Local SEO does not rank well
-
Hello everybody,
before 3 months i began seo in gialia.net.gr. Its an eshop based on symfony framework.
We started with on-page seo optimization and after making links in directories, forums and article directories.
After 2 months we saw rankings for niche keywords (γυαλια ηλιου, γυαλια ηλιου προσφορες) at 5th and 8th page of google.gr.
Now, the rankings does down and i cannot unserstand the reason. I checked old backlinks with opensite explorer, and found some spam backlinks links (3/10). Is this the reason that seo not going well?
I am very dissapointed and i would like to tell me you opinion about what is going wrong with that site.
My customer owns one more domain, fotispapoulias.gr and i am thinking to move all the site that is running on gialia.net.gr to fotispapoulias.gr (301 redirect to all links). The fotispapoulias.gr ranks better in the same niche keywords without seo. Is it good idea? Will achieve better rankings or not?
Thanks

I see two possible problems here. Both have been pointed out but I'll address both.
First, duplicate content from the same owner. If they have another site that has the same intent ... same topic ... reason for the site, you might want to merge them. I can't tell as I don't speak that language, but if they are competing sites, you don't want to pour resources into two places. That's my recommendation to the site owner.
Second, the bad links. It is possible that even links that have worked in the past for other sites might be hurting this site. Again, it's hard for me to tell, but if the link brings no value other than being a link and no one uses the link to get to the site ever, you run the risk of hurting that site with that link. Free directories are prime targets for Google. I am not sure how stringent Google Greece is on this yet, but this might be an issue.
With both of those things being said, if the links are hurting the site and you merge the two sites, you might hurt both by merging them.
I'm sorry I can't be more explicit of the cause, but with some poor links in the past and some less than stellar links now, and a possible duplicate intent site from the same owner, either or both of those could be the cause.
If it were me, start with merging the two sites. If the rankings drop for the well ranking site, clean up all poor links to either domain. If it stays down, unmerge and just let the poorer ranking domain die.
Your other option is to tell the client to focus on the site that is doing well, drop this one. But be careful with the link building. You don't want the same thing to happen to the other site and that's possible.

Hi Kevin,
no, these spammy backlinks i described were old. We created new backlinks only on free directories, forums, etc.
We have made more than 30 seo campaigns in company with great results and its the first now we see that problem.
My concern is about 1)The problems occurs because of some old spam backlinks or 2) is google dancing?
As i refered before, my customer owns one more domain, fotispapoulias.gr and i am thinking to move all the site that is running on gialia.net.gr to fotispapoulias.gr (301 redirect to all links). The fotispapoulias.gr ranks better in the same niche keywords without seo. Is it good idea? Will achieve better rankings or not?

You stated : after making links in directories, forums and article directories." Were these the old backlinks you described? If not, were any of these new backlinks spammy? Did you get any earned links?

Keyword Ranking History Chart
The attached image shows the Keyword Ranking History with big downward spirals on Aug 27 and Sep 24th. Yet it's also showing up within the #10-#20 row. What is the official technical reason for why it's in both places? My boss is asking and I'm blanking. 🙂 Just that the URL was found in both spots? B69toK9

