Sudden big drop in ranking - update, tech issue or penalty?
-
We are managing a website that was previously consistently ranking on P1 or top position on P2 and over the weekend (28th Jan) suddenly dropped to P5.
What is the best way of ascertaining whether this was down to an update, a tech issue or a penalty? There are other pages on the site (sub-folders) which are still continuing to rank well on the site for similar kws.
Regards,
V -
Thanks Greg & Marie,
The site in question was acquired a few months' ago a fairly old site on a WP engine and had a couple of tech issues at the start but they were fixed and seemingly all was back to normal.
I have since gone on and disavowed some poor backlinks and also fixed some 'Missing Author Missing Updated' issues that were popping up on GSC
No crawl errors and no Manual Actions showing up, hoping it is just a temporary blip.

I've found that there has been a lot of turbulence in the SERPS in the last few weeks. I've had two clients that dropped from page 1 for many terms to beyond page 6 and then a few days later jumped up to rank even higher than they were before.
Have you made any changes to the site in the last couple of weeks? Here are some things I'd be doing to assess a traffic drop:
-Check in GA to see if the drop is across all pages or just certain pages. If it's certain pages, is there a pattern?
-Is the drop across all devices? For example, if the drop is just in mobile, perhaps the site was affected by Google's changes to the mobile interstitial algo.
-Have there been changes to the robots.txt file?
-Is there anything in Google Search Console --> Search Traffic --> Manual Actions?
-Are there any crawl errors in GSC that could alert you to a problem?
-Do your pages fetch and render properly in GSC?
Another thing to consider is the age of the site. If this is a new site, it's not uncommon for the site to get a honeymoon boost and then drop down again.
If none of those apply, then what I'd recommend is to wait it out for a few more days and see what happens. You may find everything pops back up again.

I would give it a bit more time to settle, its very easily to jump the gun. You can also check sites like serpmetrics and algoroo as well as webmaster world etc. for any news but Google is constantly trying different things that result in SERP moving about. I normally leave things for a week before i conclude that may be the final position. I would also potentially check and changes you've done off-site or on site that may have affected the rank, not forgetting search engine console.
Hope this helps.

Unsolved Updating labels via CSV upload
Hi, I'd like to update all my keyword labels in one go and I thought it would be easier to do this via a csv upload) however, when I try to upload the keyword file with all my existing keywords and the labels, it says I can't due to me reaching my keyword limit.

Am I trying to upload the labels with the wrong tool, or is there another way around this, please?0 -
Magento webshop ranks bad on Category pages
Hi All! Our webshop is www.hond.nl. We operate it for about a year now and it is not ranking on our most important pages. Basically we have 3 types of pages: Category pages, Product pages and 'Splash' pages. The 2nd and the 3rd rank OK. But the 1st, the category pages not at all. While the category pages have the best (hand written, unique) and the most content. For example https://www.hond.nl/hondenvoer.html is not ranking on keyword 'hondenvoer' (position 140...) We have investigated quite thoroughly and did most common (moz) tests and can't find a reason why the category pages don't rank. (could it have something to do with the filters...?) If anybody can shed some light on it, we would be much obliged! Thanks, Sander

Rankings go up and down, up and down, up and down
Almost every week we have more than a two dozen keywords that will all suddenly increase in rank only to then decrease in rank right back to where they were the previous week. This happens constantly despite the fact that we are doing very little SEO-wise on a week-to-week basis. What might be causing these constant shifts?

Are seomoz ranking in jeopardy?
A few weeks ago Raventools announced that they would no longer be able to provide tools based on the adwords API, then withdrew that. Rand commented on a thread here discussing that and made similar noises. Today Raventools made an announcement as SERP tracking with wording that sounded a lot like it had more than a little influence from Google. Would I be really paranoid to be wondering whether the Rankings tools in seomoz could be at risk?

Keyword Difficulty Tool Ranking
I'm using the keyword difficultly tool to help me create a a list of 5 keywords (out of approx 50-60) to optimise pages for on a site. However I don't want to just choose the top 5 if 3 of them are too competitive and not worth targeting. From anyone's experience, for a small, new web company who has no pages optimised at this point, do you think there is a keyword difficulty score that I should create a hard limit on? So for instance, with a group of keywords, to only target keywords that have a difficulty score of 60 or below because anything higher would be too difficult to optimise the pages for in this stage of the sites development. Thanks in advance for your help Michelle 🙂

How seomoz sets the country for google to monitor my rankings?
In some of my campaign settings I use specific country for search engine (e.g. "Google Slovakia"). Some times I check the rankings manually too. My process for this: 1. Open a new Chrome incognito window (be sure that that's the only open incognito window) 2. go to google.sk, type in the keyword 3. at the bottom of the page select advanced search, select language: slovak, resubmit the query That's it. With my process, the monitored keywords are not there were seomoz reports them. So the question: with what settings (domain, language anything else) seomoz is tracking the rankings in country specific search engines?
