Search traffic hit after switching magazine to subdomain

Hi there,
I'm fairly new at all of this and would appreciate any help with understanding why our website has taken a hit in traffic. We curate an online magazine, which was previously accessible through: forensicoutreach.com. It was receiving about 2,000+ unique visitors per day up until a week ago, when we changed a few things.
However, the magazine doesn't reflect what our business does, so we created a product-focused web presence on forensicoutreach.com, and moved the magazine (which everyone loved) to library.forensicoutreach.com (DA 37, PA 1).
We thought separating the properties was a good idea, but now I'm not so sure. Our traffic on library.forensicoutreach.com is 1,500 (so 500 less than usual!) and our main property has about 56 unique visits a day. It's pretty substantial.
A few questions:
1. If we move the library to forensicoutreach.com/library, will that make any difference?
2. Where did we go wrong here and how can we fix it?

Thanks very much for your response. I've changed it back to the subfolder setting and we've regained our lost traffic. Amazing!

If your audience is the same as the audience for your business, I'd highly advocate keeping this in a subfolder like /library/ rather than a subdomain.
If your audience is different, then I'm not certain why you're doing the magazine, so let's assume that's not the case.
You will see a drop in organic traffic by moving to a subdomain for the reasons covered in the Whiteboard Friday that Dmytro shared. Regardless of whether you leave it on the subdomain or the subfolder, you'll need to create proper 301 redirects as Eric mentioned.
Please let us know if you have questions on that process, but to clearly answer the question of "If we move the library to forensicoutreach.com/library, will that make any difference?", YES, we recommend doing that /library/ subfolder.

Whenever you change to a new subdomain, or you change domains, you'll need to tell Google that you're doing it. Here's what we recommend:
1. Set up 301 Permanent Redirects from the old URLs to the new URLs. This will forward/redirect users to the new location, including the search engine crawlers.
2. Verify the new location (the new subdomain) in Google Search Console and use the Change of Address Tool to tell Google that you've moved.
3. Update Google Analytics so that it reflects the new URL.
By verifying the site you'll see the traffic in the Google Search Console and Google will recognize that change faster if you use the Change of Address tool.

Hi,
I think what might be causing the traffic drop is the fact that you have moved your library to a submain as oppose to keeping it under the root domain.

Organic and direct traffic swap
We moved to a CMS (Webhook) and when we did that organic traffic and direct traffic swapped places. Since we moved it organic traffic is down by about 400 visits and direct traffic is up by 400 visits. I went through the list below and confirmed everything is working. The http refer wasn't being passed for a couple of weeks but the issue was resolved and the organic traffic issue is still ongoing. Is there anything else that may cause this issue? I confirmed the issue isn't one of the below problems. during http to https redirect (or vice versa) the referrer may not be passed incorrect subdomain or cross-domain tracking can strip the referrer. 302 redirects sometimes caused the referrer to be dropped problems with cookies being lost/corrupted. javascript missing from certain entry pages (means any further page view looks like a direct)

How does switching to HTTPS effect Google Analytics?
We are looking at making our site HTTPS. We have been using the same Google Analytics account for years and I like having the historical data. All of our pages will be the same, we are just going to redirect from the http to https. Does anything need to be done with Google Analytics? What about other addons such as Optimizely, Crazy Egg, or Share this?

Google traffic plummeted on Sunday - what can I do?
On Sunday, my google traffic plummeted. I was getting 320 hits a day from Google on my best days - my site is just about to turn 3 months old so I was thrilled with that. On Sunday it was 110 and I think it is getting worse. Edit: Yep, yesterday was 65. Google Webmasters shows the drop today. One day, my impressions were 5,500 and the next just 1,000. Yikes. My traffic is so depressing now after so much hard work. Is this Google Panda? What can I do? I have no idea why this happened. I am getting several quality backlinks a week, sometimes a day.

GA stopped tracking traffic, suddenly, why¿? :-/
2 days ago GA stopped receiving data. It only stopped for one account of all my projects. At this moment there are 5 persons navigating the site and these days there where numerous visitors as they contacted the support team thru the site. GA says that it's receiving the code, hw, I checked it twice. The tracking code is located below the footer, in the body. It was there for few years.... I also checked if there is some js conflict, negative. Is there something that could make the tracking to stop? Does anybody experienced similar problems¿? Should I be worried...¿? (and with SEOmoz server with issues not sure when will see new results.......) EDIT: In Web Master Tools I see results for indexing, with yesterday date, so I assume that the site crawling is ok and must be GA issue.

Can you get local search numbers/traffic out of Google Analytics?
With Google's new local search I am more curious as to market penetration on keywords that are now localized to my different US cities. I understand that you can separate out Google traffic based on regional Google domains, but I am curious if there is an effective way to separate out searches and keywords based on a my local US Metros? If google cannot do this, any recommendations on products that can? Thanks.
