Drop in Android organic search
-
Hay Moz Community,
I have been analysing traffic fluctuations for a few websites and have found a noticeable drop in organic traffic from android devices. I initially thought it could be a generic mobile drop but iOS is holding its own?
Can anyone share any insights they may have come across to explain the drop on android specifically.
Thank you in advance

Great shout Bridget. They do indeed and that all points to the the answer. Come see me at the #searchlove party this year as I owe you a drink!!

It sounds like it may be a misattribution issue rather than an actual traffic loss. This article seems like it could provide a (partial) answer. Do the dates you saw the drop align with the dates mentioned in the article?

We have only really started to look into the cause in the past few weeks.
Same experience on Android and iOS from the site so no variations there. I would certainly look at a tracking or reporting issue if iOS was also showing a massive change but alas its not. Also other channels are reporting ok.
My hunch is something to do with the way android users get serp results or the way they are displayed for organic but I can't find any differences, It could also be down to user behaviour or intent but again can't pin point it.

When did you notice that this started? Are there any dates that coincide with anything? Is it so significant that you can't just put it down to the number of users on the different devices?
Have there been any changes to the site that might have affected the tracking code at all? Could it be an issue with reporting in Analytics?

there is a slight drop from iOS <5% but the android is a lot more which is what we can't put our finger on. I can't see any differences in way you search or results from iOS and Android which is strange.

Hey Alex,
On Android alone seems like a bit of an odd one. I initially thought about the fact that Google has recently announced that they had finished the rollout of the mobile algorithm and upped the signals, but I can't think how this would impact only Android devices.
Is this something that is across the board for each of your clients?

Ways to Identify Popular Search Terms
Certain searches seem intuitively like they would be popular, but don't appear so in my keyword research on Moz Pro. For example, I am a therapist and would have guessed that a lot of people would be searching for "online therapy California" during this pandemic, but actually those terms are not popular. I looked at Google Trends to see if I could understand this better, but It wasn't very helpful. Any other suggestions for where to get more information when search terms you would expect to be high volume don't appear to be so?

Diganosing Traffic Drop
With Spring Break and seasonality in play right now I'm curious about techniques for separating/diagnosing temporary drops in interest due to user behavior in a category from other things like drop in ranking or similar. How quickly can you tell these apart? Analytics will be delayed a few days for instance, other tools take time to update. What should we be looking for and when to say "ok, this too shall pass" as opposed to "did we make a bad site update" or something similar. Any tips?

Which Search Engine Do Women Primarily Prefer?
I found a study in 2005 titled "Men Are From Google, Women Are From Yahoo" showing that women at that time preferred Yahoo as their primary search engine. I'm unable to track down updated statistical data to determine which search engine women primarily prefer. Any links to studies or resources would be greatly appreciated!

Google Instant Search? REALLY?! Why is this the result???
First, this is one I thought I would never ask, but: Could this be true? I had noticed my MacBook Pro was eating some power and wanted to see if I could optimize my settings so to take advantage what battery life was available. (I swear that is the truth). So, I am at a Starbucks on someone and typed into Google search bar the following query - Best way to conserve - and, received the following instant search results before I could type - power on a macbook pro I am not putting it here as I want you to ask yourself what came up. I have attached a screenshot. My colleague arrived and without prompting she retried and got the same. So I am curious: Do you get the same result and why do you think that result is so predominant? This is funny. efuts.png

How do you know if you have been penalized by search engines?
How do you know if you have been penalized by search engines? I logged into my Google and Bing webmaster accounts and all looks ok, but in the last 30 days, my organic traffic has decreased 33%. My traffic usually steadily increases and if there is ever a decrease, it's usually very small.

Website coming up in omitted results for search term?
Hi, My website is coming up in omitted results for search term. Now I have heard before if this is the case then its mainly due to a duplicate content penalty. But the content I used is unique and produced by a copywriter so its good. Its a new site and was in the results for about 2 weeks, I changed the non www to www in webmaster tools 1 day ago and now its sitting in omitted results. In webmaster tools I had to add the domain twice one non www and one www. Both accounts I hooked up a sitemap. Is it just because the site is new and its just working out where to rank me? Just so you know the non www was indexed for the 2 weeks changed it in webmaster tools so I wanted the www one indexed and now gone into omitted results. Cheers
