Google SERPs changes
-
Hi
I wonder if anyone knew of any changes to the Google SERPs appearance in August 2015?
We dropped in over a thousand visits to the homepage on brand so I wanted to find out why.
Also, our DA went from 36 to 34 - does Google panda affect domain authority at all?
Thank you

Just as Russ says - many things may happen. I will add few more:
- Panda 4.2 https://mza.seotoolninja.com/google-algorithm-change#2015 even was on 17 July in UK SERP can be delayed to August. You also can be hit from Panda at any time. Just recovering is slow.
- Penguin can hit you any time. You need to check and keep one eye on your backlinks. Just recovering is slow.
- You can be hit from hosting infrastructure, CMS theme update, CMS plugin update, etc.
- You should investigated previous searches in SearchConsole and compare this to actual one. You can use archive.org and see historical changes in site and it's pages.
- You should check website log. Similar to "ship captain's log book" you and team there should log every change to site and it's pages/content. And even small change can invoke disaster after 2-3 months or even longer.
I wrote few things that need to be seen. I can wrote even longer but sometime there are even outside of SEO events. Imagine that you're auditing something as "Rover cars" and there is sudden drop... because company is now defunct. You also can be hit from negative campaign, rumors, etc. As you can see it isn't hard to explain what's happening without know this customer, it's niche, competitors and social networks.

Hi Russ,
Thank you for the reply.
Using WMT data I saw brand impressions were high but clicks were down that month, this is on a range of brand keywords both brand name and variations, difficult because the brand name is key industrial, but can just be called 'key' which is generic.
What do you mean by the images?

Hi Becky, thanks for your question...
1. The DA of your domain shouldn't really have a huge impact on brand searches. Also, that 2 point loss is fairly insignificant. I would be highly surprised if that were the culprit.
2. Panda does not impact Domain Authority
3. There was no major update in August of 2015, although display may have changed.
4. Was it specifically your brand name? Or a group of brand related keywords? I see images, a side knowledge panel result, etc. that may have impacted you, although probably not to the tune of 1K+ visitors.

Strange Google SERP Layout: Anyone?
I haven't been able to repeat this, but I just saw a strange Google SERP layout. The screenshot is attached below. Has anyone else seen something like this? I kind of rubbed my eyes and wondered 'if it was kicking in'. ca2JqaP

How Does Google Treat External Links to URLs with # Anchors?
Here are two URLs to explain this example: **Original URL: **example.com/1/ **URL that points to anchor within the webpage above: **example.com/1/#anchor Does Google treat these two URLs as separate entities or the same? For example, does an external link to the anchor URL pass full PageRank value to the original URL? How does Google handle this? Is there anything negative about this situation? Are there any risks associated with links to the anchor URL? Finally, is it more valuable for an external link to point to the URL without an anchor?

Can a google data refresh knock your pages out of the rankings?
I see that around mid November 2013 a handful of my sites pages dropped off of Google completely. It was around the data refreshes in November, and while everyone says it doesn't effect that much I was wondering if anyone knew if it could knock some of my pages out of the rankings for a specific keyword. Note - we had previously held muliple listings for different pages on our site for this particular keyword. Google kept the highest ranking and knocked the lower ones off. See attached image of our keyword ranking history to see what I mean. DcJJM0M

Bing Vs Google SERP
I realize the major search engines use different criteria but I don't see how - for the same home page keyword - my site could rank #3 on page 1 for a Bing search and be off the charts (Page 15+)? on Google. Has Google gone so far off the charts with their new Penguins and Pandas so as to be in a different universe? Seems Google is now extremely over-weighting big sites like Wikipedia, WebMD, eHow, etc. and in doing so vastly reducing the diversity of results shown. I am commonly seeing different pages of the same website appear multiple times in the first 2-3 pages of Google results. What's the point?

SERP and SEO Moz ranking
Until a couple of months ago the predicted SEO Moz ranking for a specific keyword was fairly close to what I actually experienced with my website. However, since then the correlation has not been good. For example, according to SEO Moz I am ranked #1 for a specific keyword with google.ca and google.com yet my site actually shows up consistently at #3 for that keyword. Has anyone else noticed this divergence?

Google decreased use of Meta Descripiton Tag
Over the past month or so I have noticed that Google is not using the meta description for my pages but is instead pulling text from the actual page to show on the SERP. Is Google placing less emphasis on meta descriptions?

How does NIH get these logos in the SERPs
When I search google.com for "OCD" or "bipolar" or other medical problems the #1 organic position is held by the NIH.gov website and a logo accompanies their listing. (see below) I see the logo in Chrome, IE and Firefox. Are you seeing that too? I see this logo with lots of NIH.gov listings in the SERPs. Any idea if that is something that webmasters can trigger or is that something google is controlling? health-40.gif
