Linking .com and .co.uk

My client has an online ecommerce store which he is due to launch later this week.
He owns both the .co.uk and the .com - the site is hosted on .co.uk and the .com domain redirects to the .co.uk
The client wants anyone who visits the site from the .com to see permalinks when later going through the site as .com as opposed to .co.uk permalinks.
Is this possible/any suggestions?

I think I'm a little confused by the situation/question. If he wants users who land on the .com domain to stay on the .com domain, this is the default behaviour of a website so he could simply remove the 301 redirect.
Doing this would double the maintenance and SEO work required so it's rarely a good idea unless he has a lot of resources to throw at it. Also, having 2 websites that are absolutely identical is dangerous; you won't get 'penalised' for it but the rankings would likely be pretty bad.
If he were to go down the route of running 2 sites, the best way to handle this is to write content that appeals to the users in each of those locations. The most obvious difference being UK English vs US but the way content is written for each country will typically contain regional differences too.

Opensite explorer results and old links
Hello, Within a week after the penguin update (Apr. 24), I removed all site wide footer links pointing to my site. However, if I run a opensite explorer on this site I still see these links pointing to my site. And I'm sure I deleted them! How long will it take that these links disappear from the opensite explorer results? Do you think Google's algorithm has the same results to check my website on? Or does the algorithm have another "tool"? Thank you. Regards, Thomas

Moving British site to the US... who will have .com? US or UK?
We are the UK's first baby social commerce site launched in Nov 2011. We're doing quite well and are looking at expanding to the US. However I'm not sure what advice you'd give me in terms of internationalising the site. I see three options on how to deal with the URL structure? Make US site as .com as it will be my main source of revenue for the long run and redirect all British traffic to .co.uk Have .com for both UK and US but have the URL as either: us.babyhuddle.com or as babyhuddle.com/us/. Do ".edu." links with appended ccTLD have similar value to .edu links with no ccTLD?
Just wondering if there is any evidence or data to suggest that, all things being equal, a link from a college or university with a ccTLD has more value than another ccTLD link. I have some anecdotal evidence that several URLs with the *.edu.ph ccTLD have domain authorities over 55. My expectation is that because only a TLD is ever truly a TLD: ucla_.edu_ is a true .edu link, but for a URL such as "feu.edu.ph" the Top-level domain is the ccTLD, i.e. .ph for the Philippines, and the .edu portion of the root domain will be irrelevant to the link's value. But I'm hoping I'm wrong... 🙂

Link Building in russian speaking countries
Hello, We are an international company, based mostly in Romania and Hungary, but we also launched some websites in Ukraine. The interesting thing in Ukraine that we are facing heavily, is how they are doing link building. Basically the only link building that they do is buying links through a platform: sape.ru (http://www.mainlinkads.com/ this is English version). Local SEO consultants also advice to buy links. It wasn't so much a problem, but when you have a good site with good content, but have competitors that are buying links and then overcome our good keyword positions, we started to questions whether to start buying links ourselves. What is your opinion on this? Is it possible that Google will penalize a big bunch of sites, now in sape.ru there are: 487 069 sites? Can we adopt the same strategy as our competitors as long as it is working? Thanks, Irina

Ranking well in Google US but not showing up in UK
Hi, We are trying to position a specific site for a big sport event that will be played at the end of May. We only care about Google UK. It had no relevant content until last week. The site is a almost a year old but we just started to get links for it (all from the UK). They worked so fast: we were in page 2 of SERPs in the UK within a few days. But suddenly the site has disappeared and we're not even in top 100 anymore. However, we are ranking extremely well in the US (first page for the keywords we wanted to rank for). The site is a .com and it's hosted in Wordpress.com (with a custom URL). I understand that that can be a problem, but we have already told Google that our business is in the UK through Webmaster Tools. I guess that with time and more UK links, Google would ultimately understand that our focus is the UK audience, but unfortunately we have no time and we can't wait due to the date of the sport event. What do you think that we can do to rank well in the UK and not in the US as fast as possible? Thanks!
