How does Google measure page position in Webmasters?
-
Does anyone know exactly how Google measures page position in Webmaster Tools?
For example: In Google Webmaster Tools, we had a product which on the 22/12/15 was at position 7, and then dropped to position 112 on the 30/12/15. It then rose back up to position 7 on the 6/01/16 and then down to position 25 on the 16/01/16.
What does this mean and why?

Page position is volatile as i can see. You need to select page and switch to query. This will return all keywords that was shown and clicks are performed for THAT url. If you select single query you can see dance for that keyword position in SERP. I make 2 screenshots with obfuscated keywords and url where you can see this. You can look them on attachment. If you wish you can digg inside grouping traffic by device (mobile/tablet/desktop) and by country.
So dancing up and down is normal. Because Google make changes each day, they releasing new algos. Also your site getting links, social signals, etc. BUT meanwhile your competitors in SERP do same. And you playing against 100 or 1000 for some keywords.
If you look Algo change history then you can see that starting from Jan a new algo has been released as "core update". No additional information was given and it shake well SERP. Probably your up/down movements are caused from it. At this time no one can give you advice what to do except "write great content and they will follow" plus "follow guidelines". You can follow SEO experts in Twitter, Facebook and G+ because they can share interesting about it. Like:

Hi
Thanks for your answer.
The positions we are looking at are all showing in the graph for a particular product. Using the page position.
22/12 8.5
3/1 50
5/1 8
12/1 7
13/1 2
14/1 11
Can you or anyone explain why this rank varies so much day by day.

Search Analytics is only one way to check what position is your keywords and/or pages for specific queries.
There are two ways for aggregating - per site or per page. They are described here:
https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/6155685In first site when we have site that on one page return 3 pages on position 1,2,3 and user click somewhere - CTR = 100% because we have one click to site and average position = 1 because is calculated from highest position.
In second way (per page) - CTR = 33% (3 results and one click) and average will be 2 (1+2+3)/3 = 2.Now going back to your questions. It's normal your positions to goes up or down. Google was making changes to their algorightms - over 400-500 per year. Some of them can be seen, other was unseen. There are few ways to be informed for changes:
http://mozcast.com/ <- this is something as weather report for Google. There are sunny days and rainy too.
https://mza.seotoolninja.com/google-algorithm-change <- this is one of lists with changes. Some of them are confirmed, other doesnt.
Watching SEO community - can be in Twitter, Facebook, G+
Reading SEO news sitesNow back on your question. I believe that your site was going up and down from updates on 6 Jan and 16 Jan (they are confirmed as Core update). But i don't know about updates on 22 Dec or 30 Dec. Since "core update" is still in analysis of many industry leaders SEOs (even in Moz) i can't give you advise about it.

Fire a tag when element is loaded on page (Google Tag Manager)
I'm using an Element Visibility trigger to track a value that appears on a page. However, I want to track this value even when the user doesn't scroll to the area of the page where the element is (i.e. when the page is loaded, and the value is displayed below the fold, but the user doesn't scroll down there). Is there a way of doing this

I want to take down some pages, how do I inform google?
Hey Guys, I'm hoping someone can help - I'm in the midst of a site re-design - whilst one of our biggest reasons for the redesign was to create more space to write valuable content and unique content I have been reading other posts on moz about content auditing. I have come across a few articles in my own blog that are from 250 - 300 words to which the articles seem similar and the traffic is low. I'm wondering while I'm left to consolidate these articles and create a fresh article for each entry that is more in-depth, when I consolidate or delete these pages - do I need to inform google these pages have now been deleted? If so using Wordpress what is the best way to do this? Cheers and would appreciate some advise Thanks

Tracking Google places (7 pack listing) traffic in google analytics
Is there a way to see Google Places traffic (traffic from users clicking through the 7 pack listings) segmented in Google analytics ? Normally is it just lumped together with the organic traffic ? Can you see the search phrases used to find your site, or do they also show up under 'not provided' when from Google Places. Im aware i can see some limited data in the Google Places analytics, but these seem to be 2 days behind when ever i view them.

Google Webmaster Tools - When will the links go away!?
About 9 months back we thought having an extremely reputable company build our client some local citations would be a good idea. You definitely know this citation company, but I'll leave names out. Regardless, it's our mistake to cut corners. Google Webmaster Tools quickly picked up these new citations and added them to the links section. One of these citation spawned a complete mess of about 60K+ links on their network of sites through ridiculous subdomains of every state in the country and so many other domain variations. We immediately went into remove mode and had the site's webmaster take down the bad links from their site. This process took about a month for outreach. The bad links (60K+) have not been on the spam site for well over 6 months but GWT still shows them in the "links to your site" section. Majestic, Bing, and OSE only displayed the bad links for a brief time. Why is webmaster tools still showing these links after 6+ months? We typically see GWT update about every 2 weeks, a month tops. Any ideas? Could a changed robots.txt on the bad site prevent Google from updating the links displayed in GWT? We have submitted to disavow, but Google replied with "no manual penalty". We even blasted the bad site with Fiverr links, in hopes that Google would re-crawl them. No luck with anything we do. We have patiently waited for way too long. The rankings for this site got crushed on Google after these citations. How do we fix this? Should we worry about this? Any advice would really help. Thanks so much in advance.

Google Analytics bug?
Hi, I'm getting hits to this page, it's screwing up my Google Analytics stats. I know it's related with Google Website Optimizer, cuz it correlates with the tests I ran at the same dates. I'm just wondering if you've seen this before and what I should do to clean my stats? And is this affecting my SEO? Because it's still registering hits to these pages but I already stopped the tests a while go. Should I disallow this in my robots.txt file? Thanks! ga_bug3.jpg
