Client has franchisees on separate sub domains
-
Hi, a large client of mine has all of his franchisee network on sub domains and on separate wordpress websites (multi-sites). I have advised him that the best way forward is to use the main company .com domain and create sub folders for all of his franchisee areas.
Does anyone foresee any problems with this going forward or do you have any advice to offer. I'd be interested in hearing what your verdict is on the subdomain vs subfolder war.
Many thanks

Good to know I'm on the right track, thanks for your feedback Highland.

I think you're right. it doesn't sound like there's a solid case here for subdomains. Consolidation would make for easier marketing as well.

Hi Highland, thanks for your input. As it stands at the moment the 'carpet' company has its main website on Wordpress with 20 multi-sites (franchisee sites) all on separate subdomains. BUT the main problem is, is that main company website used to get about 250 sessions per day and now they only get around 60 per day.
The franchisees have basically duplicated each website and changed a few headings but no real change in content making the site have loads of duplicate content. My gut feeling is that they have lost a substantial amount of authority due to all the subdomain websites. I am planning on a rebuild and then putting all the franchisee pages in folders feeding off the main company website. The only reason for the separate franchisee sites is so they can update their own news section.
I think this can all be done from one main website and pull local 'tagged' news articles from the franchisee pages.

Subdomains are a bank shot at best. Google can determine their relationship to the root domain, but you're relying on Google to make that connection. A subfolder, however, has an implicit connection to the root domain (because it's under said domain). Just understand that a subdomain (for the purposes of SEO) should be treated like it is its own site. That means each one gets its own marketing campaign.
Should you consolidate? Possibly. How related are the franchisees? I mean, if we're talking restaurants that's a no-brainer to consolidate, but if we're talking about, say, carpet cleaning you could make a case for subdomains focusing the local aspects better. Additionally, a subdomain would afford them their own site so they could do distinct advertising/promos.

We added hundreds of pages to our website & restructured the layout to include 3 additional locations within the sub-pages, same brand/domain name. The 3 locations old domains were redirected to their sites within our main brand domain. How long could Google take to crawl/index the new pages and rank the keywords used within those pages? And possibly increase our domain authority hopefully? We didn't want our brand spread out over multiple websites/domains on the internet. This also allowed for more content to be written on pages, per each of our locations service's, as well.

Domain branding and such
I have a client that has a website hosted with the site designers hosting company. That designer has proven to be unreliable, ineffective and non-responsive. We have since built a new website using a new domain name, but now we have lost all citations and links. Can I reclaim this domain name by pointing it towards my server and migrating the new site to his established domain? Should I update all of his citations to the new domain? What will happen to the old site? The old designer does not respond to any emails or phone calls so any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Footer link back to developers domain
I have read a lot about where it is suggested to either not put an attribute link in the footer of a clients site or to no follow it. But I have a little bit different take on the question. How does this work on a large scale? Are these manual penalties, or are they automatic? By large scale, I am talking about big cms programs such as Wordpress, Joomla, and the likes of those. They all have links back to their site in the footer of the default templates. Is this bad? Does it not rally matter on the scale of companies such as this?

Internal links, new pages & Domain Authority
I have two questions regarding Domain Authority: 1. Is it possible that a drop in Domain Authority may have been caused by adding a blog and blog posts? In other words, would adding pages/posts dilute the site's authority? And will it catch back up with itself or will that require inbound links to those new pages? (oops! that was 3 questions in one) 2. Would it be detrimental to have internal links coming from blog posts without authority to my Home page and could that have contributed to a drop in Domain Authority? Thanks!

SaaS client portal for sharing files, invoicing, messaging?
For lack of a better way to describe what I'm looking for: Can anyone recommend a SaaS application that provides a secure client portal where a company and its clients can upload and share files, send messages, and that allows invoicing and online bill payment? Security is important as some files contain sensitive information, SSL required. I feel like I'm sort of looking for a CRM or something, but not really; and it's almost like base camp, but not quite. Ideas?
