What's the difference between 'en-gb' and 'en-uk; when choosing Search engines in campaign set up?
-
Hi
What's the difference search engine wise and which one should I choose, i presume GB since covers entire British landmass whereas UK excludes Ireland according to political definition, is it the same according to Google (& other engines) ?

Looks like this has been a bug since 2011? (When looking at the thread https://mza.seotoolninja.com/community/q/uk-and-gb-when-selecting-targeted-engines-in-campaign-management.)
Jon from Moz said in a comment from 2014 that they would be digging into the problem and updating... but no updates as of today 4/30/2018.
-
Using en-UK is a mistake, should be using en-GB
-
Moz should be using the ISO standard, which is en-GB http://www.andiamo.co.uk/resources/iso-language-codes
Seems they are confusing matters as well as people.
-
Thanks for this guys. I was also confused.
Lynn - When you say GB is the mistake and will be phased out the only confusion here is that with Yahoo and Bing they only offer a GB option and no UK option. So will all GB options be phased out? or just for Google and Google Mobile?
Thanks
-
No worries Dirk

Thats great thanks Lynn, i just had a response from Moz too saying they will phase out GB so use UK ideally
Thanks everyone

Hey Dan,
Its a bit confusing and has been for a while! See: https://mza.seotoolninja.com/community/q/uk-and-gb-when-selecting-targeted-engines-in-campaign-management. Results should be the same between them anyway but Moz is saying that GB is the mistake and is due to be phased out.
-
Hi Dirk,
Thanks so much for confirming that !
So is it simply an error that Moz Analytics campaign set up keeps it as an option ?

Incorrect homepage country variant appearing in search resutls
Hi, Background I have an international site with 32 country homepages within the same domain: eg www.domain.com/en-gb/
International SEO | | coma99
www.domain.com/fr-fr/
www.domain.com/de-de/
www.domain.com/es-es/ and so forth We use IP redirection on the root www.domain.com (which has no HTML page of its own) to divert the user to their relevant country homepage. Within each country homepage we include: (a canonical link to itself) ... (hreflang alternates to all instances of other homepages including itself ) Our Google Crawl bot is located in Germany and so when it crawls our root www.domain.com it takes the title and description from its destination url which in crawlbots case is www.domain.com/de-de/ because of the IP redirect. What is the problem I am trying to solve? Every variation of local Google results (eg UK/FR/IT/US) displays at the top the crawled root www.domain.com page with German title/description. How can I stop this happening? Surely adding appropriate hrefs and canonicals to every homepage instance is sufficient for Google to display to you your relevant country homepage variant instead!? GSC is not showing URLs in Regional Language Characters in Search Analytics
Hi, We have a regional language sub-domain, which has the URI in the regional language characters (Hindi). While looking at the Search Analytics data in GSC, we get all the URLs in ASCII format. To resolve this issue, we even encoded the characters in UTF-8, by adding the following in the of the page: However, we are still getting illegible URLs in search console. It would be really great if someone could help me out with this issue. Thanks!

How to get EU visitors to .co.uk and US visitors to .com
Hi all Re: www.explanar.com and www.explanar.co.uk We have developed a website for the US and UK, with a shop on each. Each site has a network of countries they can export to. US sells and ships to US, South America, Caribbean and so on UK sells and ships to UK, Europe, and Africa, etc Currently, visitors from Germany (.de) searching for phrases "Explanar", or "golf swing trainer" get the .com (US) site. They cannot buy from this site, so we have added a message to tell them to go to the UK site (.co.uk, but what I really want is for the European visitors to find the UK site only. .com is the original URL, but with new content

.co.uk has just been set up In the long run, we will set up .de URLs with German language, and other countries will follow, but not all. Any thoughts would be great. Thanks

Content in different languages
HI all, I need some advice about displaying content in different languages. Currently I 301 to the correct locale based on IP. e.g. German 301s from site.com to site.com/de En 301s from site.com to site.com/en Is this the best way or would it just be better to change the content based on browser and keep the URL the same? I have href="/hr" hreflang="hr" rel="alternate" /> tags implemented for all locales on site Thanks

SEO for different English spiking countries
Hi, I'm trying to target my SEO to several English spiking countries (Canada, UK, Australia, South Africa and so..) and I came across a big dilemma: should I tray to build a local version of my website for each country, or perhaps I should stay with my one .COM website and re-direct all the English-local-countries with 301 (if anyone will tray to go into the local domain)? The thing is that obviously the best practice to get high ranking is to be local, but what should I put in those sites and who can I avoid duplicate content and user confusion? On the other hand, do you think I can really get high ranking with one website for all those countries, and how? Thanks, Itay Drory.

Multi-lingual SEO: Country-specific TLD's, or migration to a huge .com site?
Dear SEOmoz team, I’m an in-house SEO looking after a number of sites in a competitive vertical. Right now we have our core example.com site translated into over thirty different languages, with each one sitting on its own country-specific TLD (so example.de, example.jp, example.es, example.co.kr etc…). Though we’re using a template system so that changes to the .com domain propagate across all languages, over the years things have become more complex in quite a few areas. For example, the level of analytics script hacks and filters we have created in order to channel users through to each language profile is now bordering on the epic. For a number of reasons we’ve recently been discussing the cost/benefit of migrating all of these languages into the single example.com domain. On first look this would appear to simplify things greatly; however I’m nervous about what effect this would have on our organic SE traffic. All these separate sites have cumulatively received years of on/off-site work, and even if we went through the process of setting up page-for-page redirects to their new home on example.com, I would hate to lose all this hard-work (and business) if we saw our rankings tank as a result of the move. So I guess the question is, for an international business such as ours, which is the optimal site structure in the eyes of the search engines; Local sites on local TLD’s, or one mammoth site with language identifiers in the URL path (or subdomains)? Is Google still so reliant on TLD for geo targeting search results, or is it less of a factor in today’s search engine environment? Cheers!
