Delay between being indexed and ranking for new pages.
-
I've noticed with the last few pages i've built that there's a delay between them being indexed and them actually ranking. Anyone else finding that? And why is it like that?
Not much of an issue as they tend to pop up after a week or so, but I am curious.
Isaac.

This is something I've seen on websites of all sizes. I've worked with a couple of well-respected colleges - the type of site that you would think Google would automatically trust - and it took anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 months from new pages being indexed to ranking as high as they can go without more help. We actually charted the rise of one article, written by a professor, with a link off the homepage of one of the college sites, and it took over a month to stop rising in rankings. For reference, this was about a year ago.
So, I think Alan is exactly right: I think that Google wants a lot of confirmation signals that a page is legit, and it takes awhile for its crawler to identify all of them. Google values how long a page has been around, and click through rate, which comes over time.

This is one of the million questions we face dealing with a less than clear message from Google on what they do.
Generally speaking, just one scenario is that they need to get confirmation signals when new content is discovered. Unfortunately that's not something that always happens, yet it does happen. The stronger a site is long-term, the less likely that will happen, yet even then it can.

What kind of impact does a 404 have in a sitemap regarding ranking?
We recently had a site update where our robots file disallowed our sitemap for about two weeks. When we found the problem and resubmitted the sitemap to Google Search Console, it found a 404 error. Does this have any impact on ranking or visibility if we are still recovering from the disallow?

Link reclamation: What happens when backlinks are pointing to other page than the most related page? Any risks?
Hi all, We have started link reclamation process as we failed to redirect our old website links to newly created pages. Unfortunately most of the backlinks are pointing to a page which already has lots of backlinks. Just wondering if I can redirect the old pages to the other pages than the actual related page they must be pointing to make sure only one page doesn't take away all the backlinks. And what happens if Google find that backlink is pointing to a different page than the actual page? Thanks

Google has indexed some of our old posts. What took so long and will we lose rank for their brevity?
Hi, We just had a few of our old blog posts indexed by Google. There are short formed posts, and I want to make sure we're not going to get dinged by Google for their length. Can you advise?https://www.policygenius.com/blog/guaranteed-issue

Was there a new Google update in the past couple of days. Traffic on my test site has gone from ~ 1,000 per day to over 4,000 per day for no particular reason. What's more important for a local company, being in the 7 pack or in the top 10 organic results? Which one attracts more clicks? Is the optimization for local ranking just became more important than the traditional SEO?0
