Pros & Cons Of Closing Forum Discussions To New Comments
-
I work with a site that gets lots of members and conversions from its specialty interest community forum out of organic search. The site has been around for a number of years and still has many forum pages that do well in search that are 5+ years old. Some of these discussions may have dozens of comments and a few have thousand words.
The option has been floated to end accepting new comments on specific discussions at some point. I can see the negatives, such as folks coming out of search and wanting to register to comment, but not be able to... if we closed the discussion to new comments.
I've always assumed that new comments may freshen up a page a little organic search-wise, but honestly don't know how much that matters.
Are there any good reasons to close a discussion to new comments? Related question, what do you think is the optimum qty of unique text before paginating?
Thanks!

Hi Oleg & Chris,
Thanks for the answers. This is exactly what I've been thinking, but wanted to sanity check it... just to make sure I wasn't just having an initial negative reaction to someone else's idea.
Best... Mike

It can depend on the type of site you're running I suppose but generally I see too many benefits to fresh user generated content to go closing them.
If you had topics that were particularly seasonal and no benefit could be had from yourself or users after a certain date (maybe an obsolete product that you don't want new buyers to confuse with the latest version) it may be worth closing comments and providing a link to a discussion on the new product.
You're on the right track in that user-generated content is a great thing for your brand/product, user engagement and SEO in general so the more legitimate interaction you have the better. Fresh content is what search engines look for and genuine discussion gives users a reason to frequently return to your site, allowing you to build that rapport.
As far as quantity of unique text, Oleg is right in that this becomes almost a pure UX question. Whatever works best for user intent is what you should be doing in this case. I personally prefer minimal pagination, especially on mobile but I'm just 1 user and may not even be your target audience.

comments going off topic, a topic that can be split into several threads instead of one, low quality comments, hard to find information (poor ux). But overall, I think it would be great to just keep updating a strong thread. Keep building the authority + hit more long tail kws + QDF bump.
what do you think is the optimum qty of unique text before paginating?
I think this would be more of a UX issue as "paginated" pages are treated as part of a series.

Confused about SEO for Forums (Status Code 200)
I recently created a forum for my website (lets say my site is xyz.com so my forum is forum.xyz.com) and I've been getting status code 200s for tons of my forum pages about duplicate content- especially for threads that have a ton of interaction. Is there a way to fix this? I want my forum to be indexed and not get penalized, but if i canonical tag my main forum page wouldn't that take away the glory the awesome interactions my users are having? Anyone with forum experience can shed some light on this? Thank you so much!

Show parts of page A on page B & C?
Good afternoon,
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | rayvensoft
A quick question. I am working on a website which has a large page with different sections. Lets say: Page 1
SECTION A
SECTION B
SECTION C Now, they are adding a new area where they want to show only certain sections, so it would look like this: Page 2
SECTION A Page 3
SECTION C Page 4
SECTION D So my question is, would a rel='canonical' tag back to Page 1 be the correct way of preempting any duplicate content issues? I do not need Page 2-4 to even be indexed, it is just a matter of usability and giving the users what they are looking for without all the rest of the extra stuff. Gracias. Tesekürler. Salamat Ko. Thanks. (bonus thumbs up for anybody who knows which languages each of those are) 🙂0 -
Wildcard Redirects & Canonical Tags
I have an interesting situation. Current URLs Example1: www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-1234.html
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | NakulGoyal
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-1234-1.html
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-1234-1-1.html Canonical on All Above URLs:
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-1234.html New URL:
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-4567.html Current URLs Example2: www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-1234+10.html
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-1234+10-1.html
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-1234+10-1-1.html Canonical on All Above URLs:
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-1234+10.html New URL:
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-6789.html Current URLs Example3: www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-1234+10+5.html
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-1234+10+5-1.html
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-1234+10+5-1-1.html Canonical on All Above URLs:
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-1234+10+5.html New URL:
www.domain.com/american-red-widgets-cid-6789+5.html I want to make sure all variations of the above URL redirect to the new URLs. However, as you see in Example 3, we are dealing with variables that are passed on. (+5 in this case). Question 1: What wildcard 301 redirect / regular expression can I use to tackle these ? Question 2: If we redirect www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-1234+10+5.html to www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-6789+5.html and www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-6789+5.html contains the canonical tag www.domain.com/american-red-widgets-cid-6789+5.html, any concerns or red flags here ?0 -
Privacy Policy & T&C's SEO related question
With Adwords they request a Privacy Policy and T&C's sometimes for an Ad to be approved. Silly question I know but do you think Google looks out for pages like this to identity websites which are more genuine for organic? Thanks

New to SEO. How do I set up a 301 Redirect? What Else should I do?
Hello, I am new to web design. I designed my own site using dreamweaver and did all my seo on my own, I read a few books. Long story short I rank on the bottom of page 1 just after 3 months and the keywords are highly competitive. Now, I am up against some heavy hitters from national brands versus my local real estate site. I don't have a 301 redirect, and am not sure what else I should be doing to get my site ranked higher. I have back links from various sites, ( non-paid ) so it's what others call white hat. When I grade my site on website grader I get a great score versus the sites that are higher than me. I'm guessing my sites age is an issue. I guess I'm looking for some guidance. Thank you all, Here is my site to view. http://www.bronxpad.com

ECommerce syndication & duplicate content
We have an eCommerce website with original software products. We want to syndicate our content to partner and affiliate websites, but are worried about the effect of duplicate content all over the web. Note that this is a relatively high profile project, where thousands of sites will be listing hundreds of our products, with the exact same name, description, tags, etc. We read the wonderful and relevant post by Kate Morris on this topic (here: http://mz.cm/nXho02) and we realize the duplicate content is never the best option. Some concrete questions we're trying to figure out: 1. Are we risking penalties of any sort? 2. We can potentially get tens of thousands of links from this concept, all with duplicate content around them, but from PR3-6 sites, some with lots of authority. What will affect our site more - the quantity of mediocre links (good) or the duplicate content around them (bad)? 3. Should we sacrifice SEO for a good business idea?

Image Galleries & Leaking Pagerank
I have a website in a niche that's highly graphical in nature. Most of the pages that I rank well for are mainly textual at the moment, but I'm gradually adding image galleries to these pages. The galleries consist of a number of thumbnails that are html linked to the large version of the image (via the Lightbox script). My question: will the page lose pagerank because of the many links from the thumbnails to the images (upto 30/page besides the normal links)?
