Pinterest Link Value

Hello,
First of all I know that all the links which come from Pinterest are no follow.
However about 4 years ago we made a campaign to pinterest for one of the websites we are managing. Although the thing was going well we had to stop it for various reasons.
Right now, 4 years later, this thing has grown big without any move for us! All these years our pins, which were great in many aspects, were continuously reppined. This has lead to the point where the Google Search Console is reporting that about 500.000 links are linking to our website from Pinterest.
We know how this has helped us or not concerning the actual refferring traffic from Pinterest but our main question, and this where we want the Moz's community help, is how is this helping from a SEO aspect.

You're right. We checked the thing in detail and in fact there are a lot of collateral follow links created from certain viral pins.
No mystery after all!

I'd say that it's due to collateral links and, as Ria is saying below, Pinterest might still have dofollow links from the past. Another thing to consider is on-page engagement. Basically, if there are a lot of links and people loving the content, they would be clicking to the website, and, if the content on the website is equally good or better, engagement metrics (time on page, bounce rate etc), will be good as well. And we do know that engagement is one of the ranking factors.

I will agree with you but the case with this website is raising to us a couple of more serious questions which I did not mention. This website was severely hit by penguin 1. It lost many positions, many #1 positions and throw it to ranking to page #2 or #3. However due to the mid to low importance for the certain website by the owner no actions were taken toward regaining the positions or refreshing the link profile.
So the only difference between the 2012 link profile which led to the penguin punishment and the 2017 link profile which led to recovery, not a full one though, is those 500K+ pinterest links. To be honest we haven't made any thorough research on the case of collateral link gaining caused by pinterest but in general terms no further links were added.
This is what is making us having second thoughts about the actual value of the social media links.

Oh, come on.
Does Google use the # of shares or something - of course not. But there is definite correlation between rankings and popularity. Surely not causation, but correlation. The idea is that the more popular content is the more likes, shares etc it will have, which, in turn, will cause getting more links. More links = better rankings.

Pinterest links weren't always nofollow, and the links that were created at that time remain to be followed even now. Doesn't really answer your question, but thought it would be worth sharing since description links only went nofollow about 4 years ago.
Unfortunately, editing the followed links results in the link no longer being followed. Tried that. If the image gets repinned, the repin won't be followed either.

Google does not use social signals as a ranking signal. It would be far too easy to manipulate rankings, and there's no guarantee of quality.
However, studies have shown a correlation between content that is shared many times and links garnered. You've likely gained quality backlinks thanks to all the repinning on Pinterest, and that has impacted your SEO efforts in a positive manner. And of course, quality referral traffic is always appreciated

So, links from social media are not that effective, because search engines know it's social media, anybody can post anything in any amounts. Therefore Google doesn't pay pretty much any attention to such links.
However, social signals do have a lot of value. We have seen a lot of positive changes after good social media campaigns. It's not a secret that Google looks at social media popularity in their rankings. So, yeah, that's how social affects SEO

Thanks for all you guys do I am writing because I am trying to build a company's SEO link profile with links that have super high, and super stable Domain and Page Authorities (as well as solid Trust and Citation flows). I do this organically and even build my own sites using moz strategies - BUT, I am in need of your best advice: What are some links you can "buy" (as a result of using services from) that are strong and dofollow? Is Constant Contact good? Is Best of the Web good? tweetangels smart? I have seen several businesses with constant contact links (very high domain authority) on their profiles and as the head of business development for a mid-sized marketing firm, I want to see if constant contact, botweb, etc. are smart sources to put my clients on for the sake of the seo profile links - I am looking for strong, long-term perma-bumps for my companies and don't want to miss out on low-hanging fruit (that won't poison me in the end). Can you speak to that please? Do you guys have a list of directory links or 'whatever' links that are "get-able" by a regular guy like me that are not simply 2.0 nofollow? Thank you Ben

Q: Does a link in a facebook post count as a backlink? Q: is it a 'do follow' or 'no follow' link? Q: twitter uses short links, so when someone links to me, do i get the points/juice from the backlink?

Implementing Pinterest On Site and Social Snippets
Hi can someone confirm, does Pinterest use Open Graph Protocol? If you use the Pinterest Widget builder - http://business.pinterest.com/widget-builder/#do_pin_it_button Will the image you place in the widget replace the image Pinterest selects if it does use the Open Graph Protocol? The site already uses Open Graph Protocol for Facebook and Google+. It also uses Twitter cards for twitter. It would be good if we don't need to add more html (such as from the Pinterest widget builder) for Pinterest. -- Matt

When I'm Social Book marking my websites I use a url shortening service such as bitly.com or onlywire.com. Do these services transfer link juice in the same ways as a direct link would do?

Twitter and Facebook Back-link Aquisition procedure?
This is another novice question that I hope is easy to answer for someone out there. How do you get a backlink from twitter or facebook? Either Open Site Explorer is not recognizing my accounts or twitter and facebook are not reporting it for some reason. Need people's opinion on if this is good advice for link building
What google wants is authority, relevancy, quality and engagement. If you have an authority in your niche and place relevant content on your website plus grammar free, unique and a lot of words, and social influence via Twitter, Facebook, Google +... You shouldn't be worried about the speed of building back links. I checked your website and it seems like an authority site. PR5, 18K backlinks plus $38K SE free traffic (according to SEMrush)... You just need a social influence to boost your authority. Create Twitter, Facebook, Google+ accounts for this website and also Facebook and Google+ pages. Then Create 30 web 2.0 accounts and on each one post three articles. Two of them are an account activation (this is what I call it), which can be just grabbed from ezinearticles and spun. Keep the links to the articles at the bottom of the pages. Once your web 2.0 sites are indexed by Google publish 800+ words quality relevant content with two links to your website. One to your root domain and one to the most relevant page your website (I mean relevant to the 800+ words article). Do this on each of those 30 web 2.0 sites. After this blast all of the 800+ articles with all kind of backlinks. Forum profiles, blog comments, article directories... Just use Senuke and other software. And don't forget to create a facebook fan page for each of the web 2.0 sites. In one month, you'll see a heck of a move in rankings. Where does the bookmarking part go? You need to bookmark every single URL you want Google to see. And if you want to outsource it, I highly recommend you to get a full time VA who would do this for you. Hope it helps. And your answer to your question about speed, if your site is older than 3 months don't care about the speed. Care about the quality.

Do links in Paper.li twitter round-ups help my SEO?
My twitter feed is picked up in the daily roundups like Paper.li. Do these links count towards my SEO effort or are they just empty. Clearly they spread my content so that great, just wondered if the links pass juice to the site.
