Keyword in URL - SEO impact
-
Hi,
We don't have most important keyword of our industry in our domain or sub-domain. How important it is to have keyword in website URL? Most of our competitors pages with "keyword" urls been listing in SERP. What is back-links role in this scenarion? And which URL have more advantage? keyword in sub-domain or page with keyword. Like for "seo" keyword..... seo.example.com or example.com/seo

Hi JK,
Thanks for the reply.
First of all, this is an old article, and many (if not all) of the information given has changed in Google search algorithms.
In the case you are describing, in nowadays SEO (2019), I'd suggest you not to focus on having any keyword weight in the domain/subdomain.
Keep both services in the same domain, under the same company name. Google will understand that its the same company offering two services. Of course, you should have different pages for both services.
Probably would be of help, creating really good content to give context and use internal linking to tell Google which are your main pages and targeted search terms.Hope it helps.
Best luck.

GR,
Appreciate the advice. We are working with a customer that offers two very different services (janitorial services and pest control). We have 2 options for organizing their site.
Option A: 1 website under the main company name with dual focus
Option B: 2 seperate site 1 for each service giving main service the company domain name and the secondary service the company domain name - janitorial.com
Would enjoy to hear your thoughts on this!
Thanks,
JK

Yeap, it should be redirected to relevant pages. Not to the homepage nor less relevant pages, because it's treated as a soft 404 error.
Here a great article:
Proof That 301 Redirects To Less-Relevant Pages Are Seen As Soft 404s To Google [Case Study] Google May Treat Expired Products Page Redirects As Soft 404s And, what google considers as Soft 404 errorsHope it helps.

Thanks GR.
I have gone through the Moz article on 301 redirects. They say that every redirect comes with certain amount of SEO risk. What exactly it might be?
And everybody say that we must redirect to relevant page. I can understand that 2 pages content must be relevant, but what's the importance of URL here? Do we need a match in URL keywords too? Because, if a non-existing link is redirected to existing page, what will be the metrics to pass link juice or any risk as there will be no content in one of these pages and how bots check? Like for below example:
website.com/folder/page1/content/ is a non-existing page and if it's redirected to website.com or website.com/folder2/page14.
Thanks,
Satish

You're welcome, we are here to help.
Theoretically, there is no linkjuice loss with redirects.
Take a look in this article about the last news and update on Google about 3xx redirects.:

Thanks for the suggestions GR. That gives us an idea to proceed on.
We are also planning to move all the links from one subdirectory to another subdirectory. But we will be redirecting them to related pages.
For example, website.com/folder1/seo-changes to website.com/folder2/seo-changes
Only sub directory gonna change. But we have many links pointing to sub directory we are directing. Do the same link juice passes to these links redirected to another sub directory?

Hi there.
I've conducted some experiments on having the keyword in several places: Exact match domain, subdomain, subdirectory and in the slug.
My conclusions are:- Having it in a subdomain doen't help at all.
- Having it in a exact match domain (e.g. keyword.com) helps very little and creates a problem when the business tries to expand to more search terms.
- Having it in a subdirectory (e.g. domain.com/my-keyword/some-page) doesnt help much, unless you're trying to rank the page that comes at the subdirectory. This latter makes it a single page or just a slug
- Having it in the slug (e.g. domain.com/single-page-keyword) helps, makes the difference.
My opinion, when it comes to on-page optimization and keyword optimization, it's mandatory to place the main (or some variation of it) in the final URL.
In all my expriments, always there was a correct optimization (on page and for that kw). And were focused for similar kw with similar search difficulties.---- UPDATE ---

Discussion: Ecommerce SEO - What would you recommend as high Impact tasks to start campaigns with?
Calling all those with ecommerce SEO chops! What are the high impact tasks that you would always start out your new campaigns with? I've got this far in my thinking: Identifying query classes, identifying the intent of each query class and setting up ranking indices ensuring templated META page titles match the most valuable query syntax identify any issues with crawl budget that might prevent deep product page indexing

If I want to update the title of a page on my website would that negatively impact SEO?
I want to update a few page titles on my website. Some are duplicate titles, and some titles are just too long. Will my website be negatively impacted at all if I update these? I read somewhere that once you have created a page you need to stick to the title you have given it. So I am not sure if I should leave these pages be and make note of utilizing better SEO practices for the future or if I can go back and edit them. Any insight is much appreciated!

Negative SEO impact of two Similar Domains on Same IP
Our ecommerce company has acquired a former competitor which has similar content & largely sells the same set of products. Both domains run on the same ecommerce platform version and do well organically on an overlapping set of keywords. Currently the websites are separate instances which are hosted separately. There is no interlinking or cross branding between the sites. Since each brand has strong equity & SEO, there are no plans to combine brands or domains. For several reasons, it would be ideal to combine platform instances and hosting, but we are concerned about potential SEO impact of shared IP addresses. Is it likely that moving the sites to the same IP/C-Block could have a negative SEO impact since they rank on the same keywords. Would Google devalue one site if they were seen to be connected or owned by the same company? I know this issue has been addressed for domains with more variance between products and content, but since there is a large overlap (but not duplicate content) between our two domains, we wanted additional insight. Obviously there are other SEO factors when you move a site, but we are currently trying to understand this specific factor. Thanks Community for your help! -Amber

How to switch from URL based navigation to Ajax, 1000's of URLs gone
Hi everyone, We have thousands of urls generated by numerous products filters on our ecommerce site, eg./category1/category11/brand/color-red/size-xl+xxl/price-cheap/in-stock/. We are thinking of moving these filters to ajax in order to offer a better user experience and get rid of these useless urls. In your opinion, what is the best way to deal with this huge move ? leave the existing URLs respond as before : as they will disappear from our sitemap (they won't be linked anymore), I imagine robots will someday consider them as obsolete ? redirect permanent (301) to the closest existing url mark them as gone (4xx) I'd vote for option 2. Bots will suddenly see thousands of 301, but this is reflecting what is really happening, right ? Do you think this could result in some penalty ? Thank you very much for your help. Jeremy

Replace dynamic paramenter URLs with static Landing Page URL - faceted navigation
Hi there, got a quick question regarding faceted navigation. If a specific filter (facet) seems to be quite popular for visitors. Does it make sense to replace a dynamic URL e.x http://www.domain.com/pants.html?a_type=239 by a static, more SEO friendly URL e.x http://www.domain.com/pants/levis-pants.html by creating a proper landing page for it. I know, that it is nearly impossible to replace all variations of this parameter URLs by static ones but does it generally make sense to do this for the most popular facets choose by visitors. Or does this cause any issues? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks a lot in advance

International SEO
We want to expand to a few new regions internationally. My question is if we register sites in different geographies and upload our exact site to these web addresses (exact duplicates) so our web addresses will then be www.mysite.co.uk (current site) www.mysite.com (new intended site) www.mysite.com.au (new intended site) and add rel=“canonical” linking elements to prevent duplicate content issues. Will our content production on our current site www.mysite.co.uk retain its value within all the other sites. Is this the best way to do it? Thanks in advance!
