Not showing in local for primary keyword
-
I have a client in the junk removal business and I can't get him to show in local for junk removal +city. Junk removal is not a Google Plus category so we have to choose Garbage Collection Service, which everyone else does as well. I've optimized the site and the local listing pretty well, much better than the competitors, but we're still not showing.
It's not that we're asking to rank better, we're just trying to get on the list for the one term that makes all the difference in this business. I feel like there's a junk removal party going on and we're not invited. I've thought about a possible over-optimization penalty, but there's no G warning or message and we use fewer keywords than our competitors and have no spammy links as some of the competition does. Some companies that are no longer in business are visible. I just can't figure out what we might be doing wrong.
Any ideas or suggestions I might have missed?

Hey Dino!
Thanks so much for following up. If your story isn't proof of the importance of proper categorization, nothing is
I'm really glad your client popped back into the pack and wish you luck with making them even stronger with the work ahead. It looks like a lot of effort has gone into their website, so that's a really good sign!

Thanks Miriam, I've been working on the citations and many of them should be updated very soon. I will complete a full audit as it turns out the company was once a general contractor, which may be where Google is pulling much of their information from (yes, the importance of accurate citations).
All that being said, after I updated the category yesterday, big surprise, client is now back in local for Junk Removal, less than a day later. First problem solved, now on to those citations....
Thanks again for having a look and for the kind feedback.
Regards, Dino

Hey Dino!
No worries, and hope your trip is a good one!
Now, what I say here can in no way replace a formal audit, but I confirm that your client isn't showing up in the 3 pack or the top results in the Local Finder view for 'junk removal philadelphia'.
- Looks like you've got some citation work ahead:

Pay close attention to the consistency of the business name. It seems like there are a ton of different versions of it. And, pay very close attention to the presence of this duplicate Google+ Local page: https://plus.google.com/108918779748346828023/about?hl=en-US
-
Are you confident that the business address is legitimate? I'm not seeing any signage for this business on Streetview at its address:
- I would highly recommend putting the toll free and vanity numbers in images rather than text at the top of your website. It's the local number you want to be sure you're promoting most. Glad to see it in your footer and on your contact page!
These are just a few things I spotted in 2-3 minutes of looking. Looks like a full audit would be a smart idea when you're back in the US. Hope this helps!

Miriam, so sorry for not responding sooner. I don't know why I never saw your response when you posted it (just thought everyone was ignoring me). I'm overseas at the moment (Indonesia) and internet connections do some really funky things here. I know it's been awhile, but thank you for the response. I'm still having the issue, however, but you've given me some things to check out.
Here's the client: http://ezcleanupphiladelphia.com
Regarding the categories, Junkyard, Salvage Yard and Auto Wrecker really don't describe his business. I do like the other category you mentioned, Garbage Dump Service, but right now, Google isn't showing any local results for that search (from where I'm sitting).
But check this out... I went back into the dashboard to see what I could try and discovered that the primary category had been changed from Garbage Collection Service to General Contractor! Ugh. I have a team who has been helping me so now I have to find out who's been messing with it. I'll repost to this thread if it comes back.
Thanks again for your thoughtful answer, Dino

Hey Dino,
Are you able to share the website? It would definitely help the community provide specific, rather than generic, suggestions. If you can't, that's okay, but you are welcome to share the URL here if you're comfortable with that and will probably get much more actionable advice by doing so.
In the meantime, I'm wondering about your chosen category. I think of a garbage collection service as a city service that picks up my recycling cans ... not something I would call to haul away an old car or something like that. I noticed that Google offers these 3 categories:
Junkyard
Salvage Yard
Auto Wrecker
In addition to Garbage Collection Service, which you mentioned you're already using, I also see a category for 'Garbage Dump Service'. I wonder if that's an important one for you to know about as the synonyms are very similar to those used for Garbage Collection Service:
pick up, pickup, recycling, trash, pick up, pickup, recycling, trash, pick up, pickup, recycling, trash
So, some interesting possibilities, but without seeing the site itself and looking at the results, best I can do here is suggest you do a full audit of the website. Here's a great post for that: https://mza.bundledseo.com/blog/ultimate-local-seo-audit

How to rank local keywords?
Hi guys, I have been enjoying here to be a part of the community. A simple question: I have some local low volume keywords and want to rank on 1 with all. I have set up pages according to the keywords such as "california plumbers" and page is /california-plumbers.html To rank these types of keywords I am doing local listing and adding these particular page instead of "home page". Am I doing right? Would classifieds and local listings are suffice to get these keywords on 1 spot of Google? What else can I do? Can you suggest me some queries to find "deep local directories or classified or other stuff whereby I can target my pages? Thank you in advance for ideas.

