similar sites and my own analysis) Same with Sub Cats - eg, Brand + Subcat - it's always site/brand that comes up first wand has the highest PA. Also we can't analyse any of these sale pages in MOZ or anywhere else as they are not in search at all having been no indexed. That's my conundrum for today, Any thoughts would be appreciated!0 -
Reclaiming Ranking positions in Google
We have a website we are working on that was ranking well in Google but since having a hosting upgrade has completely dropped in rankings. When a hosting upgrade was made, the developer added an incorrect robots.txt file that restricted the site from being found, hence resulting in lost rankings. We have since sorted out that issue so the robots.txt is OK. However, ranking results have yet to be reclaimed. We are unsure why these rankings haven't rebounded back, as it has been a while now. The site is https://www.brightonpanelworks.com.au. We have since also attempted to add a sitemap however to help the site be better crawled and to regain rankings, however, it appears that sitemap generators are having problems creating a sitemap for this site and we are not sure why. And we are not sure whether this may relate to why Google has not picked up on pages and ranking results have not be restored. If you have any ideas as to how we can reclaim rankings to the strong positions they were in previously, that would be much appreciated. We believe we may be missing something here that is not allowing webpages to be picked up and ranked by Google.

Why does some sites rank with no seo
Why is it that some site rank with zero efforts? I have been working on some seo for a while on my main site and i have been getting more info competition analysis with sem and moz. Looking at the states from this website which tends to popup often in the searches on page 1-2 before my site. This site is not keyword optimized, meaning they arent even trying to rank.

There is no content, articles etc.,
6 backlinks (nothing powerful just 2 directory links and 2 from developer)
Site really isnt even designed to get traffic as its a trade only ecommerce website
I doubt they are hiding anything as far as backlinks etc. as it will get them too many visitors they dont want
The city i am searching isnt even on the page (it is a city within a city so maybe google still relates it)
PA 24 DA 15 Now my site:
Optimized reasearched keywords
175 backlinks
All my main pages have content with images, alt tags, internal linking
full of content, blogs, videos, products (probably 4000, could a site being too big be an issue?)
Site gets regular updates
I probably have 200 citations
All the social media which gets done often
PA 32 DA 20 They do get a good bit of traffic but that is probably the only thing i would see but it would be direct traffic mostly i believe as it would be people going to order regularly since it is a print reseller. They may have some age on me 15 vs 8 years. Could it be some kind of penalty i am not sure about lingering? According to what i know to check everyything looks ok, no shady links accoding to sem. I am working more and more on all the pages but this competittion site really doesnt have crap going on probably 8 pages and 1 page does all the ordering. What the hell does google want from me exactly!0 -
How to improve my rankings?
Hi guys, I'm targeting a specific country NZ to start off with as my site is only new 3months old - whilst I'm trying to rank for various keywords such as - psychic readings, online psychic readings, love psychics, clairvoyant, astrology, tarot card readings etc I can see I'm slowly ranking around 18, 20,30,40 through my blog page, but nothing from the site. I know the site is content thin and were currently working on improving this, is there anything else you can suggest that perhaps I might need to be aware of? Or any tools I could use to go about getting information that could help put me ahead lol Thanks all!

Interlinking multiple websites
Most websites (for example) Zalando intern link there other CC tld domains to the root. For example: On http://www.zalando.nl/damesschoenen-pumps/ the links in the footer go to the other CC tld's: http://www.zalando.es , zalando.co.uk etc. Does anyone have experience with the fact if you would interlink to the relevant page on the other CC tld;s.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | TjeerdvZ
For example: http://www.zalando.nl/damesschoenen-pumps/ links to http://www.zalando.co.uk/womens-shoes-heels/ in stead of linking to the homepage ?
In theory this would give more relevance intern linking. Looking forward to hear if anyone tried or experienced this and what the results where?0 -
Website.com/blog/post vs website.com/post
I have clients with Wordpress sites and clients with just a Wordpress blog on the back of website. The clients with entire Wordpress sites seem to be ranking better. Do you think the URL structure could have anything to do with it? Does having that extra /blog folder decrease any SEO effectiveness? Setting up a few new blogs now...

Rankings dropped - Why?
At the end of November a client site dropped significantly in the rankings. The drop effected almost all the keyphrases we monitor. Historically the homepage has always ranked higher than the sub-pages - however now it seems Google is no longer ranking the home page, and instead ranking the sub-pages, just far far lower down. Any ideas what could cause this?

Why would the PageRank for all of our websites show the same?
The last time I checked (early this year), the PageRank on the sites I manage varied, with the highest showing as 6. It made sense as the PR6 site has loads of links and has been around for a long time, whereas the other sites hadn't. Now all of our websites are showing the same PageRank - 6, even one that has recently launched and another that has barely any links/traffic or anything to it. I didn't check the PR of that one last time (I'd be surprised if it was 2), but the sites now showing as 6 ranged from PR3 to PR6 back then. We changed server in February...so could this issue be something to do with all of the sites being stored on the same server? It doesn't seem right but it's the only thing I can think of. At the moment, the Domain Authority for these six websites ranges from 27 to 62.
