Less relevant/not optimized competitor sites ranking higher in SERPs?
-
Has anyone else noticed their rank positions falling to competitor sites that aren't optimized and are less relevant? I've noticed that we've lost some rankings or have dropped over the past few weeks and the competitor pages that have replaced us haven't been optimized, aren't as relevant, and it doesn't look like there has been any updates (looking through archived versions). For example, their main "shoes" gallery is ranking for more specific shoe types, like "sandals", and "sandals" isn't even mentioned in their metadata and they have no on-page copy. Their DA is slightly higher, but our sites have a denser link profile (although, yes, I do need to go through and see what kind of links, exactly, we've gained).
Has anyone else seen this happen recently, or have any ideas of why or what we could do to get our rank positions back? My main initiatives have been to create and implement fresh on-page copy, metadata, and manage 404s/301 redirects, but I'm thinking this issue is beyond a quick copywriting tweak.

Hey Matt! Hmm, I don't think I've used Keyword Explorer for that purpose, yet. I still need to go back and really dive into the tool. I'll check it out! Thanks!

Good point on the disavowed/backlinks! I think it's so easy to get sucked into the nitty gritty details and lose sight of those bigger picture initiatives that will have a bigger impact in the long run. At least, I know that's something I struggle with.

Hi WWWSEO! Have you done any competitive research in Keyword Explorer? The SERP analysis section might give you a sense of what's going on.

There are lots of misteries around the reasons for a specific SERP.
I'd advise you to work in a different way so as to get even better than them.
Also remember the data we have access is always a part of the data that actualy google crawls. You'd never tell if them have disavowed links of if there are a big backlinks recently created.Wish you best of luck!

Right. Like I said, I'm sure it's not just a simple tweak to metadata or copy, and I've looked at their link profile compared to ours, authority, etc. I've noticed that their internal linking is kind of insane (10+ links within a short paragraph plus additional "popular links" at the bottom), but none of this is new for them, even of this year. It doesn't look like they have made any updates recently that would have boosted their performance all of a sudden, which is why I'm dumbfounded as to what happened.

Well, without specific information its imposible to determine why other pages outrank yours.
I suspect that you already know, instead I'll remind them, these are the ranking factors that moz have stated. There are many posibilities that those pages, instead of being badly optimized, have more "juice" in other ranking factor, such as some better backlinks, better internal linkbuinlding, better CTR, pagespeed or many others.
Don't cruch yourself only in on-page optimization, its a big reason to get better rankings, but not the only one.

Ah, my bad, I didn't specify that I'm actually referring to competitor landing pages rather than our own. It's strange because the landing pages we had ranking were optimized for specific terms, have on-page copy, etc., but over the last couple weeks, a few competitors overtook our sites and their pages aren't optimized at all and I've looked through archived versions and there haven't been any changes.

Huge difference between GSC ranking and browser ranking for certain keywords: How to proceed?
Hi, There is a huge ranking difference between the GSC and browser for our primary keyword. As per GSC, our ranking is around 15 and when checking on the multiple different incognito browsers it's around 50. How to handle this? Which is the accurate one? Product expert from Google forums claim that what I see on browsers are the personalized results; but I tried on different browsers with different connections. Thanks

Does an EAT score on my YMYL site impact my rankings?
I've read some conflicting information on YMYL and EAT. If the Google Quality Raters are out there reviewing YMYL pages and scoring them on EAT, does that site's score have an impact on that page's/site's ranking?

Internal pages ranking over the homepage: How to optimise to rank better at Google?
Hi, We have experienced a shift in SERP from internal pages ranking over website homepage for more than a year. Previously website homepages used to rank for the primary keyword like moz.com for "SEO". Now we can see that internal pages like moz.com/learn/seo/what-is-seo been ranking for the primary keyword "SEO". Google is picking up these "what is ABC" pages than the homepage. All our competitor sites are ranking with these internal pages which are about "what is (primary keyword)". We do have the same internal pages "what is....", but this pages is not ranking; only our homepage is ranking. Moreover we dropped more than 15 positions after this shift in SERP. How to diagnose this? Thanks

Google SERPs changes
Hi I wonder if anyone knew of any changes to the Google SERPs appearance in August 2015? We dropped in over a thousand visits to the homepage on brand so I wanted to find out why. Also, our DA went from 36 to 34 - does Google panda affect domain authority at all? Thank you

Can Ecommerce help with Keyword Rankings?
I am curious to know if an ecommerce website plays a role in higher rankings. we have been struggling for some time on a term and all of our competitors have an online shopping cart. we have a custom magento website with a request a quote form as our products are very costly. (range from $500 - $250,000). Is there something we can add to the code to help boost our rankings?

Intermittent ranking drops.. up and down and once again..
So.. For the last several weeks (I noticed March 11th), we are having some weird ranking drops. Our keywords will drop overnight from their usual position between 2-6 to further than 200 and then be back to normal a couple days later. We use Sheerseo to track daily ranking. I track about 15 KW everyday and noticed it happening then. Is this part of the recent changes? I am just really puzzled that we are seeing drops and then going back to normal and then drops again. It is hard to know where you stand with such drastic differences day to day. Any ideas?

Recovered from penguin/panda but which one?
So the good news is that for the first time since April 24th, one of our websites is back in the search results as of around December 12 but I am still unsure as whether it was panda or penguin (or both) that was impacting the site?? Note this was not a manual penalty. I diagnosed it as a penguin issue (drop on April 24th, aggressive on-page optimisation, around 10% of links from spammy directories like addyourfreelinks.com with anchor text built by a questionable agency), but on further advice it was thought that panda was also an issue because it is a hotel microsite so there was duplication with our own brand site and across third party travel sites and there were a number of pages with bare content. I figured it was a good time to clean everything up to address both. Here is a summary of actions taken: submitted disavow file on October 24th with all questionable links including actions taken and comments. Since then I have cleaned up some content so it is less aggressively targeting certain keywords. Amended several third party listings with duplicate content No follow, indexed pages that were directly duplicated with our brand site and over the last month have built a few good quality links. Cleaned up 404's in webmaster tools over the last week I have searched to see if there were any algorithm updates around December 12 but cannot find any mentions. Thoughts?

Google Algo Update In Que. What consititues over optimization?
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2401732,00.asp According to this, Google is bringing the hammer down soon on another 10-20% of the search results. While we don't advocate keyword stuffing, exchanging links, or anything too risky I am still concerned. Do we know if the example "perfectly optimized page"; http://www.seomoz.org/blog/perfecting-keyword-targeting-on-page-optimization is now going to be penalty bait? Is this over stuffing? Also, how might this effect ecommerce sites in particular?