Complex Rankings Issue For A Law Firm Site
Be warned, this is a complex issue that I have and will require someone who has some advanced knowledge about 301s and link penalty’s. I have a law firm client whose site is having some issues. There are some very complex details here so I'm going to articulate them in bullet points in hopes of making the issues easy to understand. So here's my root problem: We have poor organic rankings (4th, 5th, 6th page for most terms) despite Domain Authority of 32 (avg. 1st page competitor is 28) and some very strong white hat link building the last 60 days or so. How's their backlink profile look, you ask? When you look at their backlink profile in OSE, their spam score is a 1/17 (not sure if that's credible in any way). Lot's of links that score 5's on the spam score make up about 10% of their OSE links. Here’s where it gets tricky; those links are not directed the client's New URL, they are links that go to some old URLs the client used to have, for which they had an SEO guy who built all those crappy links. Those URLs with the crappy links (we'll call them The Crappy URLs) were 301'd (can we all agree 301'd is a verb?) to the NEW URL for just a couple of months. Shortly after that, NEW URL dropped almost completely out of Google, so the client turned off the 301s. So despite those 301s being turned off, OSE still shows all the links going to The Crappy URLs but is giving The New URL credit for them. Keep in mind, the 301s were turned off about 6 months ago so it’s a little strange that OSE still shows those 301s. This has led me to the conclusion that the Domain Authority that OSE shows of 32, is not a “real” number since it is seemingly based off links inherited from 301s that no longer exist. So now I’m trying to create an action plan for this client that will hopefully help us start to make some real progress in our rankings. This client does not have the budget to wait another 6 months for some sign of hope so time is of the essence. Here’s my theoretical action plans I’m choosing from and would like the communities input on which, if any, they feel is best (Also, if I’m missing something or you have an idea, I’m all ears): **Potential Action Plans: ** Do nothing, keep building quality links, creating quality content, monitor crawl reports/gwt for issues. That strategy is going to win long term. #1 + Create one page sites on The Crappy URLs, setup GWT for them, submit sitemaps thus forcing Google, OSE and other web crawlers to index them, thus removing any potential residual penalties from the 301s. NOTE: Currently The Crappy URLS are just landing on GoDaddy’s default landing page which is of course not being indexed by Google or OSE. #2 + Disavow all the bad links going to The Crappy URLS. Then once the bad links no longer appear in the OSE profile for each of The Crappy Sites, 301 them again, thus inheriting the good links but not the bad. #1 + 301 the Crappy URLS back to the New URL, while also disavow any links going to The Crappy URLs. The logic here is that if the road back to recovery is going to be a few months away no matter what, when the 301 knocked them back 6 months ago no reputable link building was being done. I am cautiously optimistic the linkbuilding we are doing will eventually off set any penalty’s coming from the 301s. Plus now we’ll know the 32 Domain Authority OSE is giving us is real. This is the one I’m leaning towards quite frankly because I think it will reduce the recovery time and we’ll know somewhat quickly (30-60 days) if it’s actually working. 1-3 could each take 90 days before we know if it’s working. So please, if you have any expertise with any of this, your help or advice would be appreciated. I’d rather not share The New URL for obvious reasons but if you must know, simply message me and as long as you’re legit, I’ll share it with you.

Rankings confusion in pro campaign
Hello Moz-world! I recently set up a new campaign, and the crawl is still in the process of wrapping up (been 4 days). When I look at my rankings it tells me "not in the top 50" then when I scroll over, it shows me that my client is ranking in position 3, in the instance of one keyword. Anyone know why there is a discrepancy between what the report shows, and what it shows when you mouse over the rankings? Thanks! Tyler

Tried to find correlation between SEOMOZ statistic and google ranking.
I've made Google US search and than tried to compare SEOMOZ data for first few result. I've used Open Site Explorer and On-Page Report Card. On attached picture you can find this statistic. Pages are sorted in order as they appear in Google search. For me is big question why position 2 and 4 is so hight and 6 is only 6. And what position 6 should do to go up. Thank you. 2s9zlu8.jpg

Rankings Check and Googles Quality Guidelines
Hi, I am trialing SEOmoz at present. What i dont understand is how come the rankings check, which presumably involves sending requests to Google, doesnt contravine the Google quality guidelines and cause a website to be penalised. Sorry if being a bit dim - but if anybody could explain it would be really helpful cheers stayin

How does moztrust compare with google page rank?
I have a trial Seomoz membership. I've been comparing my site to some of the competitor websites and Im confused about the moztrust vs google page rank. For instance some of my competitors have higher moztrust but my site has a higher google page rank. Isn't moztrust meant to duplicate google pagerank?? Why would these vary so much?