What is the radius for local search results
Does anyone know if there is a specific radius google uses to display local search results or is it simply based on the number of competitors or industry vertical.

Let's say I am based in covent garden London and I am looking for an indian restaurant. I assume that all results will be very localized as there are plenty of Indian restaurants in convent garden. But If i was looking for, let's say "wooden pipe shop" (i believe there is none in convent garden) what would google display? how far away from my desired location will google be able to extend it's results to?0 -
Local Help! Google+ Accounts for New Brand & Service Sites
Hi Mozzers! I have a lot of knowledge in local search, G+ page setup/optimization, etc, etc... However, I'm about to begin a business based around "home services". The brand will be ABC Home Services as the umbrella. Then under it will be the individual services like "ABC Carpet Cleaning" "ABC Roofing", etc... Each service will have it's own website for optimization purposes and local search authority building as well as the services will be developed over the course of a couple years ie: carpet cleaning would go up 1st, then the next service and so on... I have purchased all of the domains I want for the services to focus on. What do you recommend I do in terms of setting up Gmail accounts/G+ accounts? Individual service related Gmail accounts and have a main "ABC Home Services" Google account and then add in the service G+ pages over time? I'm open to any questions, but trying to make this the most efficient for me and my team and also the best if can be for local optimization goals and criteria. Thank you! - Patrick

Increasing positions in local maps
Our team is working with a small law firm and we haven’t had as much luck increasing their local visibility for those key terms that they would like to rank for: Santa Barbara accident attorney/lawyer injury attorney Santa Barbara wrongful death injury lawyers serious injury attorney Santa Barbara We’ve currently got an 87% on Moz Local, 12 5 star reviews on Google+ and are working to raise the bar, however the client is unhappy not being on the top 3 - there are also instances where firms with 0 reviews, non verified G+ pages who rank higher than them. They lost a lot of links when they moved from a large marketing firm specializing in working with attorneys to our firm, which could be a factor. Although we’re gaining ground, they are considering going back as they only want the results - and I don’t blame them. Would appreciate any tips, thoughts, or advice so we can help this client.

Local business with many locations
Hi guys So ive been helping a local business out with their Google my business pages, they have them set up over several different accounts, which I dont think is a problem, however am sure its more helpful having them under one login, does this matter so much ? They are one company, however the titles for their business listings are all different, they have stuck some keywords into the business titles and the area, I am guessing the title for the different businesses in different citys should all be the same just the company name ? is this correct as they need to be consistent dont they ? As i am sure WH smiths for example all their business listings in different citys are just WH smiths and not with some keywords after each different branch ? I just wanted to check this up, and make sure I wasnt messing up someones listings lol !! J

How to show on Google Maps for specific areas close to me?
Hi there, Im wondering the best approach to get more consistent listings for google map searches (the pins on the map) for a business.

Here is a small overview. My client provides storage services in London. His business is very local as customers will only want to use them if they are from surrounding local suburbs within the City. His business is showing on the map for some of the suburbs close to his business, but it does not actually show when you search for the closest location (suburb) that his business is located in, or other local suburbs. What would be the best approach to ensure google shows a pin for his search results when users search for all close-by suburbs to his business address? Is this possible or will it just happen over time? He already has landing pages on his website for each of his suburbs that he is trying to target, eg: "Self Storage Camden".0 -

Hell Moz family, My business recently bought 10 locations from a competitor, but I am having real issues claiming these new business listings from Google. I have tried claiming existing listings and starting new ones, but it seems Google have the old business as the registered owner and therefore display their icons in Google Maps and local SERPS??!!! Will Moz Local we rolling out in the UK as well as the US? It would be a great help to manage in one place. Regards Ben
